Asian grocery stores in San Antonio

That may be the Hung Phong Market on Remount. There is also TNK Market on north New Braunfels
near Fort Sam , but you have to get there from IH35,as you can no longer cut through Fort Sam to get there.

Have you ever eaten at a restaurant that got made over BEFORE the makeover, and then saw it on TV?

Nope, Never had.I think somewhere there are some reviews for the San Antonio restaurant Mamma'Lee's kitchen. But it was their location on Walzem Road that was made over, not their first one elsewhere in town which is not made over. I'm trying to stay away as much as possible in regards to eating out,as it costs money and i'd rather save that money by home cooking. That is unless I go someplace like the mall or where, and then I'll get a Subway or grilled chicken sandwich from Chic Fila.

American-Chinese food is real Chinese food?

Before Chung King, there was La Choy, which was started in the 1920s. I used to have a 1920s Sears Grocery Catalog(yes, both they and Montgomery Wards sold groceries) which has la Choy products in it. An interesting take on it is the book Fashionable Foods which as about chinese and other foods in America. This is like the debate on mexican food. Most mexican food is called TexMex.Nothing wrong with it.The Tejanos,or mexican texans who lived in Texas and the southwestern US used what ingredients they could find locally or imported. during the spanish days and later under the Republic of Texas ,etc. Nothing wrong with it or chinese american food. These people used food stuffs that were local and what they might have bought at some store that had been imported from their home land. That goes for italian American,German American, etc. To me it's just splitting hairs.

chicken fried steak in texas

I haven't eaten one in ages.Actually,Grumpy's is on Nacogdoches Road out near Bracken. If you go to Bracken, you can stop at the Bracken Cafe for their good burgers.Don't know if they have chicken fried steak..Have to try Grumpy's sometime. Not impressed by Alamo Cafe for anything,is okay but not worth me going out of my way for.The Antler Cafe is on USHWY 281 North, and there is also a Clear Springs south of New Braunfels on TX Hwy 46, in the town of Clear Springs, that's the original one. I think Popo's Cafe in Nelson City may have it.Their food is good. You have to take IH10 and go past Boerne and get off at the Welfare exit. It's located in the old Nelson City dancehall.

Another place is Specht's Store out off Blanco Road north of San Antonio.I think they have a website.

Specht's Store has been there for ages, but never eaten there. It might have been a little community at one time, but not much there except a few buildings and the cemetery.

San Antonio and Boerne trip report

Glad you all enjoyed yourselves. Don't go out to Boerne, so not sure on the dining.Yes, next time you come, go to Lockhart or Luling for BBQ.Harmon's BBQ in Cibolo which is two miles down the road from me has good bbq. Lots of restaurants in San Antonio have breakfast tacos, you can get bacon and egg, carne guisada, etc.etc.
I agree with the County Line.Ate there years ago with my sister, was not impressed, and I'm a local. Most of the places downtown are more tourist traps.
You can check out San Antonio Current's website they have restaurant reviews for the next time you come.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #11 - 01/18/12 (Spoilers)

Haven't been to Whole Foods in a while, but don't recall seeing it there in the past.Maybe the chicken came from H.E.B. Central Market on Broadway, and got sent to Whole Foods.Course don't recall it at Central Market either. They may have ordered it special for the show from some company that supplies fancy meats like that, and shipped it to the store, maybe the same with the forbidden rice, though i thought I saw that here recently at the Schertz H.E.B. Will have to look for it next time.
Was nice to see the Southwest Craft Center all decorated for the dinner. It's right across from the San Antonio Public Library, which used to be the old Sears Roebuck store. The Craft Center is the old Ursuline Academy, built by the Ursuline Sisters in the 1800s.
Loved all the dishes, and Grayson's did look like she killed the chicken on the plate.I guess Beverely in a way played it too safe.Never have used arrowroot to thicken anything, just flour or cornstarch, so am not sure what the judges were refering to in regards to her sauce.

Barbacoa in San Antonio Downtown

I hardly ever get downtown. You might check out SA Current magazine online, maybe they have something.Only time I have eaten down there was at Rivercenter Mall, and Zuni Cafe on the Riverwalk years ago.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #5 - 11/30/11 (Spoilers)

You're right about that.Old money types like you describe rarely mix with the noveau riche, like these bimbos. And yes, some of them are down right rude, etc.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #5 - 11/30/11 (Spoilers)

I got home late from TJMAXX,so I didn't see the start with the QuickFire Challenge.I did see some of it but turned it off, since I can't those so called "Real Housewives" whether in Dallas or elsewhere.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #4 - 11/23/11 (Spoilers)

I had no idea he owned any restaurants in San Antonio.I know their next stop is onto Dallas.

Thanksgiving in Canyon/Amarillo

Both Canyon and Amarillo have websites, certainly Amarillo does.
Check out their Chambers of Commerce. Some of the Amarillo hotels should have something.
Maybe other places too. I wouldn't mind going to one of the buffets in downtown San Antonio
at the hotels or a few other places, but I don't want to spend 30 to 50 dollars for one person, since Christmas is coming up.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #3 - 11/16/11 (Spoilers)

Most mexicans eat corn tortillas.I think it's more in Sonora and northern Mexico they also use the flour tortillas.Enchiladas are always made with corn tortillas. I don't think Beverely got pushy-pushy at the Whole Foods meat market. If I remember, one team went to Whole Foods and the other team to Culebra Meat Market. Which is funny, since culebra means snake in spanish.Never eaten at Alcado's and I've been here 40 years.
Flour tortillas here are eaten mainly in breakfast tacos, and with fajitas and often served with your meal, though they will ask you if you want either corn or flour, and bring them in a tortilla warmer that keeps them hot.
While the judges weren't happy they didn't make fresh homemade tortillas, Johhny Hernandez and the guests didn't seem too broken up about it. Many hispanics here don't make their own tortillas.I see families shopping at H.E.B.,the big South Texas-Mexico grocery chain buying the H.E.B. brand ready made tortillas, both the corn and the flour. There are also tortilla factories here too.
There are some molinas in San Antonio that make the fresh masa for tortillas and tamales, but the chefs probably had no idea where to buy it.

Bravo must have some contract with Whole Foods, because H.E.B. Central Market next to the University of the Incarnate Word has all sorts of shrimp, fish and other meats and vegetables.
It's located in Alamo Heights, which is our version of Beverely Hills you might say.Lot of old bungalows and mansions around dating back to the 1900s.They also have mexican food items and spices as well.
Yeah knew Keith was going to bite the dust. However they still might have used the cooked shrimp in the enchiladas or made some sort of mexican shrimp salad.
I thought Gloria said she liked cabbage stuffed with picadillo.
I can understand why Padma said there was no connection of the cabbage to the other foods because it appeared they didn't even bother to stuff them.As far as the mole was concerned,if they didn't have time to make the sauce, then buy Dona Maria's or other brand of mole.

Back to the quickfire, Goggle Sweetwater ,Texas. They have a ratttlesnake roundup every year and cook them up.
Can't wait to see where the rodeo is at. Could be at some county fair around here, but they better not put beans in it.
As far as Last Chance Kitchen goes, I thought in the ad for it, they showed Keith.

Top Chef Texas - Ep. #1 - 11/02/11 (Spoilers)

Have to agree about Tyler. He was Mr.Know - It-All from his attitude.Man did he butcher that pork. When he was ruining the pork, I thought about my grandfather, who was a butcher.Grandpa would have hit him upside the head with the saw if he had been alive to see that. Don't recall them using the bubble deal in the past with the contestants, or maybe I'm wrong. The house they are staying is either in Alamo Heights, or Monte Vista in San Antonio.
It's one of those mansions from the 1920s or 30s that are common here.Lovely place.
Still haven't figured out where their Top Chef Kitchen is in town. The meat may have come from H.E.B.Central Market down next to the University of the Incarnate Word on Broadway.
It's a foodie's dream. I can't wait for the next show, which might invovle beef maybe, because beef is very common in barbecue here.

Culver's

I haven't tried them yet.Unfortunately, there isn't one out by Randolph AFB or New Braunfels, it's way out in San Antonio somewhere. I have looked at their website, and the food looks good.

Top Chef Texas - Season 9 - debuts on Wed., November 2nd!

If you check out mysa.com, the San Antonio Express News website, they have an article about it.In fact there is an article about Top Chef in San Antonio on the bottom left column of today's paper. It continues inside the front section, plus in in the SA Living section there is a mention of it as well. And of course they mention Austin and Dallas. There is even a photo in the paper of Padma in front of the Alamo.KSAT12 and WOAI have about it on their website. One of them did an interview with her and Tom. Don't know if KENS5 or KABB news has anything on this.
Can't wait to see it tonight.

San Antonio Thanksgiving 2011

I just know the hotels around here do buffets, which I can't afford. My speed is more marie Callendars or Ryan's or Jim's if I don't go to my brother's house, since sometimes they visit his wife's family in Alice, texas that is.

“It’s the Jewish bacon,”

According to my dad, grandma would use chicken fat sometimes when making cookies for the holidays back in Milwaukee. Never asked where she learned to do that.

Top Chef Texas in November

The San Antonio Express News had in yesterday's food section an article about Top Chef.Apparently Top Chef Texas which was shot in San Antonio,Austin, and Dallas -Fort Worth is supposed to air November 5th .I have the article at home so will check the date.I can't wait to see them cooking in front of the Alamo with Pee Wee Herman as a judge.he was in town at the time they were shooting and also paid a visit to the San Antonio Missions baseball team.Their mascot is a puffy taco. The taco runs around the field, and kids try to catch him.One of the team's supporters is Henry's Puffy Tacos, a mexican restaurant here, hence the mascot.

Tamales of the Mississippi Delta

Check out the book,The Tex Mex Cookbook by Robb Walsh, which has a chapter on tamales and mentions these. He has a recipe in there how to make them, and also chapters on tacos, enchiladas and other stuff with recipes. I never heard of them before his book either.
I do however recall my dad saying grandpa would purchase sometimes tamales from an older mexican gentleman and bring them home to the family. This was in the 1920s back in Hot Springs,Arkansas.I think there was even a chili parlor downtown too,in those days.

Chik Fil a has discontinued their sweet potato waffle fries

What ,Sweet Potato Fries at Chick-fil-A??? Haven't seen them in the San Antonio area.
Must have been some sort of regional try out.It would have made more sense in the south.

Butchers dont Butcher?

I'm sure in San Antonio there are some mexican butchers around, and out by me, there's Penshorn's in Marion and Granzine's in New Braunfels, and they cut and grind their own.I haven't bought any meat from them, but i heard they cut whole carcasses.H>E.B. and H.E.B.Central Market have meat counters, and I assume will cut up meat and filet fish for you.Since there's just myself, I just buy the packaged meats. By the way for some of you that mentioned having problems getting the supermarket guys to cut stuff up,etc. well my grandfather used to call them bandsaw butchers according to my late father.Grandpa was a butcher in Milwaukee. He could not only kill and gut the cow, pig, etc. but cut it up too.

Top Chef in San Antonio

Apparently Top Chef from Bravo has been filming in San Antonio.According to the San Antonio Express News, they were filming outside at the Culinary Institute of America at the old Pearl Brewery,on the river. Also, they were at the Alamo too. According to local media,Paul Ruebens, who played Pee Wee Herman, visited the Dallas Cowboys training camp. I saw him on tv with Tony Romo and some of the other players. Apparently they were filming a spot with Top Chef at the Alamo, and Pee Wee Herman is in it.Don't sure what the connection is, I assume to judge some food. Thought i'd pass it along.

Davila's Barbecue in Seguin Texas [ 1959 ]

Hey, that's funny you mentioned this place.I was thinking of going out to Seguin and maybe going to the library there and just walk around downtown.Never eaten at Davila's, and we moved back to this area out near Randolph AFB back in 1971. Now I'll have to try them maybe Saturday. Still want to try Gonzales Market on W.W.White Road, the original one is still going strong in Gonzales.

Joes Crab Shack

Oh that's funny Duppie! Haven't eaten at one in a long time, the Joe's that is.I noticed their prices have gone up, so I tend to buy seafood from H.E.B.Grocerystores here in San Antonio and cook at home.Only time I recall them singing was for somebody's birthday, don't recall any dancing.

Uvalde

Haven't been out there in years. You could check out Roadfood under restaurants maybe for some Texas places that way,and www.texasescapes.com has info on Uvalde and the are out there.never ate there in town unless it was a Dairy Queen years ago.

Caldwell County BBQ: R&G

Haven't been to McMahan in years, and was unaware there was any bbq place there.
By the way, what is Eureste's in Waelder? Is it another bbq place?
at Texas Escapes, they mentioned a bbq place in Belmont on US HWY90 Alternate that goes to Gonzales, haven't been out that way either in ages.

BBQ near FT Sam Houston or Lackland Air Force Base

I saw on Yelp Bob's BBQ on FM78 out in Kirby, which isn't too far from Fort Sam to go to.

BBQ near FT Sam Houston or Lackland Air Force Base

Don't know what's out by Lackland. On South W.W.White Road, is Gonzales Meat Market, which is from the town of Gonzales, and has bbq. There is also Mr.and Mrs.G's Kitchen, which has good reviews. You can check out Urbanspoon or Yelp or Yahoo Local if no one here can help you. There is I think a bbq place on St.Mary's street over by St.Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church and Our Lady of Sorrows, but can't remember the name. There was one on Broadway down by the old Butterkrust Bakery that may still be there, but the name escapes me.
If you have time, you can drive out to Luling to City Market which is off of Interstate 10 ,you just take US Hwy 90 East to go to the town. There is also Lockhart, which has Black's and Smitty's.I haven't tried Kreuz's yet. These all have websites and it's not that far from San Antonio.
You might see if San Antonio Magazine has a website. They have an article about new places in San Antonio, and may list some bbq places. I think there is also a Grady's BBQ on the acess road near Fort Sam.You may want to check out their website for that location.Don't know if that helps out.

My first time at Chipotle.... or, what the hell was that bland beige lump I just ate?

Haven't been there in ages, so I'm not sure how the food at the Forum at Olympia Hills out in the Live Oak-Selma (Tx) area is.The few times I ate there it wasn't bad. Around here and the San Antonio area are a gadzillion mexican restaurants, so no need to really eat there.
And yes there are great mexican places and lousy ones too,in the home of tex mex.

San Antonio with kids?

Don't have children, so not to sure on kid friendly places, but when you get here there is a family magazine for places and things to do in San Antonio that's free and the resort may have some copies. There is a place on Avenue B near the Witte Museum called Old Aussie. They sell baked goods as well as sandwiches and other things and have gluten free stuff.Go to San Antonio Express News in Google search, and get their website. This place was listed under the Food section of yesterday's paper. While they don't have a kiddie playground, Bracken Cafe, out in the little community of Bracken is northeast of San Antonio on Nacogdoches Road past Rolling Oaks Mall. They have a website I believe, and I know good burgers. You can also then drive to New Braunfels to Landa Park, which is nice.In the summer they run the miniature train around the park.
