Pig Roast Catering L.A. area

Wow-thanks for the tip, when I say the Chinatown vendors are pricey I mean I was getting quotes for like a 12lb for $185.

I did call Outback Catering in Van Nuys and I got a quote for a 30lb plus delivery and prep for $175.. much better deal and since Purple Teeth left a positive review I might consider it. I really wanted someone to come and finish the grilling in our yard but that adds another $400, which is ridiculous.

When I called Osteria in Brentwood - all I got was attitude and a quesstimate for $200 for a 12lb... not so much.

I need a smaller pig for like 20 people max so sounds like the suckling pig would suffice.

I might check out Lien Hoa as you suggested.

Thank You!

Pig Roast Catering L.A. area

Greetings,

I am trying to surprise my better half with a 40th b-day bbq.
I know up North you can find services that come to your house; provide and roast a whole pig for you.
Is there any kind of a vendor that offers the same services here in the L.A. area or is willing to travel to L.A. ??
Any info would be highly appreciated. Thank You!

Dumplings suggestions ?

Trying to take our landlord for a traditional dumpling / pot stickers restaurant for her birthday (dinner).
Obviously its not about the fancy factor but about wonderful deliciousness.
Maybe Luscious Dumpling, J&J ???? Thoughts ???
I know there has been several posts in the past but if anyone could throw out a recommendation for a first time visit in the LA County area.
I vaguely remember an article on a dumpling house that made your dumplings from scratch - fresh to order, can you please jog my memory ??
Any help is highly appreciated. Many Thanks

LOT 1 in Echo Park - another review

After a similar dinner experience this week - I have to say that I find the menu to be a brilliant concept that was poorly executed on my night.
With that said I do understand and hope that it needs some time to work itself out.
The whole disappointment in my account leads from the lack of seasoning on certain dished and over flavoring of i.e.; the sashimi vs. the jalapeno...
However my biggest disappointment was with the rib eye for that price I expected a little more quality, extremely tough to chew and yes the toast was cold as well.
The desserts were disappointing as well- the crumble totally soggy ... with that said I hope to give it another try in the future when the liquor license gets finalized and I do truly hope that this place sorts itself out and also sorts out the atmosphere (the bright lights lead to a temporary squinting issue).

LA with toddler

Hmmm- I have to say that I disagree about Canele. Me and my fellow moms bring our children there at least once a week.
Jane and the staff are extremely accommodating to them – make them special baguette sandwiches etc.
Its also fun for us all to sit at the big communal table which is very spacious.

LA with toddler

I have a very active 2 year old and we definitely have our top 3 that we feel a comfort level to bring her to at all times and where others frequent with their children.
1. Canele in Atwater
2. Gingergrass in Silverlake
3. Cobras & Matadors - Holywood

Tasting set menu L.A. for an unusual anniversary

Ok so me and my s/o have a strange tradition of spending our anniversaries with our closest married couple so we crash each others special nights by the 4 of us going out to eat and this month its our turn to crash and looking for a reasonably priced tasting menu with wine tasting inclusive that wouldnt be over $100 (+/-) per person. I know its possible even though Bistro K is no longer.
The trick is that it will fall on a Saturday so scratching my head a bit......
All suggestions welcomed! Thank you kindly !!!!!!!

Orris Report w/ Pics

Thank you for a well documented report. Orris s one of my fave l.a. restaurants - i honestly enjoy all of their dishes and the desserts are fantastic - I have heard that the exec chef was adominantly studying under W. Pucks pastry master. The apple strudel (not sure if they still make it) was uncanny !!!!!

Pie n Burger- WORST EXPERIENCE EVER

Wow, “WORST EVER and NEVER RETURNING”
No sense of convincing you otherwise to actually try and taste the food.
I have been only once but had an amazing server whom even allowed us to open up the bottle of wine that we got next door at the wine shop.
Theres to say that you can have two completely different experiences at one place and that is why you should try and give second chances.
Less your bad experience was in the actual food department which in this case it was not.

Desperately Seeking Kolaches

hello
I am Czech and you are looking for makovy (poppy seed) kolace and kolace s ovocem (fruit) the closest place in L.A. area (besides my mothers kitchen) is at the Alpine Village in Torrance - the German bakery inside the supermarket often makes these fresh on weekly basis. It has been a few months since I've shopped there but Im sure they still make them. Also totally by a fluke I have seen the poppy seed version at the bakery in Japan Town, I was skeptical of the Japanese version but they tasted very similar.

Good eats around LAX/South Bay???

I had the same dilema few months back, someone recommended Truxtons and it worked out. The ambience is very Westchester but the food I have to say was pretty good.

Also if your looking for a killer BBQ (pick up only) try Bad to Da Bone - truly delicious

Please tell me I didn't make a mistake?

My company had a X-Mas party there few years back and everyone had fun.
Everyone got drunk and enjoyed the view, I remember that the lamb chops I ordered were pretty good. I could think of worse places you could be at!

Fruit Island - Italian Yogurt ? No Thanks!

I guess that I just have to rant a little about the never ending topic of the frozen “Italian” yogurt.
I’m a huge fan of Ce fiore and Pinkberry does not offend my taste buds.
So today during my lunch break I opted to stop by the Fruit Island which claims by its huge storefront signs of being a unique “Italian Yogurt” and mentioned a list of several health benefits from eating it; which made me chuckle a bit since it felt like a new wonder drug promotion.
Never the less I entered the empty shop and realized that it is a self serve chain and continued to fill a small cup of the “original flavor” into my cup – the yogurt substance felt more thick than most. Then I went to add some toppings from the bar and they just looked like washed up frozen fruits only 4 varieties (pineapple, mango, strawberry and kiwi)
I got all but the pineapple and indeed they were frozen and it made me get nostalgic about Ce fiores’ fresh blueberries and raspberries.
The only item that saved the bar was the bitter chocolate chips.
So I proceeded to put my cup on the weight and lord behold my total came to over $5.00 – what, what, what. What?!?
So I paid and asked for my lid since I was taking it back to the office and with a nonchalant response I was told that there were no lids provided.
So as for the actual taste-it resembled the usual suspects and it seemed way too frozen. Not a fan of frozen fruit so that left me with a $5.00 up of bitter choco chips to enjoy.
I chuckled yet again and realized that I should for once just stick to what I know and like and stop trying to participate in the yogurt wars.
The end.
