Birthday dinner in Barcelona September 7

My husband and I just returned from Barcelona and had a fantastic lunch at Hisop. I would highly recommend - the food was great, the service was efficient and pleasant but not stuffy and we had a white priorat that was out of this world. You won't go wrong!

Where can I find mantecados in Seville?

In the Plaza del Cabildo, which is across from the cathedral, right of of Avenida de la Constitucion, is a place where you can buy convent cookies. They employ a lay person as a shop keeper, so there's no lazy susan, but what they sell is delicious!

Andalusia - tapas I should try

Hi Idyllwild,

For Seville:

Modern tapas:
1. My number one favorite place is La Bulla. We will go there at least twice during a one-week visit. The interior design is funky and modern and the menus are posted on chalkboards around the restaurant. It is a popular spot and there is usually a short wait to get in.
2. Zelai: order the mussels cappucino - it is the BEST.
3. Infanta - Excellent tapas.
4. La Azotea - also excellent tapas

Traditional tapas:
1. Enrique Becerra - excellent for a paella lunch
2. Giralda - my favorite dish is the flamenquines. Also the coquinas are out of this world
3. La Isla - a seafood wonderland. You can sit across from the seafood counter and watch the seafood guy work his magic. It is across the street from Infanta, for easy tapas hopping.
4. Las Teresas - solid traditional tapas, and it's a great old-school bar. It's located in the beautiful Santa Cruz neighborhood and you will most likely wind your way around those small streets and end up at it at some point.

Also, the rooftop bar at the EME hotel is great at night - perfect view of the cathedral and great drinks.

Jerez is sherry, so stock up if you can. Try a glass of Palo Cortado.

In Ronda, get the snails (caracoles) at Lechuguita.

Have fun!

Tickets vs. Cinc Sentits + other Barcelona restaurant questions

Hi estufarian, I just want to make sure I'm clear on the reservations for Tickets. I'm based in NY so if I wanted to make a reservation for May 1st, I should be online at 6:00 pm February 28th?

Trip to Madrid/Granada/Seville - Help!

Hi bumbles, I've spent a fair amount of time in Seville (my husband's family is from there), so hopefully I can steer you to the right spots!

Modern tapas:
1. My number one favorite place is La Bulla. We will go there at least twice during a one-week visit. It is not fancy - the interior design is funky and modern and the menus (modern-styled tapas) will be posted on chalkboards around the restaurant. It is a popular spot and there is usually a short wait to get in.
2. Zelai: order the mussels cappucino - it is the BEST. I've only gone for tapas and sat at the bar, but like most places, there is an area in the back for a nicer sit-down meal.
3. Infanta - Another place I've only gone for tapas and sat at the bar, but they also have a large area for a sit-down meal. Excellent tapas.
4. La Azotea - also excellent tapas

Traditional tapas:
1. Enrique Becerra - excellent for a paella lunch
2. Giralda - my favorite dish are the flamenquines.

A "fancy" meal could be had at Abades Triana. It is located on the river, across from Seville in the Triana neighborhood, so it provides a great view of the city during your meal.

Also, the rooftop bar at the EME hotel is great at night - perfect view of the cathedral and great drinks.

I can't tell you about Sunday - we're usually having a mom-made lunch at his parents' house! But, I do remember Zelai being open on a night when everything else seemed to be closed.
Have a great time!

Alternative to Tickets in BCN?

Do you know how far out you can book? I wasn't sure from the site.

80th Birthday Dinner for Parents

Thank you all for your suggestions! It sounds like the Fountain restaurant is the way to go, but my husband and I will hit up Vetri on a separate trip to Philly for sure (we live in Boston now)! Thank you again~

80th Birthday Dinner for Parents

My father will be celebrating his 80th birthday in the spring and my husband and I would like to treat my parents to dinner at a very nice restaurant in Phildelphia. We're looking for something that would be a truly memorable experience for them, that is definitely celebratory, with fine dining and excellent service. Le Bec Fin would have fit the bill perfectly, as they have lived in the Philadelphia area for many years and are very familiar with it as a one of "the" places for fine dining. I'm looking for suggestions that would be along similar lines...so nothing too trendy or loud. We understand that this won't be a "cheap date" :) and are happy to spend what we need. Thank you!

Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare

I don't know if I lucked out, but once I was able to get through I was able to get a reservation for 2 for the 7:45 pm seating on the Saturday of that week. We went just prior to them earning the third star, so not sure how/if that's affected the reservations process and demand (especially for Saturday nights).

Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare

It is worth the effort, and I can't stress that enough. A truly unique dining experience. When calling you have to be persistent - if I remember correctly, you can only call on Mondays, and I believe they start taking phone calls at 10 AM (double check all of that, as things may have changed since I made my reservation last fall). The line was busy from the minute the clock hit 10 AM and I had to keep redialing for 20 minutes before I finally got through. Good luck!

Graffit/Upper Westside

Highly recommend it! My boyfriend (who is from Seville) and I thoroughly enjoyed the dinner that we had at Graffit this past weekend. He vouched for the authenticity of the dishes and ingredients, as well as the restaurant's atmosphere, and he can't wait to go back to have another "home away from home" experience. We had entrees this time (all delicious), and will be heading back soon for an evening of tapas. The service could not have been better - everyone was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was full, and we're hoping that it will be a hit so that we can keep coming back!

Monday lunch in Paris

Thank you all! I know it's ambitious, and I was afraid of the chowhound "backlash" ha, ha, ha! But, these are great ideas to get the ball rolling...fish would be excellent, especially as my boyfriend is from Seville and eats seafood like it's going out of style! Also, Gosselin is close to our hotel and could be a good candidate for sandwiches. Thanks again!

Monday lunch in Paris

My boyfriend and I will be making an overnight trip to Paris from London in September, arriving on a Monday and leaving for Reims the next day. After researching on chowhound, we have made reservations for Michel Rostang on Monday evening, and will most likely go to Chez l'Ami Jean for lunch on Tuesday before heading to Reims. What are your thoughts and recommendations for lunch on Monday that won't overload us as we head into a culinary coma with MR and CAJ, as we definitely want to be able to enjoy and appreciate those meals?! We will be staying in the 1e arrondissement, but are happy to travel to wherever...thank you!

Black Truffle Oil vs. White Truffle Oil

I have a risotto recipe that calls for white truffle oil, but I only have black truffle oil; is this an acceptable substitute?

Pho Vietnam in Danbury

Bluu could work...these people are big sushi eaters! It looks pretty "clubby" from the website, but I assume that this is mostly just on Friday and Saturday nights? This is a group of scientists (from Yale and Manhattan) who are together for a 2-day meeting in Danbury, and the dinner would be on a Tuesday night. If it's too bar-like and louder at Bluu, it may not be conducive to conversation. Thanks for your help!

Pho Vietnam in Danbury

Thanks, BlueSoup. The food sounds great, but I don't think the rest will suit my group...have you had the Thai food at Bangkok? It looks like they could be a good fit for us.

Pho Vietnam in Danbury

Has anyone been to this restaurant and can provide a review? How was the food, the service, etc.? I am trying to find a restaurant in Danbury for a party of 30, and a good majority of my group is interested in this restaurant. But, I am hesitant to make reservations without having much info on the place, outside of their website.
Thanks for your help!

Where to eat near 51st Street?

Cafe Edison on 47th St...by no means fancy or fabulous. It's a New York diner, and not super expensive, with pretty much anything you want on the menu:

Rome trattoria that's open on Sundays?

My last night in Rome before I fly back to the states is a Sunday night. Can anyone recommend a great, authentic trattoria that will be open? I was looking at Augustarello, but not sure if they're open. Was also thinking about Ditirambo. Thanks!

Wine bar tour in Rome

I am looking for recommendations for a good wine/wine bar tour in Rome. I am traveling on my own, but would like to join a group in order to keep costs down. I am hoping to find something that is informative and will take you to a few wine bars, stopping at each for tastings and food. Thanks for your suggestions!
