where are the hot dogs???
Could be a lot of reasons but I wonder if the profit margin is just too low at the prices people are willing to pay for a hot dog--which they would be buying at the expense of a higher margin item.
Any recent reports on Effie's?
Yea don't get me wrong I love Kanella and have no interest in returning to Effie's... the food kind of sucked. And Kanella is a great price at lunch. However while the moussaka at Kannella is fantastic, it's also not the traditional American style you'd get at Effies or South St Souvlaki (which is where I'd rather go if I wanted that kind of moussaka on a Tuesday night).
Seeking Recommendation for Ramen (Japanese) in Philly
Only been at lunch and not in the past several weeks, seating wasn't hard to come by but might be at peak lunch hour. Parking is Center City... might get lucky with a street spot (meter) but otherwise there are plenty of garages, I think one just down the block and also one around the corner on Market St.
Any recent reports on Effie's?
The patio was very nice and also they had round tables, great for a medium sized group (we had 6). Inside was nothing special. It was a nice evening and nobody was sitting inside.
Any recent reports on Effie's?
I ended up going there. Deluca's assessment of bad to mediocre was accurate, closer to mediocre but if we hadn't shared dishes, it would have been a lot more disappointing. I don't get the people who say it's overpriced, the prices were moderate (most dishes under $20, and several sandwiches at $10-11), not a great price-to-quality ratio for the food itself but the patio is quite nice and the service was good and pleasant. Taking all that into account, not ordering any of the dishes over $20 (which I would imagine are probably a worse value), and accounting for BYOB, I think it was a fair price taken as an evening out, not purely chow.
The mediocre.. moussaka, chicken schwarma, Greek salad (nice big anchovies and hard boiled eggs, always a plus to me)
The bad... hummus, meatballs on mezze plate, Greek sausage dish
If going here, order a variety of plates and share, if everyone gets the dishes with tomatoes and rice on the side you will be very disappointed. Unfortunately most of the menu is made up of these dishes so get several apps to round things out.
Yes Kanella is much much better but it is also more expensive and the quarters are cramped. It's also much more elevated food. For this style of Greek food (moussaka, souvalki, etc) South Street Souvlaki is better, cheaper, and had bigger portions, but the atmosphere is not as nice, and not BYOB (though drinks are pretty cheap).
Confirming online reservations
What do you mean they demand that you call? They send an email asking for that? I've made many reservations online and I have never been asked to call the restaurant. However, they usually call me to confirm, which I understand. What restaurants are you talking about?
Kosher Shabbat dinner delivery
You didn't give location, though most delivery will do a good portion of the region I think.
Main Line Kosher Meats delivers and does Shabbat: http://www.mainlinekoshermeats.com/Shabbat-Menu-Dept/26/
Hamifgash delivers but I don't know if they do Shabbat: http://hamifgashkosherrestaurant.com/
You can also give Burger.org a call (their website is very out of date but they were doing holiday meals at one point): http://burgerorg.com/website/
Even if they don't deliver it may be close enough to pick up if you are in Center City -- they have a Center City location that isn't listed on the website.
There may be other options like some catering companies... you might have more luck on the Kosher board.
Heading back to Philadelphia, tweaking the agenda.
Thanks for the reviews as always. What do you mean by a "bait and switch" menu at a. kitchen?
Seeking Recommendation for Ramen (Japanese) in Philly
Nom Nom ramen on 18th St has been good.
Real Water Ice
Do you mean Center City Pretzel Co, the one on Washington Ave or Philadelphia Pretzel Factory, the chain? The latter is not hard to beat...
Any recent reports on Effie's?
Effie's greek restaurant on Pine... anyone been recently?
Real Water Ice
That reminds me--I also seem to remember hearing that one of the South Philly water ice shops bakes their own soft pretzels. Would love to know about that too.
I never liked water ice much but pretzels... there are still some good pretzels around but some truly awful ones, like the ones at Wawa and 7-11. Who eats those?!
Real Water Ice
Does Mancuso's make their own?
I know there are some other shops in deep South Philly, like below Snyder... I've heard of Pops and I think another one on Jackson or Ritner... anyone know about these places?
Kosher Mexican Cheese?
OP should try doing a 50/50 blend of the extra sharp Cabot with with regular Monterey Jack.
Kosher Mexican Cheese?
Yeah. Sounds like OP is going more of a Tex-Mex route, I think what he/she needs is a good sharp cheddar to mix with some of the jack cheese. Is the OU Cabot sharp?
KOSHER IN ATLANTIC CITY
Yea the windows and wall were painted with ORGANIC when they first opened (as organic, not kosher). My cynical side says they changed the menu but haven't changed the walls which might be why the counterperson said they were organic when the food may not be... honestly even before they went kosher, I had doubts that every ingredient they used was organic as claimed, due to the way the place was run. Just being cynical, maybe I'm wrong and they are in fact glatt and organic on South St but not the other locations. At this point the only straight answer may come from the mashgiach.
Stateside
Gives a whole new meaning to BYOB...
Major shortage of bread is common at these small plate restaurants. Considering how cheap bread is, you'd think a restaurateur would just make people happy by providing ample bread... I remember Amada and Tinto always being really stingy with the bread too and I always needed to order more--a lot more. I don't remember if they charged for the extra. On the other side of the coin, Parc and Dandelion load you up with basketfuls of their awesome bread, gratis.
Buckethead, how much bread was in the extra portion?
What's the Story with PJ Bernstein's
Hey I know people who would eat a HN dog off a treif grill but not on a dairy bun. *shrug*
What's the Story with PJ Bernstein's
Thanks for the into and history. Never been to CostCo and most of the regional brands predate my interest in kosher food if not my adulthood.
I didn't know about 5 Guys. Their website (both the national menu and the local order online menu) don't mention the hot dog vendor but I will stop in and ask if they are HN. Is that a nation-wide thing?
To answer my own question, here is an answer from the 5 Guys website:
We use Hebrew National hotdogs which are kosher. However, we've received feedback in the past from customers who said that although the hotdogs we use are kosher, the way we cook them and serve them is not. As a result, we didn't want to be misleading since we use buns that contain dairy and in most cases the dogs are cooked on the same grill as our burgers, therefore we decided to call them "kosher style". Our beef is not kosher.
Cooking on the same grill as the hamburger I expected but dairy in the bun is a problem.
KOSHER IN ATLANTIC CITY
The "new" one doesn't have any locations besides South St either, even though they've opened three more. I wouldn't trust anything on either site as being current. They're Facebook page is bare.
As a side rant, this kind of thing--inability to find reliable current information, menus, etc--is all too common with kosher restaurants.
As for PrettyPoodle's experience yesterday on South St--I would lean towards the employee answering her question being uninformed and that they are not organic. But maybe I'm wrong. The paper menu I have from Chestnut St says "Our meat does not contain any Antibiotic [sic], Artificial Ingredients and no Preservatives." Pretty clear that the meat is not organic, or they'd print it there.
Best tomato pies in Philly area?
Old thread but I just had Ianelli's yesterday at the Italian Market Festival, damn that is a good tomato pie.
KOSHER IN ATLANTIC CITY
Weird, the one on Chestnut is not... at least thats what they told me when I asked. Seems odd that they would source different meats for the different locations.
What's the Story with PJ Bernstein's
I know people who will eat dairy at non-kosher restaurants, and will also eat kosher meats (w/o dairy on the plate) at non-kosher restaurants. So it's not so weird to be interested in meat sourcing . Of course I've never seen any kosher meats besides Hebrew National hot dogs and salami anywhere treif.
Max and Davids food truck will be at Penns Landing SUNDAY!!!
Was Burger.org setup at the festival?

Did anyone get to try? How was it? Here was the menu:

Cheesesteaks at or within walking distance of Citizens Bank Park?
OP was driving to the stadium so that was my perspective--you need to factor in walking distance to the station itself (putting total over 1.3 mi), plus waiting and travel time. If starting at City Hall, the ideal route would be to hit John's via Snyder, then walk to Citizens Bank Park from there.
At least we agree on the important stuff--the sandwiches :)
Fish closing temporarily
Now Michael Klein is reporting that not only will they reopen, they will be expanding: http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/the-insider/Has-Fish-foundered.html
Cheesesteaks at or within walking distance of Citizens Bank Park?
Didnt even count that--makes the trip via subway even longer. It is definitely faster to walk to John's from the ballpark and just about the same distance on foot. If anyone were to undertake this, I'd say take Moyamensing east from 11th or 10th st but cut up to Snyder no farther east than 8th St--the area below Snyder gets sketchy at that point. Maybe 7th if it's early in the day (and youll get to walk by some interesting Cambodian businesses, restaurants, and groceries on 7th). Snyder itself isnt pretty between 9th and 4th Sts but it's not unsafe (though I'd avoid after dark if it's obvious you arent from around there).
Not that this has anything to do with chow... John's has fantastic cheesesteaks and roast pork, definitely a great suggestion. If youre driving, no reason you cant hit it up via car on the way in either.
