Alternative to Revere Ware Copper Bottom Pots?

I've given up on finding new Revere Ware copper bottom pots of the same quality as the ones I've had for 25 years (as a wedding present from my mom). I understand that anything you get new now called Revere Ware is made by someone else and is not the same as the older stuff.

QUESTION

Does anyone know of a line of cooking pots (for soups etc.) that is very high quality? I don't mind spending on the high end for a couple of really good pots.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Light & Crispy Paris-Style Baguettes in Toronto?

I was in Paris many years ago and LOVED the type of baguettes they had everywhere there - fluffy inside with a nice crispy crust.

Most of the baguettes I've had in Toronto are more like a long loaf of bread with heavy doughy bread inside. I like Ace baguettes but to me they really fall into the "loaf of bread" category.

QUESTION

Does anyone know where I can get "Paris style" baguettes in Toronto?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!

New Bakery in Leslieville

I just passed by the new Brick St. Bakery (like the one @ Distillery District) and they open in a few hours (Sat. Sept.15).

They are generally fairly pricey but some of their stuff is outstanding.

Whenever I'm going out of town to visit my Mom, I pick her up some of their Eccle Cake - exceptional !

SoupMan is back at Eaton Centre !

Everyone seems to focus ojn the prices @ the Soupman's place. My take is this - I am willing to pay for quality.

When I order a Big Mac combo with a muffin it costs me ~ $7.50. The other day I got the Soupman's soup meal (no drink) with an exceptional (and good sized) bowl of Beef Gumbo, Ace bread, an orange and small chocolate for $ 9.10.

That doesn't seem too out of line to me.

ALSO, I noticed that now that they have "re-opened" they seem to have more soups on any given day.

Johhny Cakes ?

Does anyone know of any Toronto-area restaurants that serve excellent Johnny Cakes (with corn meal) ?

I got really excited when I watched the Sopranos episode where one of the guys runs off to New England and orders Johnny Cakes every morning at a little diner.

I got a recipe off the internet and made it today. I loved them but my wife found them to be too "heavy" with the corn meal compared to the "fluffyness" of pancakes. I'm thinking a restaurant may have a more "fluffy" version.

Any help would be appreciated !!

Farmer's Markets in Scarborough

Someone mentioned woman named Nuala who sells pies etc. at a store close to the weekly market near Kingston Rd. and Warden.

I would appreciate it if anyone tell me:

(a) which store Nuala is located at on Kingston Road

(b) What days she is there.

I stopped by the block west of the Anglican Church today (Monday) but didn't see any sign of her - lots of empty stores on that block !

After seeing the movie "Waitress" I'm dying to get some good home-made pies !!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cajun Corner - Just Like Being in New Orleans!!!

For anyone who likes Cajun food, this place is tremendous!

It's a little "everything Cajun store" (in Leslieville on Queen @ Carlaw) with a takeout counter (and three little patio-type tables) at the back.

The food is great! The owners do a lot of catering and they have a standard regular menu - Shrimp Po-Boys (sort of cajun subs), Red Beans & Rice, Gumbo, Sweet potato frittes (very thin fried potatoes) etc. augmented by a great daily special.

The special is: (a) different every day, (b) comes in a large portion, (c) is only $6.95 and (d) is almost always excellent!

In the past couple of weeks, I've had Chicken, Veal & catfish smothered in great cajun sauces with rice and sometimes with various southern greens.

BONUS - The people at the store/restaurant are super friendly!

If you love southern food, do yourself a favour and try this place - it's a "hidden gem".

PS - I think their web site is cajuncorner.com and it has their weekly menu.

Italian Bakeries With Great Crusty Bread

Does anyone know of any Italian bakery with GREAT sliced crusty Italain bread?

I still pick up several loaves at an excellent Italain family bakery whenever I'm in Niagara Falls.

I've not been able to find a great place in Toronto but I can't believe it doesn't exist!

Thanks,
MajorSlick

Canadian Version of "Burgers to Eat Before You Die" ?

Someone mentioned Peter Luger's Steakhouse recently - it reminded me of a recent Oprah show that my wife showed me. One of the features on the show was an Esquire list of "Top 20 Burgers to Eat Before You Die" (list was easy to find with Google).

It was a really 'mouth-watering feature and my wife, my sister & I are now dying to go to some of these places when we are near any of them on future travel to the U.S.!!!!!!!!

QUESTION:

Does anyone know of any places in Toronto / Ontario / Canada that would belong on this type of list???

NOTE - The places featured in the Esquire U.S. list were seldom Lick's-type chain places but rather independent restaurants /steak houses in places like Hollywood Florida, Brooklyn, Santa Monica, suburban Detroit etc.

BTW - Peter Luger's was listed as # 2.
