New Northern joint in Chinatown 2 (long review)
I finally went with 5 other people last night. We got the intestine dish, 3 chicken dishes (kung pao, one served in a cast iron pot over a burner, and the crispy chicken with lots of chilies), fish and cabbage soup, roasted duck with root beer (also served in a pot on a burner), shrimp won ton soup, hot & sour soup, spring rolls, and octopus balls. The spring rolls and octopus balls were both great. It was my first time trying octopus balls and they were crispy on the outside and nice and soft and gooey on the inside, and drizzled with a yummy brown sauce. The spring rolls came with a sauce that I initially thought was just your regular jarred sweet-and-sour but after a few bites I started to wonder if it was something else cause when eaten with the spring rolls it had some flavor that I couldn't put my finger on, definitely very yummy. The wonton and hot and sour soups were very good too.
I loved the intestine dish (I was the one that ordered it, only one other person tried it and she said it was good). It was really flavorful with some spices like maybe star anise, cinnamon, nutmeg? something along those lines. It had plenty of sauce, crunchy onion and bell pepper pieces and not too spicy. The waitress was surprised that I was ordering that, and when she asked if I was sure I reassured her that I've had it before and I love it.
Everyone else was happy with their dishes, I liked them as well, the only one I didn't try was the crispy chicken on a bed of chilies. The duck was my favourite out of the poultry dishes, it didn't have a distinct rootbeer flavor but was definitely delicious, if full of bones (which we were duly warned about). The kung pao chicken was suuuper tender, and the sauce was tasty enough.
The fish and cabbage soup was awesome, the fish was melt-in-your-mouth tender and the broth was so flavorful, it tasted of what I think might be szechuan peppers and lemon/lemongrass, and the cabbage was really good too, salty and spicy and flavorful. My dad took home the leftovers to my mom ($8 for a HUGE bowl) and she loved it too.
I can't wait to go back there again! I'll have to ask the waitress about some of the specials on the wall next time.

I love chicken feet! And that appetizer sounds good! I didn't get to go there last night finally but I have planned an outing with several friends on Sunday night. I'll post back about what we had.

After reading this, and having been meaning to go there for a while, I'm going there tonight! Thanks!
Nathan's Hot Dogs
I just spoke to the distributor 10 minutes ago... if I had seen your post before I would have asked him! You can ask him yourself though, just go on the Nathan's website under Contact Us at the bottom left and send an email to the branded product information address and they'll give you more info.
And they ARE available here, directly from the distributor in large quantities (for the time being till they come out in stores), I just bought some myself :D:D:D
Where to buy a whole pig at a good price?
Awesome! I've always dreamed of making my own lechon :) Thanks for the info!
Nathan's Hot Dogs
Good news! I spoke to a distributor and he says they'll be available with Metro Richelieu soon, he'd give me more info at the end of the week. I'll let you guys know!
What is Marché Ferdous??
I've been meaning to eat there since I saw it a few days ago. I stopped in and the smell of a wood coal grill made my mouth water when I opened the door, but I didn't have enough money that day so I only got some of the Syrian baklava in a box (which was really really good btw) and a piece of what I think was called "sweet cake" or something, individually wrapped squares displayed on the counter made with cornmeal, coconut, rosewater, etc. Also yummy but very sweet. I'll let you know what I think once I've eaten there.
There's a grocery section in the back as well as a display fridge with fresh meat packaged, and a bunch of bulk goods bins on the wall near the door.
Artisanal Bacon in Montreal
Yes I'd be curious to know as well who the other butcher is...

The double-smoked is amaaaaaaaaazing. Yes it's very smokey. Your kitchen smells like campfire while you're cooking it! That benton's old fasioned sounds amazing, I'll have to try making that too now!
When you buy the double-smoked, you can take the package to the front counter first and ask them to remove the skin and slice it for you, I always ask them to slice it thick and put the skin back in the package so I can use it for soups and stews, it has a LOT of smoke on it so it's great for flavoring stuff.
Chinatown 2
How accurate is that map now? I just moved to the area (I'm so excited! I can't believe it! I'm gonna bankrupt myself on cheap ethnic food...) and want to know the latest additions and recommendations for this neighborhood.
Oh, and not just Asian food, ANY cheap food (under $25/pers for a main). I've already been exploring and have a few places noted in my must-go-to list (the all-you-can-eat hotpot on st-mathieu, Le Milsa Brazilian Churrascaria on Bishop, Picks and the Marche Ferdous on St-Cat) but I wanna make sure I'm not missing anything, I'd like to eventually try them all.
Grumman 78 Food Court @ Faubourg
Awesome! I live a few blocks away from there so I'll have to try it sometime :)

I think you should try a few of the smoked meat places, just search for "smoked meat" on this board and you'll come up with at least one thread debating which ones are best.
Artisanal Bacon in Montreal
I was under the impression that they had both on offer all the time, I've often bought the "double-smoked" (I'm guessing the heavy smoked?) bacon which comes in whole pieces shrink-wrapped in the fridge to the left of the cash, as well as both kinds in larger pieces not wrapped on display in the case at the front, the "farmer's bacon" and I think the other was called "wood smoked"?
When I asked about the difference they explained that the "farmers" is hot-smoked and saltier, and the "wood smoked" was cold-smoked, and the "double" is both (obviously).
Unless the "double smoked" is not the heavy smoked from Boucherie Viau but from somewhere else...
Nathan's Hot Dogs
Yes retail here in Montreal if possible. I don't have a passport or the money to travel to NY! And thanks for the pointer to Green Spot, I've been there before but didn't know they had Nathan's. Hopefully they're cheaper than OJ. Ideally I'd like to find them available at a retail outlet though.
Nathan's Hot Dogs
Where can I buy them? My mother in law said she heard there was a place you can buy them from a store other than the Orange Julep, if anyone knows please tell me cause I had them for the first time today and I'm hooked! And if they're any cheaper any where else well that would be nice too :)
Best Chinese restaurant in Montreal
I'll second Lotus Bleu, definitely not north-americanized food. I loved it :) There's a thread about the place kicking around here somewhere if you search, I seem to remember a title that went something like "Life-affirming lamb noodle soup".
Best subs in Montreal?
Personally I liked Quiznos the few times I went there. I still prefer Dagwoods though.
Anything worth eating in Lasalle, Lachine or Dorval?
I'll definitely recommend Shish Poulet on Newman in LaSalle near corner... what was it, Schevchenko? for their chicken pitas. SO GOOD. I wish I still lived there...
Crawfish in Montreal???
Wow, I've only eaten crawfish once in my life, cooked and frozen from Ikea. We didn't even wait till they were completely thawed to eat them but they were delicious! They were tiny though. I'd love to do that myself but I bet it must have cost an arm and a leg, how much did it cost you total for the crawfish and shipping?

Thanks! I'll be moving to the corner of St-Marc & Maisonneuve in November so I'll definitely have to check that place out!
Hummus - Prepackaged / Grocery item
The Sabra brand was really good, but seems to have disappeared, a friend of mine said she looked for it in 3 or 4 different stores where they usually had it and there was none. Luckily the marche Akhavan on Sherbrooke is close to where I live, I'll have to try it there :)
Restaurant Closings in 2011
The Hotpot at 1017 Blvd St-Laurent is closed, I was in Chinatown two weeks ago and the sign was down, there was a new sign up for a sushi restaurant and the windows were painted over. Very sad, I loved the food there, we went there every week with friends last summer.
Kansui??
I ended up finding some at the Asian market on St-Denis near the corner of Jean Talon on my way to the Jean-Talon Market :)

Good places in Verdun?
I second the Lotus Bleu and Delices de l'Ile Maurice recommendations, I love them both!
