Walters's Profile
Best Dinner Near or In Pike Place
Alexa, Matt's is certainly family friendly and a cut above the waterfront, tourist spots. Also recommended are 94 Stewart St. and Steelhead Diner.
Tacoma dinner/lunch recommendations
RJ, You have a good starter list. The tuna dish at Indochine is exceptional; Vuelve A La Vida is not to be missed. I would substitute Merende for the Pacific Grill. I also suggest the Southern Kitchen for lunch and Sapporo in Fife for lunch or dinner. (Exceptional sushi and don't miss their soft shell crab appetizer.) Asado in Sixth Avenue offers great steaks for dinner. (Happy hour at El Goucho is also offers some bargains these days.) Avoid the water front restaurants.
Your Single Greatest Meal
Bucca de San Antionio in Lucca, Italy was it for me. A very simple meal starting with perfectly executed sage cream pasta followed by fire roasted goat. Absolutely incredible in its simplicity and the perfection of both the ingredients and their preparation.
One Perfect Day in Seattle - Coffee, Lunch, Cocktails, Dinner...
Matt's for lunch, Quinn's for dinner. Enjoy our balmy weather!
Haggis (Sea)
Terrier, I did an extensive search a year or so ago and the Oregon resource was the only one I found. Bergeo could always follow the classic Haggis recipe:
Cook the Haggis with a large rock in boiling water for 45 minutes. When done, throw out the Haggis and eat the rock.
Need restaurant tips for solo dining in Seattle
Quinn's is a must. Also second Matt's at the Market, Palace Kitchen and Steelhead Diner. You are staying near the Kingfish Cafe which is a Seattle gem. I also suggest the upstairs bar at Maximillien's at the Market (same menu as the restaurant below) and Coastal Kitchen.
NEW YEAR'S DAY BREAKFAST
I like 13 Coins for breakfast because you don't have to order breakfast. You can have a steak dinner at 6:00 a.m. or a complete pasta meal as they serve their entire menu 24/7. The only problem is how much breakfast will cost you.
Third Annual Ultimate Seattle Restaurant Poll (2008)
Degrassroots, Thanks for doing this:
1. Harvest Vine
2. Matt's at the Market
3. Salumi
4. Il Terrazo Carmine
5. Palace Kitchen
Seattle For 1 Night
Both restaurants are within walking distance. (Unless it's absolutely pouring.) The mussels at Maximillien's are not to be missed.
Offal and Sausage in Seattle
NYPORK, For offal treated awfully nice, I suggest Harvest Vine. They offer blood sausage, chorizo, pork belly and some foie gras thrown in. All will delight you.
Additionally, Salumi offers pork cheek sandwiches one day a week at lunch. Call to confirm which day they are available. Both places are true Chowhound destinations.
Help With BA Italian Food
We were very impressed with Sette Bacco in the Recoleta. (We ate their twice during our visit. Also, don't miss Club647; while not Italian, their creative approach to food will wow you.)
Help Me Narrow My BA List
glsebs, We are flying out of BA today after a true Chowhound journey. Highly recommend 647 Club. Amazing food. Other posts knock La Cabera as "touristy" but when dining there we were surrounded by locals. (Order just one steak dinner for two and order no sides or salads; they provide multiple plates of side dishes.) Great steaks. Add to your list Sette Bacco (Aguero 2157, Recoleta) a true Chowhound destination. For drinks, the Million Bar--nothing quite like it. Enjoy a great food journey!
Where oh where chowhounds should we eat....
KFG, To wow your friends with seafood, go to Seven Stars Pepper in the International District. The Scezhuan Crab will provide a memorable dining and seafood experience.
One great meal in Seattle
DLG, Both suggestions are excellent. If you would like to enjoy food as you would experience in Italy, I suggest Il Terrazo Carmine. Great food, old-school professional service and a leisurely pace.
I need your opinions
PM, I would suggest Quinn's and, in the International District, Made-In-Kitchen. (Depending upon where your friend is from.) A personal favoriate is the upstairs bar at Maximillien's at the Market. Their Mussels are the best in Puget Sound.
Seafood Restaurant in Tacoma, WA
QE, Tacoma has come a long way in the last couple of years, but "fantastic seafood" hasn't been achieved yet. Short list: The Tuna offering at Indochine on Pacific Avenue (not University Place) is Chow-worthy. At Sapporo Japanese in Fife, their soft shell crab appetizer is excellent as is their Red Snapper dish (along with their sushi--a bargain compared to Seattle.) A more earthy suggestion is the Catfish Dinner at The Southern Kitchen. If you go, order the collard greens as a side. If you are over 65 and die your hair blue, consider Harbor Lights. While it's not great, you won't know the difference.
Seattle Area Bakeries
Carrie, Bakery Nouveau in West Seattle has fabulous bread and pastries. (The baker is from Paris where he won the Paris baking competition two year's ago.) Well worth seeking out.
Dahlia Lounge/Pink Door/Assiaggio/Wild Ginger!
Paula, You will really enjoy the Dahlia Lounge. Order any seafood dish and don't miss the donuts in a bag for dessert. The Pink Door is not about the food as much as it is about the experience. If you have ever wanted to be a character in a Toulouse Lautrec painting, this is the place for you. If, however, you are a fan of Thomas Kinkaide, you'll want to dine elsewhere. I second the vote on Harvest Vine. If you're a true Chowhound, order some of the more edgy dishes; you won't be disappointed. Wild Ginger gets panned a lot by local Chowhounds sometimes unfairly. I think you'd be better served--less commercially--in Seattle's International District. The Szechuan crab at Seven Stars Pepper Szechuan restaurant will provide you a memorable visit to Seattle.
good sushi in tacoma area?
Perk, Tacoma's sushi offerings are not quite as good as Seattle. Fujiya is a downtown tradition since 1984. In nearby Fife, Sapporo offers exceptionally affordable sushi served by the owner's family who will make you feel like a regular your first time. Neither offers anything exotic. If your friend wants to try something other than Japanese, I suggest Maxwell's as a very Chow-worthy destination.
Any recs for San Juan Island?
I second the recommendation for Duck Soup. (For dinner.) For lunch, the fish tacos at the Outrigger are exceptional.
Harvest Vine
Freida, Per Chowound's Mission statement: Zagat people go where they are told; Chowhounds find the best places on their own.
Harvest Vine
I think Harvest Vine appeals to a certain type of Chowhound. My friends who frequent Applebee's don't care for it. Those Hounds that like Made-In-Kitchen, Quinns, etc, love Harvest Vine. Fortunately there are enough Puget Sound destinations for the Applebee's crowd while Harvest Vine continues to be packed every night.
Walla Walla Onion Rings -- YOW!
I haven't been to Burgerville yet, but the onion rings at Maxwell's (upscale dining) in Tacoma are outstanding. (As is their French Onion soup.)
News about MATT'S IN THE MARKET (SEA)
Howard, Nancy did report this. It sounded like an amenable arrangement that everyone was happy with. Now, see if you can confirm the ugly, underground rumor that Shiro has secretly sold his restaurant.
Best Dinner in Tacoma
For Dinner The Primo Grill is very good. Lately, Maxwell's has been very, very impressive. (Sixth and St. Helens.) Breakfast: The Southern Kitchen at Sixth & Division. Lunch: The Pick Quik in Fife will win your heart.
Seattle Bars and cheap eats
Olivers has the best Martini in Seattle. Generally good snacks and a great atmosphere.
I am a beginner at this so please be kind.
Jefpen, Whiner's suggestions are excellent--especially the Italian wines. I would also suggest some wines from some of Washington State's smaller producers. (You may have to spend $5.00 more.) Watch for wines from McCrea Cellars, L`Ecole, Andrew Will, Owen Roe and Thurston Wolfe. McCrea Cellars' Viognier will light up your world.
What is the Secret to Miso Soup?
Hey Chowhounds, Every time I've tried to make simple Miso Soup is comes out tasting like dishwater. Anyone have some suggestions?
OKC
Sodagirl, Rarely would I recommend a hamburger place as a Chowhound destination but the Theta Burger at Johnnies is the best burger I have found in the entire U.S. Their onion rings are also world class. I crave both and have found nothing to compare anywhere else.
eats in Federal Way, Wa
Vttp, I second the Korean suggestions. If you're a true Chowhound, you'll have a great food experience. For sushi, humble Sapporo in Fife (just South of Federal Way) offers remarkably good sushi priced well below Seattle. (Their soft-shell crab appetizer is an amazing bargain as is their red snapper. Order the "dynamite roll" too.) 15 minutes South of Federal Way is Tacoma and I strongly suggest a visit to Maxwell's at Sixth and St. Helens. (Dinner only.) Currently the best Chowhound destination South of Seattle.
