Reflections of a regular visitor

Moved to NYC 4 years ago after living a block away from Kanella for 2 years. I've said on plenty of occasions since then, "If I could move one restaurant to NYC...."

What Craft Spirits Have Disappointed You?

JMF, have you tried their bitters (Basement Bitters)? I picked up a bottle of the Half Moon Gin on your recommendation and it's fantastic. Couldn't decide on the bitters though.

1943 Pizza Cafe-Greenport

Yeah, I agree. We were visiting Greenport for the long weekend and this was the food highlight of our trip. The rest of the food we had (1st and South, Salamander's) was pretty mediocre, but 1943 was outstanding.
Loved the setting too. Felt like someone's private garden party.

Costco Liquor Store- what to buy?

Your Costco sells High West?? Holy s**t. Where are you located??

How many Bittermen's drops in a dash?

Per Kindred Cocktails, it says:
One "dash" of bitters equivalent to the Bittermens dropper filled 1/4 of its length, or about 15-18 drops.

But 15-18 drops seems to be much less than 1/4 the dropper length.

Where to find Four Roses LESB in NYC area (when released)

Sounds like the new Four Roses Limited Edition Single Barrel is coming out in June. Having never tried it before, I'd love to get a bottle. I'm in the NYC suburbs (Westchester). Should I call stores to see if they're getting it in? Wait until it's released? Any stores that will definitely have it?

Finding the Right Use for Gran Classico Bitter & Cynar

Have you discovered Kindredcocktails.com yet? Or http://cocktailvirgin.blogspot.com/? Both allow you to search by ingredient.

Haven't used Gran Classico at all, but favorites with Cynar include (all are on kindred cocktails):
Colonel Carpano (if you have Carpano Antica): maybe my favorite drink of all time
Gin-Cin-Cyn: don't worry if you don't have Cinzano. It works great with other sweet vermouths. It's a negroni with Cynar instead of Campari.

Great liquor store - help me take advantage

Fantastic advice. I have Smith and Cross and Cocchi available at a nearby store so I went with the Ferrand Dry (I just ran out of Contreau) and the Vida Mezcal.

Unfortunately, they didn't have Bonal. They had an amaro I had never seen before - Varnelli Amaro Dell'Erborista - but it was $65/liter so I passed on it.

Is that mushrooms or chocolate truffles? Either way, sounds *interesting*.

Great liquor store - help me take advantage

This is a tough request, but I'm spending the weekend in Hudson, NY and stumbled upon Hudson Wine Merchants, which has a fantastic liquor selection. Tons of obscure stuff. So good that I got a little paralyzed by the selection.

My home bar is pretty good but if feels criminal not to take advantage of this place. Help me round out my bar with something that I might be missing. Versatility for cocktails or a great value sipper would be ideal and ideally something less than $50. Here's what I currently own:

Gin: Beefeater, Hayman's Old Tom, Bols Genever
Bourbon: Four Roses Single Barrel, EWSB, OGD 114
Rye: High West Rendezvous, Rittenhouse, WT101
Scotch: Ardbeg Uigedail
Rum: J Wray & Nephew, El Dorado 3, Barbancourt 5*, Depaz
Cognac: Ferrand Ambre
Tequila: Milagro Reposado
Amaro: Punt e Mes, Campari, Cynar, Averna, Aperol, Fernet Branca
Liqueurs: St. Germain, R&W Apricot, R&W Violette, Daron Calvados, Herbsaint, Green Chartreuse, Cherry Heering, Luxardo Maraschino, Benedictine

Long-forgotten cocktails

I actually made this again last night and it was fantastic. My creme de violette-loving wife said it was one of the best drinks she's ever had.
Mind if I put this on kindredcocktails.com with attribution to you? Feel free to say no.

Birthday Lunch Hudson NY

Rrems, what am I missing about Greens? I'm looking at their lunch menu (the "club menu"?) and seeing a pretty pedestrian menu with chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, burgers, and turkey clubs. The wine list seems to be mostly huge California wineries.
Seems incongruent with your description above. Maybe it's changed?

Hudson NY September 2013

Anything new or any updates since this was posted last August? Going for a weekend for the first time next week.
Thanks!

Fine Spirits in Westchester County?

Westchester Wine and Spirits in White Plains has the best craft spirits collection and prices I've seen in the area. Not sure how their boutique wine selection is, though.

Orlando - anything near Buena Vista Palace?

Coming to the Buena Vista Palace for a conference. Is there anything noteworthy for food/beer/wine/cocktails within walking distance?

Trying to get into rum...

I *love* Kindredcocktails. There are few things that are actually life-changing. His site is one of them. As my wife said "you've picked up a lot of hobbies in the time that I've known you. Cocktail making is by far the best one." Between the recommended brands list, discussion of individual spirit types, and often extensive reviews of individual recipes, Kindred is a daily visit for me. I only wish there was a mobile version of the site.
