Great cupcakes for a birthday party
They're fantastic--I think they'll go over well. But they are seriously huge, so be sure to have some cutlery and plates handy (I learned this after serving them at a friend's birthday party last year, where everyone got totally gooed with cake).
williamsburg dinner
DuMont Burger all the way. The DuMac and Cheese is so perfect--nice al dente noodles, classic creamy bechamel and tons of crispy cheese on top. Everytime we're in the nabe, my boyfriend and I get that and one burger to split, and we always leave with delicious leftovers (it's really a ton of food). The burger is excellent, too. Great meat, beautifully seasoned, yummy brioche bun. Just ask for it rarer than you'd actually like--they have a tendency to overcook a bit, which is my only knock on the place. It's on Bedford at S.2nd or S.3rd.
Saul or Dressler for birthday dinner
I second mldanny--Saul is reliably awesome. I've been three times and loved every dish I tried, especially those involving seafood and pork. Nice, unpretentious service, too.
BYOB - Brooklyn
I second starfish's rec of ABistro in Ft. Greene-- one of my new favorites. Went a few weeks ago and had a really great cod dish, and some sleeper-amazing chocolate cake for dessert (the owner, who served us, described it as "just average," meaning halfway between cakey and fudgy...she REALLY undersold it). She told us they're getting their liquor license soon, though, which might put the kibosh on BYOB.
Someone else mentioned Waterfalls on Atlantic, which I would avoid at all costs for anything more than a falafel or fatoosh salad. The entrees are horrible.
