The Pavilion in Union Sq, when did this open?

It is NOT good. Careless staff, over-priced and not very good food/drink. I've been for happy hour and brunch and regretted both. The space is nice and it's great to be outdoors, but everything else pretty much sucks.

Pick One

I agree 100% with sam1.
Casa Mono is the only one that entices me. Hearth is good but boring, and Crispo is a small step above mediocre.

Your favorite tapas?

If the black sausage was morcilla, it's made with rice and should be somewhat mushy.

It does!! However, they no longer will take day-of in-person reservations...

Recommendations for visitors (you must be getting tired of this)

I'd steer you from Bar Pitti and recommend Emilio's Ballato instead. I find bar pitti to be a bit too euro-trashy for my taste. Just walking past there on a weekend at lunch or dinner time turns me off!

Waits for 1 in general are minimal. Worst case you go have a drink around the corner and they'll text you when your spot is ready.

In Soho tonight, good takeout recs?

Hampton Chutney is good but nothing to write home about. I'd recommend Parm, Rubirosa, or Taim over it.

Delicious meal ordered in, downtown

Taim Falafel - they should deliver to you and it's so good

Sur la Table also does hands on cooking - Bouley's are the kind where you watch the chef and eat what he cooks, but there's not audience participation.

Loud?

Definitely avoid Gato and Estela if noise is an issue. Narcissa is buzzy but palatable. The NoMad could likely go either way depending on the time you eat but make a request for a quiet table and I'm sure they'll accommodate - or dine on the early side. I can't speak to the rest.

Bar Primi - East Village

I went last Saturday and was also rather disappointed. We were a group and tried 5 appetizers (including the meatballs), 6 pastas, the Saturday special (hangar steak) entree, and 2 desserts.

The appetizers:
sweet pea & farro salad - good, nothing special
brooklyn arugula - same
stuffed meatballs - good, but small portion
mozzarella - hard to mess that up
san daniele prosciutto - same

Pastas - None of them were memorable; all of them were rather small
calamarata
rigatoni - best of the group
taglioni al pesto
fiore di carciofi
Orecchiette

Hangar steak - delicious

We had the GELATO DEL GIORNO (which was hazelnut), and the ORGANIC STRAWBERRY COPPA (refreshing and not too heavy). Neither was all that great.

It was loud and difficult to hear across the table, but service was attentive.

GATO last night

I went last night (Thursday) for the second time. We had an 8:30 reservation and arrived 5 minutes early. The hostess told us they were running 20 minutes behind. The space around the bar on either side is minimal as it's really just an aisle for servers to pass. With the combination of people seated at the bar and the tables behind, there's really not enough room for one to stand comfortably and allow a server to pass by. It is not the type of bar where you could stand 2-3 people deep. Every single bar seat and bar table was taken when we waiting and no one appeared ready to leave for a while. If I were seated at the tables right next to the bar, I would not be happy about it.

Aside from our table not being ready when we arrived, everything else was pretty good. We had 3 bar snacks - tiny, which I knew already, but good: Chorizo, eggplant and burrata. We also had the lamb sausage pizza which was better than I expected it to be - sweet/spicy red sauce, good sausage. We also had the eggs which were as good as they were on my first trip. The shrimp appetizer is skippable. The halibut was pretty darn good, and the paella was good (better the first time), but not AWESOME. The wait between the first few dishes and the mains was too long as well.

Mr. Flay was in the kitchen and Anne Burrell, Michael Simon and Chris Santos were dining in the restaurant.

Gramercy Tavern or Blue Hill?

GT - hands down. Both are good, but GT is just better. It's grander, nicer, more celebratory.

Ivan Ramen

I just went last night - no wait at 7:30 (nor did there seem to be one when we left after 9:30). We sat outside in the back and it was really lovely.

Only tried the scrapple waffle (great) and the spicy ramen, which was pretty darn spicy. Food was really good and I'll be back to try more.

ABC Kitchen tonight

Don't skip the crab toast with lemon aioli.

I wasn't wowed by any of the pizzas I've tried or the burger.

+1 on Pretzel dusted calamari

I haven't had some items on the current menu but the housemade ricotta, rhubarb compote and grilled bread and the wood oven roasted fiddlehead ferns with spring garlic and lemon sound pretty darn good.

+1 Pearl and Ash
+1 Narcissa

I'll add Gato - new and pretty great would describe it well.

I can't choose! Marc Forgione, Louro or Pearl & Ash for a Sunday night. Who's been to all and has a strong preference?

Agree on both. I'd add that P&A isn't particularly comfortable depending on where you are seated.

MF is a beautiful spot that I find can feel pretty romantic - dark lighting, candles.

IMHO
Best food - P&A; second: MF
Most romantic - MF
Easiest to get into: Louro
Liveliest: P&A; second: Louro

At Murray's definitely sample their Cabot Clothbound Cheddar - I dream about that cheese.

Nearby-ish:
Sample some ham and chorizo from Despana

A macaron from Laudree

A chocolate from Kee's

Creative pay-your-own-way wedding eve drinks/dinner venue for 25

The only thing I can think of that would be something like a Chelsea Market or Gotham West Market where everyone goes off to buy what they want and you congregate somewhere to eat together. I'm not sure if you're allowed to BYOB in the markets and you also might not be able to drink on the high line but I could be wrong about that.

What about trying Sockerbit? - https://www.sockerbit.com/contact.html

Dylan's is pretty gross and Economy candy might not thrill a 15-year-old but Sockerbit is pretty and has great stuff.

Pearl and Ash - Alder - Estela

I suppose we could have ordered more at Alder than the other two, but in any case,
Pub Cheese (really enjoyed), pigs in a blanket (enjoyed), Octopus (good), Rye Pasta (meh), and some other things that aren't on the current menu therefore I have no memory of what they were.

Aside from portion sizes, which could very well be similar at all 3, I still enjoyed Alder the most.

Pearl and Ash - Alder - Estela

I've been to all 3 and the only one I'm dying to try again is Alder. P&A was very good, but I left hungry because I found portions small. Some dishes at Estela were really only OK, others excellent, and I also left hungry (maybe I have a giant appetite??) but Alder was fun, delicious and inventive. Some dishes were misses (the Pastrami pasta was just ok and I'd really been looking forward to trying it) but overall I am excited to go back one day soon.

Seven Brunch Reservations, Please help me pick one!

Of all your choices, ABC Kitchen is by far the best. Haven't been to Telepan Local or Le Philosophe, but Hundred Acres and The Butterfly are mediocre, August is too (and the greenhouse area was like a humid den with terribly uncomfortable chairs when I went).
