Fresh Fresno chilis

I'm going to pickle them. Nice recipe in Nancy Silverton's new cookbook. Mozza.

Fresh Fresno chilis

Anyone know where I can purchase fresh red jalapeƱo chilis (aka Fresno chilis) in Brooklyn?

Coming back to SF after a two year absence

Tartine is definitely on my list. Last time I was in SF the line at Tartine was so long and the place so crowded that I didn't bother to go in. A friend on mine was there last month and emailed some pix of her breakfast sweets. Looked so good now I'll have to brave the crowds. Thanks for reminding me.

Coming back to SF after a two year absence

I'm really looking forward to my trip in early November. I've been to SF many times and always manage to discover new delicious places to eat thanks in part to the good folks on this board. My number one dining destination this time around is Mission Chinese. I also want to hit Roli Roti at the Saturday Farmers Market at the Ferry Building (totally hung up on the porchetta sandwich). Maybe a trip across the bridge to Chez Panisse, too. Dim sum at Yank Sing is also a favorite. But I'd like your input too since I'm always on the look out for a great new restaurant or two. No limits! Thanks.

Keitt Mangoes?

Saw some at Patel Bros in Jackson Heights on Wednesday. No Alphonso until end of April-early May.

Jackson Heights Indian Stores

Patel bros is huge and carries everything you mentioned in your post. Subzi Mandi is good too but the selection is not as extensive. I'd stick with Patel. Have fun!

Lunch in Williamsburg

I wound up having a lovely lunch at Aurora. Didn't take the prix fix. Had the sausage with cippollini onions and the ricotta ravioli with sage and brown butter. Oh, and a glass of Savuto. Nice.

Lunch in Williamsburg

Doesn't matter. I just want something delicious to eat. One parameter--no liver:-)

Lunch in Williamsburg

I'll be in that neighborhood tomorrow and would love some lunch recommendations. No, I don't want a burger at Peter Luger:-)

Buying paneer near Downtown Brooklyn/Park Slope?

Sorry that it is not Park Slope or downtown Brooklyn but the only place I've seen packaged and/or frozen paneer has been in this little Inidan grocery called Patel. It's on 4th Ave and around 54th Street. I guess that qualifies it as Sunset Park. It's the only place in Brooklyn where I've been able to find fresh curry leaves too.

Santa Fe and environs

Thank you, ninrn. I'm making a list!

Santa Fe and environs

Thanks for your help and suggestions. My trip will be all the richer for them.

Santa Fe and environs

Since I won't have a kitchen when I'm in Santa Fe I was thinking more along the lines of bringing home dried chilis, etc. Can do? Any suggestions for vendors on that front?

Santa Fe and environs

Thank you once again, finlero. I've been reading about the Sante Fe Farmers market. Any vendors there worth a visit?

Santa Fe and environs

Thanks for all those great links, finlero. I'm just a little confused about something. You mentioned el Rancho de Chimayo as part of a day trip but where is it?

Santa Fe and environs

I'll be visiting Santa Fe and the surrounding area in late April early May. This is my first trip to the area and I've been looking forward to it for years. I'd love some suggestions for great local specialties and/or just great food. Trying to avoid the Chamber of Commerce recommendations if you know what I mean. I'm looking for places where I can eat good solid 'authentic' (whatever that means) regional food without too many tourists around. We'll be taking day trips too so anything along the trail is also fair game for good things to eat. Thank you, fellow Chowhounds in the great Southwest.

Michael & Ping's?

The portions are small but that's Ok since the food is meh. Not cheap either. Better than any other Chinese place in the slope but that's not saying much. Too bad. I had high hopes.

Al di La Spaghetti Vongole recipe?

The recipe for al di la's spaghetti vongole is, in fact, in the New Brooklyn Cookbook. I tried it and it is true to the restaurant version. In other words, delicious.

Mussels in Brooklyn! Please....

Al di la in Park Slope has the most succulent mussels. I think they're Bouchot. They serve it with a thick slice of grilled garlicy bread underneath so the bread soaks up the juices but still stays a little crusty. So good.

Where to eat alone in Park Slope

I often eat alone on a Friday night at al di la. I'll have a salad and some pasta. I'm never made to feel that I'm taking up valuable real estate. But I do try and be conscious of time spent and not linger too long.

Taking Italian parents out to dinner tomorrow in Park Slope, my mom is a huge PITA

Get there early and take her to al di la. Certainly the best Italian food (Northern, not red sauce) around.

Want to do a regional Italian cuisine food hop -- but where?

For Northern Italian, specifically Venetian, try al di la trattoria in Park Slope. It's probably the best iteration of that region's cuisine in NYC and one of the best Italian restaurants in general.

What Brooklyn dinner experience (tomorrow night!) will persuade my wife to move there with me?

If you wife wants to live in Manhattan I'm thinking she's a woman who appreciates a more urbane, sophisticated environment (this might, of course, depend on where in Manhattan she'd like to settle). If food, location, general vibe, and a pleasing aesthetic is something that would woo her a way from the Big City I'd go with al di la. The food is, in my opinion, the best to be found in Brooklyn. Then there's the Park Slope factor--hip shops, beautiful architecture, trees, accessibility to Manhattan, great food shopping and other places to eat. And I haven't even mentioned Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum and The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens all in walking distance.I really don't think Vinegar Hill House would work for her. Or Buttermilk Channel for that matter. Both way to remote and isolated. But if it's really about the food I'll stand by al di la for an unsurpassed, memorable and perhaps mind-changing dinner

Going to wander in Jackson Heights and sample different Indian dishes / snacks. Suggestions?

Speaking of mangos...isn't almost Alphonse time?

Sripraphai Super Seriously Extra Spicy codeword

Same here Bob. I ask for spicy and I get spicy. No magic words necessary. I guess I look like I mean it too and they know me long enough to take me seriously. Great meal on Tuesday evening after a round of feh for a while.

Near the Jewish Museum for lunch

I'll be seeing the Man Ray exhibit at the Jewish Museum tomorrow. 5th Ave and 103 street. Any suggestions for more than just OK lunch? I know Mondays are a tough day but I'm open to persuasion.

Cafe Moutarde in Park Slope Closed

Moutard lives. It is really undergoing renovations.

Seeking hidden gem or little known food stores/specialty stores?

Take a look at Market opened by the owners (and right next door to) Mimi's Hummus. Nicely curated selection in a small space and brand new.

Rose Gray has died (River Cafe, London)

Long live the River Cafe and thank you Rose for some outstanding meals.

Sifton is from another planet (Tanoreen gets one star...where exactly did he eat?)

I can't for the life of me figure out how Sifton correlates his reviews with the star ratings. I agree with him and Pookipichu that the entrees are not as strong as the mezze. And Famdoc may be right about Tanoreen redefining Middle Eastern in NYC. (But I don't know if that means a two start rating is in order) I've been eating at Tanoreen for years and consequently my experience tells me that two stars would be a fair assessment of the overall experience. But how do you give one star to Purple Yam and one star to Tanoreen? For me, therein lies the mystery of Sam Sifton.
