Excellent Dinner at Max Downtown, Hartford (Kinda Long)

Trumbull Kitchen is also one of the Max's. It's on Trumbull St. in Hartford. It's a good place to take a group of people because the menu is varied. It's also a good place to go get a "small bite" if you are not in the mood for a big dinner.

Going to Goodspeed in East Haddam

I am going down Route 9 from West Hartford to East Haddam. I need a place to stop for lunch tomorrow. Any ideas?

Does anyone remember the Crown High Deli in downtown New Haven?

I don't remember that restaurant, but I do remember Whitey's on Whalley Ave. I was still a kid and I had my first pastrami on rye sandwich with melted swiss and Russian dressing there.. Hmmm. I.. wonder if there are any good delis left in that area.

What food find still haunts you - that you had once and haven't found since?

One time and one time only a very good restaurant in our town had a Julia Child's night. It was around the time that the movie "Julia" came out. All the food was prepared from Julia Child's recipes. One of the dishes on the menu was Julia's Beef Bourguignon . There was obviously a lot of car taken when this dish was made. It was the most delectable dish that I ever had.

Have you ever OD'd on a food? And if you did, did you ever recover?

One time I made Paul Prudhomme's barbeque shrimp. They were loaded with butter. I bought too many shrimp so I doubled the recipe. There were three of us and I cooked enough shrimp for 8. The shrimp were delicious and we ate as many as we could, but we could not finish them. So we walked around the block twice and then came back and finished them off.

Best Vietnamese restaurant in Hartford area

Thanks for your recommendations. I had heard about tPho 501 in East Hartford, but I have never tried it. Have you tried the Pho at Pho Boston in Hartford/West Hartford? I was wondering how it compares.

I have had those shrimp rolls at Vietnam in West Hartford, I think that they may be called spring rolls there. and I love them too. Is there anything else that you like there?

We love Vietnamese food, but have not tried many Vietnamese restaurants in the greater Hartford area. Which are your favorites?

Foodies coming to St. Petersburg, FL.. Help!

I have to choose the place. And it will be in St. Pete, not Tampa. Is there a Bern's in St. Pete?

Foodies coming to St. Petersburg, FL.. Help!

I have company coming to visit me in St. Pete. I am new to this area and haven't been to many restaurants. I know that they would like to take me out to dinner, but I don't know any restaurants that they would like. They have eaten in some great restaurants around the country, so I would like to take them to a good one in St. Pete. Since they will probably be paying for the meal, I would not like to take them to something that is outrageously expensive. Help, please help.

"Authentic" Sushi in CT for sushi snob friend?

Any ideas for large groups in/around Hartford?

Those are two great suggestions.

italian hero in hartford

This used to be good many years ago. I went there last week and ordered an eggplant grinder. It was not good.

Any ideas for large groups in/around Hartford?

It's a large cavernous place with a huge parking lot. It's right niext to A Dong, a huge Asian grocery store. It's specialty is Pho--a Vietnamese soup. But there are a lot of other Vietnamese items on the menu. It's not too far from the Bushnell.

disgusting, I know, but.....I need a jello "salad" recipe....

When I was a kid, my friend's mother made a jello salad that my dad and I loved. I still make it once in a while when my foodie friends aren't looking. It's orange jello with very finely sliced cabbage, shredded carrots, and mandarin oranges. Lately I've been enhancing the flavor of the orange jello with finely diced orange peel and a little orange juice. I've even substituted orange segments which are cut into small pieces for the mandarin oranges.

Restaurants in St. Pete

I was in St. Pete a couple of years ago. We loved the food at Red Mesa. The price was reasonable and the service was excellent.

Rhode Island Food

Ritacco's Market makes a really good sausage grinder. It's at 84 Oak Street, Westerly, RI 02891-1737. My friend used to buy their sausage and take it home to CT.

Rhode Island Food

Yum. I had the clams with pasta there too. And the dish was great!

Pasta Cosi

Today I went with some friends to Pasta Cosi in Branford. I was expecting to be wowed by their pastas. I had angel hair pasta puttanesca. The pasta tasted starchy, the sauce was salty and there was too much of it on the pasta. I was surprised that a place that specialized in pasta could make such an abominable dish. Is there a new chef there that doesn't know how to cook pasta?
My waiter did ask if the food was OK. I complained about the salt in the pasta and he returned it to the kitchen and got me a panini. The mozzarella and prociutto panini was OK, but the french fries that came with it (and with the sandwich of a friend) were soggy. Another friend had a pasta dish that was drowned in sauce.

What are your thoughts on this restaurant?

Places I wish were Good...in Hartford Area-CT

I agree. Why can't anybody in CT make a pastrami sandwich like the ones that you can get anywhere in the Big Apple.

I wish it were better

Ain't that the truth! Anytime someone says that he or she would like to go to a restaurant with a water view, I shudder. But you had a much more colorful way of saying the same thing.

Wethersfield Sunday evening

Thank you so much. Those all sound like good options. I'll check those out to see which are closest to our concert location.

Wethersfield Sunday evening

Are there any restaurants in Wethersfield that have good food at reasonable prices and are open on a Sunday evening? We would not be interested in sushi.

I wish it were better

The Grist Mill is in a beautiful location and has lovely views of the Farmington River. They have a fixed price menu for $20 which consists of a salad, an entree, and dessert. Last night I ordered the pasta with seafood in a tomato sauce. The pasta tasted like it had been cooked the day before. The sauce on it was good. But there were only a few shrimp, calamari, and mussels added to the sauce--skimpy by most standards. The salad was ice cold and the salad dressing on it had too much vinegar for the three of us. My two friends ordered the salmon. One of them said that it tasted a little fishy to begin with. We all had creme brule for dessert and it was excellentt. Our waiter was attentive, but I did not want to complain about the food because one of our friends had been there before and thought it was good. Perhaps it would be better to stick to the special entrees of the night. Our waiter listed them for us. It was a long list and he did not tell us (nor did we ask) for the price of each entree. I think it would be nice it they listed the special entrees and their prices on a piece of paper, so that we wouldn't have to have to have a photographic memory in order to remember all the details of each dish..

Connecticut Pizza

Al Forno, in the Old Saybrook/Westbrook area has great pizza. It is in a shopping center right next door to Benny's. I haven't been there in a year or two, but it was great when I was there in previous years. There were times when I thought that it was better than Pepe's in New Haven.

The baguettes at Hartford Baking Company on New Park Ave. in Hartford are even better than the ones at La Petite France. They have other breads also.

I've had the scones twice and they are the best that I've ever eaten. The coffee is delicious. And the bread is wonderful.
