Touristy Spots Worth Visiting

What about trying Sockerbit? - https://www.sockerbit.com/contact.html

Dylan's is pretty gross and Economy candy might not thrill a 15-year-old but Sockerbit is pretty and has great stuff.

Pearl and Ash - Alder - Estela

I suppose we could have ordered more at Alder than the other two, but in any case,
Pub Cheese (really enjoyed), pigs in a blanket (enjoyed), Octopus (good), Rye Pasta (meh), and some other things that aren't on the current menu therefore I have no memory of what they were.

Aside from portion sizes, which could very well be similar at all 3, I still enjoyed Alder the most.

Pearl and Ash - Alder - Estela

I've been to all 3 and the only one I'm dying to try again is Alder. P&A was very good, but I left hungry because I found portions small. Some dishes at Estela were really only OK, others excellent, and I also left hungry (maybe I have a giant appetite??) but Alder was fun, delicious and inventive. Some dishes were misses (the Pastrami pasta was just ok and I'd really been looking forward to trying it) but overall I am excited to go back one day soon.

Tips for NYC area food souvenirs (ingredients or products)?

Kossar's Bialys would make for a great experience and story

Seven Brunch Reservations, Please help me pick one!

Of all your choices, ABC Kitchen is by far the best. Haven't been to Telepan Local or Le Philosophe, but Hundred Acres and The Butterfly are mediocre, August is too (and the greenhouse area was like a humid den with terribly uncomfortable chairs when I went).

List of restaurants in NYC--which should we try?

Union Square Cafe - but that's a personal choice. I've been to Del Posto and wasn't wowed and it will cost you a decent amount more. Given your preference for out of the box, I'm not sure Union Square Cafe or Del Posto would fit the bill.

I'd instead say The NoMad, ABC Kitchen (not so out of the box but lively, trendy, and delicious), Estela, Pearl and Ash, Ma Peche, Gato (haven't been yet but it's brand new) or something like that, but it may be difficult to get reservations depending on the date you are looking to dine.

Birthday Lunch near Public Theater

If you arrive at 11:45/12, the wait is less than 15-20 - plenty of time before a show.

Birthday Lunch near Public Theater

Second Lafayette
I'd add Il Buco Alimentari
Gato (if they'll be open for lunch)
Ippudo (because I love it and even though it may not be birthday special, it's still awesome)
A little more north:
Casa Mono
Maialino

Too bad Narcissa isn't open for lunch - maybe an early dinner instead?? I really enjoyed my dinner there this past weekend.

What's happening with the DOH?

I worked for a high end restaurant group and they sure did close during surprise inspections. Lunch reservations were cancelled and no further tables were sat after the inspectors arrived. Any callers for later in the day lunch reservations were told that the restaurant was temporarily closed due to [insert some mechanical issue].

10 days in NYC - itinerary feedback please

I also am not fond of Louro- I've been 3 times - 2 for Monday night dinners that were just mediocre. I'm not sure why it gets so much love here but after 3 times, I think I've tried it enough to form an educated opinion.

I'd also recommend Narcissa, Pearl and Ash, Estela, Ippudo,

NOHO lunch suggestions?

Most of my suggestions are south but walkable - Taim, Parm, Mile End.

There are a bunch of chains on 8th street between Broadway and University (Chipotle, Just Salad, Maoz, etc.) for easy pick up.

A bit east - Otto's Tacos, Caracas, Tacos Morelos, etc.

The Smile, Cafe Gitane, Five Points, the new Sant Ambroeus in Soho (can't speak to the food, but the location is right), Maison Laduree, and I'll second/third Lafayette.

Cocktails before Scarpetta tomorrow evening

I just ate at Scarpetta this weekend and I was pretty disappointed. I've been 3-4x in the recent past and loved it, but this night everything was just ok.

The bartender filled my glass of prosecco about 3/4 of the way, which I've never seen before - I even left it sitting on the bar for a while assuming they had to open another bottle to finish the pour. No chips were served.

We ordered the polenta which was barely warm, though delicious. The breadbasket wasn't nearly as good as it has been in the past and it was never refilled.

The pastas and mains were good but everything wasn't hot enough, except the spaghetti as they brought it to the table with a cloche.

Everything overall was fine - I was expecting an above average experience, as I've had in the past, but this was just OK, mediocre even.

For a Friday night, the restaurant had no buzz or energy, which also surprised and disappointed me. I'm not running back.

Best pizza in Little Italy?

I agree with most opinions on here already:
Rubirosa is great- I really love their vodka pizza and their meatballs.

You can also head to Forcella or even better (though slightly further), Motorino.

Keste is also a great option that's in walking distance from Little Italy

early saturday night cheap eats

Depends on the size of your group - you just said it would be a couple of friends.

For 4 or less, all are ok. For 5 or more, Rubirosa would be your best bet. The others have larger tables but maybe 1 or 2 (max) so if you aren't there early enough, you'll be waiting for the first large party to finish their meal. I love them all for different reasons - it's really hard to pick one.

Let me also add ippudo - ramen is $15-17 but it's worth every penny (IMHO). If you are there early (!), you should be fine. If you go at prime time, you'll wait 1-2 hours.

@ttrockwood - the only budget stipulation was entrees around $15 - that's pretty accurate for Ssam bar, no?

early saturday night cheap eats

Cafe Gitane, Rubirosa, Bianca, Cafe Habana, Mile End, Westville, Ssam Bar, Cafe Mogador, Motorino, Caracas Arepa Bar

Not all of these are comfortable, or easy to get into at prime time, but if you're going early, you should be fine. The food is good and cheap.

Where can I find brunch that's not comically overpriced?!

Peels, the Smile, Cafe Gitane, - all reasonably priced and solid (the first 2 take reservations).

I'd recommend Prune and Cafe Habana but they might be very crowded.

I also love ippudo for a weekend lunch/brunch but you have to plan around the potential wait.

Anyone been to Do or Dine recently? I went a while ago and loved it - is it still as good? What kind of wait (if any) would you expect on a Saturday evening for 2?
