Eel Pie

Where can I find the traditional pie and mash where the pie is stuffed with eel in London? I know most are stuffed with meat, but I'd like to try the original.

Thanks!

new secret shanghainese

Now that xiaolin's Taiwan cafe moved to the old Fuzhou cuisine spot nextdoor to Maxim's, a new Shanghainese spot has opened up!

They haven't bothered to take down the english sign "Taiwan cafe," but there's no Taiwanese food served here. The sign in chinese says 上海风味 which lets you know it's Shanghainese。 While the restaurant is small and modest dont be fooled, there is a professional, award winning chef working here from Shanghai!!!

They have all the staples, xiaolongbao, etc, etc, but also MANY fresh seafood dishes, vegetables, etc.

It's definitely worth a try for an authentic taste of Shanghai.

Sushi or Indian in North Dallas or Richardson tonight

I've been on a Chang Jing binge for a month or two now..... Try the BBQ special .. B1. It comes with double the panchan, a side of chap chae, bulgogi, soontofu, a grilled mackerel, gejang (spicy raw marinated crab).... the food covers the table and it can feed an army.

They also have good ddook boki (spicy rice cake) and a unqiue jajang myun... there are some secret panchans available, like soy marinated chili peppers slathered in fermented bean sauce, but they wont automatically give them to you.

Ooo and for North China.... cold kimchi noodle soup is calling out to me for the summer.

Gejang - Korean Raw Marinated Crab

Just had my first Gejang experience at Chang Jing. This was the spicy version. Unlike anything else. I think it has usurped ojingo-jeot as my favorite jeot dish! I am curious where else I can get this, particularly the "ganjang gejang" soy sauce version?

P.S. anyone know how safe this is to consume?

SSR - Southern Sudanese in Garland

Passed by this place in a shopping center next to Albertson.... serving "southern sudanese cuisine." Anyone been to this place? Is it new?

I know southern sudan is gaining independence in July 2011 ... so might be nice to try it.

African food in Dallas

Add Murphy's 2 to the list. All your Nigerian staples--fufu, egusi soup, Jollof rice, fish pepper soup, goat, stockfish, fish stew, etc etc... probably the best Nigerian I've had so far, but it looks like a 1980s strip club in there.

Best Chinese Seafood Restaurant

I linked to the menu. =] It's a totally different ballgame at night. More Hong Kong banquet style dining.

Best Chinese Seafood Restaurant

Kirin court's night-time menu (not dim sum) has good seafood... Whole steamed fish Hong Kong style, whole crabs, lobsters (i'd skip this though, they might slip you a fried one), all out of the tank. They also have the dried seafood dishes, a bit on the expensive side. Shark's fin, abalone, and sea cucumber. This is a Cantonese cuisine restaurant.

http://kirincourt.com/index-1.html

Also I like Royal Sichuan's whole fish dishes, there are many to choose from. The fish is better quality if ordered whole--in alot of the shui zhu yu or yu pian (sliced fish) dishes, you get a catfish esque fish. But the whole fish dishes are beautifully presented, Tilapia I think. I like the Golden Valley fish wish is a variant of the classic "boiled fish" but with a whole fish stuck in there--not everyone's cup of tea. The fish in hot bean paste and the fish with diced chilis is also good.

Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce in Dallas

Well, I know where you can get this... it's a simple dish, liang mian. Go to the Asian Food court on legacy. There is a Taiwanese restaurant next to the springroll cart called 本店,"ben dian." Sorry no English name. They have the dish you are looking for though.

Fuzhou Style Cuisine - Richardson

I am curious about a new joint that recently sprung up next door to Maxims boasting Fuzhou style cuisine. I havent gotten around to it, but I'd like to go. Has anyone been? I hear Fuzhou(fujian) cuisine is lighter in flavor than other regional cuisines, and there is a particular soup fetish.

Anyone?

Best-Looking Restaurants?

Discolored linoleum floors, dirty carpets, a tin roof, throw in some slot machines and a score of at least 70 from the health department. These things are beautiful in my eyes as long as the food is great.

Gopal Gujarati Food/Chaat

No... I know that Kijiweni Swahili, a damned good African restaurant, was there formerly....

Anyone know what happened to them?

What happened to....

The south American themed coffee joint you're talking about is probably Zaguan. Not bad for cachapa, arepa, pasteries, etc. Great coffee. Granted I've never had a cachapa anywhere else so I can't make any claims on Zaguan's authenticity.

Maxim's Chinese Hot Pot Buffet

Royal Sichuan does the traditional sichuan style mala hotpot. It is an off menu item--well, rather there is a secret chinese-only menu containing the meats/vegetables available for the hotpot. It is not a buffet per-se but you get a huge platter of raw ingredients to cook in the hotpot. Fish, pork, beef, shrimp, pork blood, noodles, spinach, cabbage, etc etc. Since I'm not Chinese and only speak broken mandarin I had to fight for months to get to have it. It is only available Monday-Thursday FYI.

Malaysian / Nyonya Style Cuisine

Had just about everything on the menu at this point... Blue Ginger garden has become a daily affair. I recommend dry fish with bean sprouts, it's a bit like portuguese bacalhau.

The place next door seems to be highly rated... I might hit that up next. What's with their website? It's identical to blue ginger gardens.

Malaysian / Nyonya Style Cuisine

Was there last night... every table was full and there was a line out the door. Looks as if this place is a success. I had the vegetable relish which was a bit like chinese pao cai, but heartier and with chopped peanuts... laksa again couldnt resist, roti canai, chili prawns, water spinach, pulled tea... will get that fish head next time, and there will be a next time soon.

Malaysian / Nyonya Style Cuisine

I was on my way to Pho Mac the other day in Plano when I noticed they had some new competition. A Malaysian restaurant that specializes in Nyonya cuisine (a Malay-Chinese hybrid) just opened recently - Blue Ginger Garden. I couldnt resist so I gave Pho mac the shaft and went in. I was happy to see they had curry Laksa on the menu so ordered it, along with some water spinach with shrimp paste and some flatbread.

It was pretty good so I thought I'd post here. This is my first experience with Laksa - they have three versions, each with different styles of noodles. I got option #3 which is egg noodles and vermecilli. The Laksa contained fish balls, chicken, shrimp, and interestingly a deep fried egg. The Laksa was very good and I'll probably be back.

Options are limited in Dallas for Malaysian if Im not mistaken (Secret recipe and one other), and this one is particularly unique since it is a regional variation. I'll link to their website below.

King's Spa and Sauna, K-Town

Dallas seems to be at the epicenter of the ethnic bath-house eating concept... dont get me wrong, I am referring to two spas/restaurants in the metroplex: Russian Banya and now King's Spa and Sauna. I was shocked when I saw the commercial for a Korean style spa megacomplex, so I investigated further and found that they have a food court full of Korean comfort food like kimchi ramyun and whole chicken soup. The spa itself is huge and boasts all kinds of amenities like a traditional chinese medicine infused steam room.

Maybe this experience is a little bit too on the "communal side," since there is a price to pay with your bibim gook soo; for example, stewing naked in a veritable hotpot full of fellow diners. But if you got enough soju in me, this might be one of those painfully memorable experiences in life.

Theres the link to their foodcourt specifically, but you should also take a look at the spa facilities.

Daldongnae

was very good. Their stewpots are huuuuuuuuuge. In a stew of cod I got a whole fish, with all the nasty bits accentuated, lots of fresh herbs, kimchi, tofu, roe sacks, etc. Comes out like sichuan hotpot with portable burner on the table. Good thing. It's enough food to feed 3 people. The Buddae Jiggae is interesting to say the least: spam, hotdogs, and ramen noodles. Yes, the 10 cent variety still in square form in the dish itself, but it worked. Also got kimchi pancake. At alot of places you order this and it's just a regular pajeon with an orange color, but this had enough kimchi inside of it to crunch.

The panchan was decent. Actually the classic kimchi offering was among the best and most flavorful I've had. Also got fish cake with oyster mushroom, spam hotdogs and chili, egg custard, dried fish in chili, salad, pickled raddish, greens, etc.

Will be going back.

Best ceviche in DFW?

Can I nominate the worst ceviche in Dallas?

The tuna ceviche at Iron cactus. It was a heap of tuna sliced thick, and hadnt been marinated adequately in citrus. Lots of meat but poor quality.

Wont be going back.

Daldongnae

Well I'll go check this place out nonetheless. I hope they have GeiJang (raw crabs) because that's a dish I've been wanting to try. The review says they have unusual korean dishes, and the Budae Jigae is definitely a good example.

Daldongnae

Has anyone been to Daldongnae Korean restaurant? I'm trying to find a new joint to frequent since the one I've been going to scored a failing 60 on their most recent health inspection.

I found a good review. Looks like they have the infamous army soup and other unusual dishes. Can anyone else vouch for this restaurant?
