Turkeys 2013

I ordered the Massachusetts bird from Lancaster that Savenor's sells last year, a 12 or so pounder, smoked it, and it was fantastic. Definitely the best Thanksgiving turkey I've ever had, but it was also the only the second home-smoked bird I've eaten, so that could have clouded my judgement.

It was foolishly expensive ($5.29/lb) compared with other options, but the way it came out made me convince myself it was worth it.

Best place to buy ribs?

I don't remember the price and knowing the source it might be out of your budget, but I always rely on Savenors in Cabmridge, especially when I have something very specific (like a St. Louis rib) in mind. With a day or two notice they can more or less provide anything.

different woods for smoking and barbecue

I looked up the supplier that the BBQ Barn uses for its wood chunks and it appears you can get a decent size bag for much less than sold in the retail store over the internet. They have a great selection of local wood sourced in Maine and seem to ship for free via UPS ground.

Maine Shrimp on menus

Garden at the Cellar in Cambridge has a (very tasty) Maine Shrimp small plate on their regular menu, served in the shell with the heads on, that I had a couple of weeks ago. I would highly recommend it if you find yourself in the neighborhood.

Where's the Duck Fat?

I bought duck fat at Savenors in Cambridge last month and while I don't remember specifically, BobB's price sounds just about right. I called ahead and ordered a quart when I needed it.

Mexican Coke

There was Mexican Coke in a check-out cooler at Porter Square Shaw's of all places. Not sure if that was just a random find, however.

squid ink pasta

Capones Pasta in Somerville (Union Sq.) and Cambridge (Mass Ave., North Cambridge) carries squid ink pasta. Dave's Fresh Pasta in Davis Sq. Somerville probably does too, although I don't know that for a fact.

Boston - on the water?

As with a few other suggestions, this one is not directly on the water, but you could also take the T Inner Harbor Ferry from Long Wharf/Aquarium to Charlestown to visit the Navy Yard Bistro. It would be convenient if you had any ideas of visiting the Bunker Hill Monument or the USS Constitution. They have a nice outdoor patio too where you could catch a sea breeze.

Granted this isn't particularly close to the Theater District, but it would involve a pleasant and short ferry trip through the harbor.

Squash Blossoms

Drumlin Farms had them this past Saturday at the Union Square Market in Somerville. If last year was any guide they carried them for a few weeks and the woman told me this was the second week they had them on sale this year.

Is Hot Pot Buffet in Chinatown BYOB?

BYOB is illegal in any establishment in the City of Boston, so the short answer is no.

cedar planks for grilling salmon

Not to be facetious, but what about Home Depot or some other hardware place that would stock a lot of wood (un-treated of course)?

Curry Fries

The fries themselves aren't anything special, but the curry sauce at Old Magoun Saloon is excellent.

March openings and closings

The newly expanded version of Muqueca opened yesterday across the street, apparently with a beer and wine license in tow. I'm heading down there tonight to check it out...

Zeppole Countdown 2010

Sounds like you didn't get a very example of the style, which is unfortunate. My experience with zeppoles growing up are as a once a year treat (on St. Joe's day only) from our local Providence bakery (Mario's on Douglas Ave.), and I've never found anything in Boston that compares. For that matter I've never found a loaf of Italian bread that compares with Mario's either, but that may be more of a function of fond childhood memories than an objective comparison. I remember having a good zeppole from La Contessa in Davis, though it's a shame they are no longer around.

Anyone know if Royal Pastry on Cambridge St. does zeppole or have an opinion on it? I suppose I should just go by and see for myself considering it's just down the street.

February 2010 Openings and Closings

I noticed today that what I think is the dinner menu for Petit Robert prominently displayed on the front window of Felt. There is no other signage to indicate what exactly that means, but maybe it's reasonable to assume that PRB is taking over the restaurant functions in Felt? It seems a little odd to me.

borlotti or cranberry beans

While they don't always seem to have them in stock, Christina's Spice Shop in Inman Square carries them. Of course that doesn't come close to meeting your location criteria.

Charlestown Restaurants

I'd recommend either the the Navy Yard Bistro or Paolo's. Both places have a pleasant neighborhood feel and good, generally inexpensive food. Paolo's has solid if pretty traditional Italian and pizzas, and the Navy Yark Bistro covers the contemporary American genre well with an excellent and well selected wine list. Neither are particularly large restaurants if I remember correctly, so you'd probably want to call ahead to arrange for a table of 7.

I was disappointed with Olives on my couple of visits and definitely didn't think it was worth the money. We had a nightmare service experience at Tangerino and I don't remember the food being good enough to compensate for it either. Figs was always good, but it's a pretty low-key night in the neighborhood kind of place in my opinion.

Hope that helps!

Scungili in Boston?

I've never seen it in Boston, but then again, I've never really cared for it. There a wholesale company out of Rhode Island called Rome Packing that makes scungili salad and marinated scungili. I don't know what kind of business they do outside of RI, but you could give them a call and see if they have any customers up here. 401-228-7170

Bars in Inman and Central?

I'll second Green Street, but I've mainly enjoyed it as an after work, couple of cocktails, and a snack kind of place, not really as a later night bar scene. The quality of the cocktails and pricing is hard to beat though.

Also, Trina's Lounge on Beacon should be opening in the near future, providing a cocktail-centered place right in Inman. It'll have be a damn nice place to unseat the Druid as my go to bar in the neighborhood, however.

Boston farmers markets on Saturday?

Busses #86 and #91 run from Sullivan through Union Square. There is also the 87 bus from Lechmere Station (last stop on the Green Line) that'll get you there. If you do make it to Union Square, make it a point to get a loaf of bread form B&R and a fresh mozzarela ball from Fiore di Nonno. They are the first things I buy whenever I go to the market.

Chicken Fried Steak?

I saw chicken fried steak on the menu for one of their "Sunday Suppers" at Tupelo in Cambridge. I didn't try it, even though I am obsessed with it, because I felt compelled to try their fried chicken first (it was worth it). Therefore, I can't vouch for its quality or authenticity, other than to say that I've consistently been happy with my food from Tupelo. I'd suggest calling ahead to see if it'll be on their Sunday menu one of these days.

Fall 2009 Openings and Closings

Trina's website is up with their food and drink menu, for those that care. Being that it's a short stumble from my house to the Lounge, I'm eagerly awaiting its opening. The Abbey had its (rare) moments as a music venue, but I have a feeling I'll find this incarnation a much better addition to the neighborhood.

McKinnon's Meat

The Davis McKinnon's has been my go to spot for meat for many years now, mainly because of price, but I've never had any complaints about quality either. $30 can take you a very long way, especially if you stick closer to (unmarinated) poultry and pork items, and for that reason alone I am loyal. Their fish is also very reasonably priced and the quality has been pretty good, although I question whether it is truly "fresh" as opposed to defrosted and lord only knows about its origin. Lastly on the Davis location, as Pemma says, the steaks really are great. $5.99/lb for a ribeye you wouldn't be embarassed to serve to anyone? Done.

I have only been to the McKinnon's in Everett once. I traveled there to pick up a turkey I had supposedly ordered for a belated Thanksgiving celebration among friends, only to find out they did not have a fresh turkey as promised. The owner or manager or whomever it was that helped me called all around to their locations to try to locate one, and even when he couldn't gave me a great compensatory deal on a ham, which was delicious. I was impressed with the selection and the service, although I don't find myself in Everett ever so I've never been back.

Fresh Porcini Mushrooms

I have seen fresh porcinis at the Alewife Whole Foods a few times. I cannot confirm whether they are always available, since I don't look every time I'm there. The last time I saw them the price was $49.99/lb I believe.

Turkey Tips

Dom's is a good place to get turkey tips. They have them premarinated in a few flavors at a reasonable price if my memory serves me right. I bought the honey mustard a couple of weeks ago, grilled them up and boy were they tasty.

Suggestions for eating around Northeastern

Given your stated criteria, I second the suggestion of Brasserie Jo. It's a big, airy space, takes reservations, is usually not overly crowded, and I've always enjoyed the food (although I don't know if I've every personally strayed from the Parisian steak and frites). Plus it's only about a 10 minute walk from the main Quad at Northeastern towards downtown on Huntington.

No Lil Vinny's and Vinny's at Night (or On Broadway, or Broaway Walking at Night, whatever they'd like to call themselves) are different establishments, but both great homestyle Italian places.
