Ellen DeGeneres Opening Vegan Restaurant -- ??
I'm just getting second hand info... Details are sketchy at best. I am under the impression the *old* Bokado used to be cnr Van Nuys & Ventura and is now close to Whitsett...
Ellen DeGeneres Opening Vegan Restaurant -- ??
Ah, apparently it's going to be in the Old Bokado spot cnr Van Nuys and Ventura Blvds.

Yes, thanks -- I was seeking info on *where* on Ventura Blvd, which of course is in the Valley.

ISO Rekorderlig Cider -- where to buy in LA?
Heading says it all - does anyone know where to find bottles of Rekorderlig Cider (Swedish) in LA?
Prefer close to Van Nuys / Sherman Oaks but am prepared to travel.
FYI -- I checked the Ikea site, but they only sell this brand - KOLSYRAD PÄRONDRYCK sparkling pear drink...
Thanks in advance, houndz!

Need help with relish recipe -- can I use a slow cooker?
ah, my microwave is way too small for this task. Gonna give the old crock pot a try today!
Help -- need 2pm lunch place today near(ish) Bev Hills to take visiting Belgian friend--
oh man, my guy & I shared that leftover duck shwarma wrap the next day and it was fantastic. Rich and tasty enough to satisfy us both for lunch.
Need help with relish recipe -- can I use a slow cooker?
anyone else wanna chime in?!
Need help with relish recipe -- can I use a slow cooker?
thank you -- you're right, I probably do need to experiment a little. I guess I hope I will recognise when it is the right consistency.

Hello houndz,
Last time I cooked my Uncle's fabulous Tomato & Onion relish, I burned it :(
His recipe calls for the following:
"Bring to boil and boil uncovered 75 - 80 mins, stirring frequently to prevent mixture from catching.
Cooking time is important: too little and it’s runny and yucky, too much and it’s a little dry. But err on the side of more cooking than less, but the max should be no more than 90 mins."
Well, the stuff is positively volcanic and difficult to stir, especially towards the end.
So, I am wondering if anyone has any experience with cooking relish -- or even jams or fruit preserves -- in a slow cooker and how long would I cook it for in order to gain the same result?!
Thanks in advance!

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
We went to Momed in the end and it was fantastic!
Avocado hummous!! We got the three dip platter -- that one plus a thick tzatziki and plain hummous - all were excellent.
Pillowy, freshly baked warm pita, one wholewheat, one white -- best I have ever had.
Duck shwarma with fig confit pita wrap -- insanely good and super flavorful.
Moma chips -- wonderful -- thin, soft and chewy with crispy edges. They come with garlic dip and ketchup you will likely ignore.
Too much for me to consume -- 3/4 of my wrap will serve for today's lunch :)

L'Ami Louis eviscerated by A. A. Gill in Vanity Fair
Jude, your comment rings true, other than "The French do not hate Americans" part... I am Australian and I speak French. I went to Paris once a year, every year for about 12 years and I never had poor service in Paris apart from when I was with an American.
Gill's review is witty and hilarious and not much of an exaggeration, by the sound of it.
I emphatically agree with you -- I don't know why anyone would pay through the nose for this clearly overrated, sub-standard restaurant experience when there are so many wonderful places to dine in Paris.

LOL! Thanks for these suggestions, guys!!

So far I've come up with Momed & Kiyono Sushi from searching this board.

Hi Houndz,
I don't know the places around Beverly Hills. We want to take him somewhere that shows off good Sthn Cali fare.
I'd quite like to go to Mas Malo Downtown, but my guy won't drive all that way for lunch...
Something different (and affordable) would be Daichan - Japanese soul food - in Studio City, but again, this is a bit of a drive...
I would love to take him to Eveleigh on Sunset but they only do (an excellent) brunch on the w/ends...
So, I'm looking for good Mexican, maybe sushi or sandwiches close enough to Bev Hills Hilton. Nothing too Euro.
Any suggestions would be most welcome -- thanks in advance.

Knife Sharpening - SGV/LB/LA/OC
This guy -- John Powers -- is superb. He hand sharpens your best cook's knives by hand (on a wheel) at a highly reasonable rates, e.g. about $6 for a 8"+ blade.
Scissors, pinking shears, garden tools, knives etc etc
He even sharpened my Japanese eyebrow tweezers and they actually work again. yay!
Sundays you can find him at the Studio City Farmer's Market (Laurel Place) until noon.

He also does pick up & delivery. You can drop off at his place in Studio City.
He's really thorough, so it can take a bit of time if you just do it at the markets.

Fantastic & entertainingly written review, Servorg. Brilliant.
Looking for dinner near--Studio City this Friday
LOL - I haven't been back since they re-opened a while back as an Austrian place. Is the cuisine any good?!

Mantee is good, but very quiet and strictly Armenian cuisine, which is kinda unusual but quite delicious, if you like that kind of thing. Park out back off the alley - everyone sits on the back patio. Service sometimes can be a bit slow ...
I adore Mezzomondo for good home-made pasta and Italian fare. I almost always get the ravioli with either sage butter sauce or pink sauce. He sometimes does a great lasagne. Affordable and always great. Just E of Whitsett, on Nth side of Ventura. Scope out street parking.

Tanqueray vs. Hendrick's Gin?
^ similar -- I just cottoned on to Hendricks this past Christmas and I really love it for G & Ts -- with some fresh cucumber slices instead of fresh lime juice (of which I used to like a lot in there - perhaps too much...)
No more Bombay Sapphire for me for the time being, altho Sapphire is way more affordable (less than half the cost) than Hendricks.
Case in point: TJs (Sthn Cali) is selling a 750ml bottle of Hendricks for about $25.
BevMo sells a 1.75 Litre bottle of Bombay Sapphire for around $30!
It's tough when you develop expensive tastes *sigh*
