Mazza - Berkley, MI

I first ate at Mazza two weeks ago and have eaten there two more times so far. This week I'm going with two Indian friends who haven't tried it yet. Obviously, I like it! The decor has been transformed by replacing up the former brick front with windows that light up the place. The waiter thar served me is professional, relaxed and informative. When I asked for a recommendation, telling him what dishes I like, he came up with a good one. The lunch prices are reaonable - under $10 - especially given the quality of the chow. Mazza is spotlessly clean, a plus for me. The waiter even wipes the plates before putting them on the table; a nice touch, further evidence of the care.and professionalism. It is defintiely one of the best Indian restaurrants in the Metropolitan area and there are plenty of good ones.

Fresco Wood Oven Pizzeria - Rochester Hills, MI

If you look at the pizza picture on the Fresco's website, you'll be on your way to try one. It worked for me. It's some of the best pizza to be found, assuming this style of pizza appeals to you. I found the owner and the pizzaiolo to be friendly and eager to get customer feedback, in mycase, all complimentary.
Another local pie' worthy of note is served at New York City Pizza in Troy on the Southeast corner of Maple and Coolidge. This is New York pie, the kind you fold over, the way you'll find folks in the Big Apple eating it while walking down the street. Amr , the owner, knows what he's doing. Since opening a few months ago, he has improved the pizza, responding to customers' suggestions, reading books, articles, websites; everything he can find on the subject. Slices are always available.

Parboiling Baby Back Ribs???

I sure don't agrree with you on accordians. Any good 'que man should dig zydeco. Enough said on that subject. However, boiling ribs is blasphemy! If you don't have time to cook them, grill a hamburger or get a carryout. Do NOT ruin good meat! Back ribs can be grilled, longer time than a steak, but not necessary to smoke for hours.

BBQ BUFFALO RIBS

I AM LOOKING FOR A RECIPE FOR BBQ BUFFALO RIBS. I'M HAVING THROWDOWN ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND AND DON'T KNOW TO COOK THEM ON A GRILL.

Best Kielbasa in Detroit?

Are you by any chance referring to Wilks Market? Mr Wilk made the best, - both fresh and smoked. I asked if he would give me the recipe when he retired. He laughed and said that the recipe would go with him. Not even his sons could have it!

jalapeno gnocchi

I haven't tried it yet. I'll let you know when I do.

Cheap but yummy lunch place near Telegraph and Square Lake (metro Detroit)?

La Marsa on the NW quadrant of Woodward and Square Lake RD serves top notch Mid-Eastern food at reasonable prices. Request the lunch menu which is not offered unless you do. There is an Egyptian dish called Koshary, a mix of noodles.lentil and rice topped with fried onions served with two sauces. It's delicious, nutritious and inexpensive. Grilled salmon fattoush is another good choice. It's all good.

Brickyard BBQ, on Voorheis, serves a good 8 oz. pulled pork sandwich for about five bucks. They also have the hottest sauce known to man. It's like eating hot charcoal. Beware.

If you have time and like authentic Mexican food, there is a Mexican market on Dixie and Silver Bell Road called La Mexicana 3 (or 4) that has a lunch counter serving excellent tacos for about $1.50 as well as other food that is very inexpensive - a real bargain.

Hoggers, Berkley MI

What is the difference between smoked and pit bbq to you? ALL bbq, by definition, is cooked low and slow.

Hoggers, Berkley MI

Scott - I wouldn't call it awful, nor would I call it barbecue. I had a pulled pork sandwich. When I asked for plenty of bark, I was told that would be the hot sauce. Huh? The sauce had no heat whatsoever, but it did have hickory flavor which had to have come from a bottle. The meat was served already sauced. That's one of the reasons to serve/eat BBQ without sauce; you can tell if the meat has been smoked. The sandwich was tasty, but "commercial" or generic roast pork with sauce. NOT barbecue. The rib tips were not rib tips at all. I would guess that they were small strips of pork shoulder that were braised in the sauce. The cole slaw was too creamy for my taste. give me some vinegar and a little mustard and some pepper; something to kick it up and make it a foil for the barbecue, especially with the bland sauces that are served there. The Cajun rice was my favorite dish; although again too bland. A friend had a Cobb salad that was good. The crisp onion rings on the pulled pork were a nice touch. A plus is the friendly staff. Several people who weighed in on Yelp raved about Hoggers and seem to enjoy "barbecue" that is merely roasted meat with barbecue sauce. Ignorance is bliss. Given the loyal followers, I hope that they succeed and eventually go to the next level.

Irie Carribean Restaurant, Canton MI now closed.

Jamaica Jamaica is long gone.

Italian Hoagies in New Orleans

I've never been to Sarcone's, but in NOLA I'd head straight to Central Grocery for a Muffaletta, the city's best known "sub" aka Po' Boy. If your kid doesn't already know about this, he ain't much of a chowhound!

Gourmet Garden in Farmington, MI

Gourmet Garden has been sold to the folks who own Shangri-La at Maple and Orchard Lake in West Bloomfield. If the adage that the authenticy of an ethnic restaurant can be judged by the number of indigenous customers, Shangri-La is authentic. The dim sum served on weekends draws big crowds, as it should. With some 70 selections being passed, you'll find several to like.

jalapeno gnocchi

It was served with a roasted red pepper sauce. The gnocchi was stuffed with a jalapeno puree, I believe. It sounds as though you are on the right track. I would guess that the gnocchi "dough" was rolled flat: then covered with the puree and formed into a traditional gnocchi shape and cooked.

jalapeno gnocchi

I recently ate at Twist in Chicago where they served Jalapeno Gnocchi, one of the best things I ever ate - perfectly seasoned, melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi. I NEED the recipe. Help!

Tried Modern Food & Spirits in Keego Harbor, MI

My wife and I have eaten at Modern about 10 times. We have found the food to be excellent, the service friendly and efficient and the atmosphere pleasant on every occasion. Don't miss the soup sampler. The value is remarkable. Prices are always a few dollars less than we expect. The drinks are a generous pour and priced well below the $10+ that most restaurants of this caliber serve in Oakland County. The salads ore always fresh and tasty with homemade dressings. I can't say anything bad about the place. it's unfortunate that another writer had a bad experience there, but I suppose it can happen anywhere. I recently had Brunswick Stew, for the first time, at the Pig .n Chik in Atlanta. I loved it. Does anyone have a similar recipe?

beef stock

Can anyone recommend a good quality beef stock of beef base substitute for the real thing for use in soups and stews, etc.?

cranberry beans

A recent recipe in the NYT calls for shelled cranberry beans - presumably fresh - which I cannot find. Is there a good substitute?

Gourmet Garden in Farmington, MI

Gourmet Garden, in case you haven't tried it yet, is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area. They serve many vegetarian dishes. Try the pea shoots. Enjoy.

Livonia, MI: Cantoro Italian Market & Bakery

Cantoro's breads - my favorite is the ciabatta - and their selection of cheeses are excellent. They have every kind of pasta imaginable; some good Italian wines, reasonably priced, and - well, the list goes on and on; all things Italian. Mangia.

Paco's Tacos (Standish, MI)

Thanks a lot. It was Ton's Tacos that I meant. Sounds great. I'm there ASAP

Paco's Tacos (Standish, MI)

Has anyone chowed at Paco's Tacos in Standish, MI? I'm going from Detroit to Charlevoix in a couple of weeks mostly along I - 75. I'm looking for anything interesting; no fast-food.

tre vigne

Has anyone been to Tre Vigne in St. Helena lately? Since the departure on Michael Chiarello?

I heard a rumor that it is closed. What's the story?

La Shish in Farmington Hills reopening as La Marsa

I ate at the La Marsa at Square Lake and Woodward yesterday and today. It's some of the best Middle Eastern food around. The taboulli was fresh and crisp. The Deboned Chicken with lemon and oregano was delicious, served with grilled vegatables. A half order - $11.99 - was more than enough for two. An Egyptian dish called Koshary was fantastic: a mix of pasta, rice, lentils, chick peas and garlic tomato sauce topped with fried onions. A lunch portion at $5.99 is also enough for two. It is served with a choice of soup or salad and choice of grilled vegetables or french fries. Be sure to ask for a lunch menu if one is not offered. Good service and very clean place - probably my new favorite among many that are in the area, although Al Oumara on Maple and Farmington is right up there.

Chinese food in northwest Detroit suburbs

Check today's Free Press fo a comprehensive review. Sounds pretty good to me. If you try the dim sum, let me know. I wonder if it can stack up to Shangri La.

pizza dough in ann arbor?

Check Trader Joe's. They have pizza dough at their Farmington Hills store, probably in Ann Arbor too.

Detroit-- best corned beef or pastrami sandwich?

Al Famous Deli on Woodward about two blocks south of 14 Mile in Royal Oak is definitely in the running. Al Winkler has been in the deli business for at least twenty-five years and he knows it well. Both the corned beef and the pastrami are top notch.

Brothers' Ribs in Detroit--Jean's Sauce of the Islands

Joe - If you find someone who has the recipe, be sure to get the recipe for the Boogaloo sandwich that they served. I ate my first one while driving in a car with a white interior. It never looked or smelled tthe same.
