Four Days in NYC - Need help with my itinerary

Yes - solo diners at Clinton St. don't have to wait until the 4 counter seats are taken.

nomad or dirty french or carbone??

I agree with you about Carbone - it's good, but it's stupidly expensive and not good enough to justify the price. I haven't been to Dirty French, but I love love love the NoMad.

A few specific questions about my quick trip to the city this week.

I've been known to consume 3 spicy spring - I'm a girl.

They're fantastic.

"Eating weekend" without kids in NYC: We want to live it up!

Spiritchaser, what did you have at Root and Bone that you enjoyed? Maybe I went on an off day but I had one of the worst brunches I can remember. Everything was just not good at all. If I'm going to indulge in fattening, fried, southern comfort-type foods, they better be good. My meal was bad enough that I don't want to try it again!

What do you think of my plans?

Having been to all 3 at least a few times (and some many times) each, I'd personally rank them Ippudo, then Ivan, then Totto.

Emilio's Ballato, has anyone been recently, is it a great version of a red saucer ????

It's one of my favorite spots - great food, perfect atmosphere (if you're looking for red sauce italian). I think it's hard to compare to Carbone because the price points are drastically different. Carbone is probably better, but it'll cost you 2-4x as much.

Won't be returning to Per Se

The point is that it was 3 hours away from the reservation time. A restaurant should make guests feel welcome, not turn them down in hopes of getting a second guest in just 3 hours (extremely unlikely - I worked at a high end restaurant for years and we absolutely would've taken a single, ESPECIALLY for a 5:45 reservation time). You're comparing two different things here - sharing a tasting menu and dining as a solo guest. They are not comparable.

Won't be returning to Per Se

It's silly that they turned you down at 2pm for a 5:45 day-of reservation. Their loss.

I'd say there's little chance it was filled by 2 guests. They missed out on one loyal, high-paying customer by being greedy and showing poor customer service. Restaurants are in the service industry; they shouldn't forget that.

Soho (cool, hip, fun, trendy) lunch with teenage girl

Cute/trendy places The food is good at all of them, but nothing mindblowing:
Jack's Wife Frida
Cafe Gitane
Sant Ambroeus
The Dutch
Laduree
Lafayette
Navy

Navy

Has anyone been to Navy? I've heard it's good and I'm thinking of going on Saturday. Any opinions?

N.Y.C. visit

If you haven't been to Barbuto in many years, it's probably not best to comment on it. The ambiance you describe is nothing like Barbuto. It's loud, unrefined, skews younger, pretty trendy. Food is easy and delicious - best chicken I've had in a long time.

2 Burn-Your-Face-Off Spicy Dinners?

I loved the spicy ramen at Ivan and agree that it's the spiciest ramen I've had in the city, but it is still not "burn-your-face-off spicy." I could tolerate much more than that!

Aside from some mentions above, I'd direct you to thai in the outer boroughs (e.g. Sripraphai) which is a different variety of thai than Zabb Elee, but I prefer it.

Peasant Restaurant

How many were you?

If you calculate the cost/person for dessert had you eaten from their menu (i.e what they had to forgo given that you brought your own dessert), I bet $21 is a bargain!

They would've told you up front the cake plating fee if you'd ask I'm sure.

Feed me! Where to eat?

When I dined there last week, they weren't yet serving food at the bar at Batard.

@foodwhisperer I think Chevre D'Or was the best meal of my life.

Fuss free, cool dinner for not so new to NYC

Loratliff, what about Le Jardin? I went on your recommendation last week and loved it. That sounds like it might fit Arugala's bill.

Lunch in lower east side this Friday

Most of my suggestions are more East Village/Nolita, but close enough....
Lafayette, Il Buco Alimentari, Cafe Gitane, Cafe Mogador, Northern Spy, Shopsin's...

I love Ivan Ramen but I personally would not want to eat ramen on a date...unless we're at the point where I'm not longer worried about getting food on my shirt.

solo casual breakfast soho, village, nolita

If you're talking weekdays, you can do that at the Smile, Lafayette, Cafe Gitane, Il Buco Alimentari. Weekends you'd probably be overwhelmed by people, unless you go early.

Gotham/Gramercy Tavern/Annisa/Union Square cafe - which one this time?

Given your location and past experiences, what about The NoMad instead of any of these options?

My choices in order based on the options above are Annisa, GT, USC, Gotham.

Any veggie restaurant in NYC like Greens or Millennium in SF?

Similarly casual are Souen and Dimes or Angelika. All pretty solid for non-meat eaters.

Where can I find great Greek yogurt? I had some for dessert last night

Try White Moustache handmade yogurt. I know Murray's Cheese at the Grand Central Market sells it. It's amazing. One of their flavors is honey and walnuts.

The Pavilion in Union Sq, when did this open?

It is NOT good. Careless staff, over-priced and not very good food/drink. I've been for happy hour and brunch and regretted both. The space is nice and it's great to be outdoors, but everything else pretty much sucks.

Pick One

I agree 100% with sam1.
Casa Mono is the only one that entices me. Hearth is good but boring, and Crispo is a small step above mediocre.

Your favorite tapas?

If the black sausage was morcilla, it's made with rice and should be somewhat mushy.

It does!! However, they no longer will take day-of in-person reservations...

Recommendations for visitors (you must be getting tired of this)

I'd steer you from Bar Pitti and recommend Emilio's Ballato instead. I find bar pitti to be a bit too euro-trashy for my taste. Just walking past there on a weekend at lunch or dinner time turns me off!

Wait time at Ippudo

Waits for 1 in general are minimal. Worst case you go have a drink around the corner and they'll text you when your spot is ready.

In Soho tonight, good takeout recs?

Hampton Chutney is good but nothing to write home about. I'd recommend Parm, Rubirosa, or Taim over it.

ISO Food Related Event/Class to Bring Clients To

Sur la Table also does hands on cooking - Bouley's are the kind where you watch the chef and eat what he cooks, but there's not audience participation.
