Pete Wells's Top Ten NYC Ramen

also, per Ziggy's suggestion: Bassanova's Green Curry Ramen - it's on Mott just south of Canal...and it's delicious.

Help Me To Decide Where to Eat on Xmas Eve

Maialino is the best (by far) of your options in my opinion. You are going to get destroyed by people here for holding 5 reservations for Christmas Eve so I would advise you to cancel what you do not plan to use quickly.

Lively birthday dinner

I've very much enjoyed my two meals there - get the beet salad. The burger is great too!

Also, call the NoMad. I've called each time I didn't see what I wanted on OT and asked to be put on the wait list. At least a few of those times they had the exact time I wanted and put me in the book. They openly stated, "We don't put all of our tables on OpenTable."

Please review my restaurant choices for NYC trip.

I love Rubirosa. I agree with rrems - if one hasn't tried the pizza, one should not judge. I don't think they're trying to be authentic in any sense. It's just good. Great vodka pizza and meatballs. The mains are, in fact, "nothing special."

Which restaurant have you eaten at the most?

I don't see all that many people spelling it wrong but so so many people pronounce it wrong - even Bobby Flay! It kills me.

It's not pronounced like battle or cattle, which is how many say it. It's chi-powt-lay. Not chi-powt-ill. Drives me insane.

NY chowhound visiting Austin

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions! I had such a good time and ate well at every single meal.

We did Hopdaddy's for dinner Wednesday evening and I loved it.

Thursday was an all day Thanksgiving feast but I did get to experience Buc-ee's. We definitely don't have anything quite like that in NYC.

Friday we had tacos. I believe the place was called La Tradicion. Great tacos al pastor and watermelon water. Dinner was at Salt Lick - I thought it was great - food, atmosphere, everything.

Saturday I was only in Austin for one meal - we went to Hoover's. I had my first queso experience and overall loved the food and atmosphere.

After all the great suggestions, I regret not having more time to dine. I guess I'll just have to come back soon.

Thanks for the reply cpencis. I have no dietary restrictions. I'll be staying in the Northeast part of the city with a friend but I will have access to a car and will travel (quite far) for good food.

Thanks for the other suggestions chrisdds98 and Rptrane- I've added them to my list!

NY chowhound visiting Austin

Hi everyone!

I'm coming to visit Austin this week (Wednesday-Saturday eve). Thanksgiving is taken care of, but I have no plans for other meals.

I've only been to Austin once and it was probably about 4 years ago. I amazingly got to try Franklin BBQ before it was what it is today and it was excellent. As much as I'd like to go back, I will not be waiting on a multi-hour line to try it again.

I'm looking for moderately priced (under $30 entrees) lunches and dinners. Ideally I'd love to eat at local spots and holes in the wall. I am aware of the high end spots like Uchi and I'd love to try it, but I won't be too upset if it doesn't work out - we have pretty good sushi here in NYC.

I'd so much appreciate your suggestions (and happily return the favor for anyone visitng NYC)! Thank you in advance!

Where can I still find great "dairy" babka, rugelach, and cheese danish?

I agree with was_bk that Breads babka is pretty stellar.

Eating our faces off, any suggestions?

I'd neg num pang (personally), second ippudo, replace marta with motorino (even though I liked Marta a lot, Motorino still wins and will be cheaper).

I'd add Taim for a fantastic falafel, Katz's for a pastrami sandwich, Russ and Daughters for a bit of lox.

Coasts' Levain suggestion also is hard to beat. Best cookies ever.

Any place in Noho/East Village worth trying for pre-theater dinner?

In addition to Ziggy's great list, you can add:
Il Buco AV
The Smile
Saxon and Parole
Cafe Gitane
Acme
Emilio Ballato's

The options are kind of endless (and good)!

Looking for help with one more restaurant choice

I agree - Jack's Wife Freda is just OK. Long brunch lines and tiny portions (by my standards). Totally skippable.

Better local options - Osteria Morini, Cafe Gitane, Parm, Rubirosa, Il Buco Alimentari, etc.

Name that Italian on E. Houston (Whole Foods vicinity)?

I agree that it has to be Ballato's. Never had tripe there (and not sure if it's on the current menu), but I do love the rest of the food. I live less than a block away and there are no other Italian restaurants on Houston near Whole Foods that I can think of. There was Pulino's but that wasn't around in '86.

I really like Ivan Ramen. That said, I like Ippudo more.

New Opening- The Gander

My experience there was exactly as you described. Needless to say, I haven't been back. The prices were quite high relative to the size of the portions.

Yes - solo diners at Clinton St. don't have to wait until the 4 counter seats are taken.

nomad or dirty french or carbone??

I agree with you about Carbone - it's good, but it's stupidly expensive and not good enough to justify the price. I haven't been to Dirty French, but I love love love the NoMad.

A few specific questions about my quick trip to the city this week.

I've been known to consume 3 spicy spring - I'm a girl.

They're fantastic.

"Eating weekend" without kids in NYC: We want to live it up!

Spiritchaser, what did you have at Root and Bone that you enjoyed? Maybe I went on an off day but I had one of the worst brunches I can remember. Everything was just not good at all. If I'm going to indulge in fattening, fried, southern comfort-type foods, they better be good. My meal was bad enough that I don't want to try it again!

What do you think of my plans?

Having been to all 3 at least a few times (and some many times) each, I'd personally rank them Ippudo, then Ivan, then Totto.

Emilio's Ballato, has anyone been recently, is it a great version of a red saucer ????

It's one of my favorite spots - great food, perfect atmosphere (if you're looking for red sauce italian). I think it's hard to compare to Carbone because the price points are drastically different. Carbone is probably better, but it'll cost you 2-4x as much.

Won't be returning to Per Se

The point is that it was 3 hours away from the reservation time. A restaurant should make guests feel welcome, not turn them down in hopes of getting a second guest in just 3 hours (extremely unlikely - I worked at a high end restaurant for years and we absolutely would've taken a single, ESPECIALLY for a 5:45 reservation time). You're comparing two different things here - sharing a tasting menu and dining as a solo guest. They are not comparable.

Won't be returning to Per Se

It's silly that they turned you down at 2pm for a 5:45 day-of reservation. Their loss.

I'd say there's little chance it was filled by 2 guests. They missed out on one loyal, high-paying customer by being greedy and showing poor customer service. Restaurants are in the service industry; they shouldn't forget that.
