Four hour layover at ATL with teens

the Buford Hwy Foreign Food Shopping Zone and Buford Hwy Farmers Mkt

Having grown up on Skyland off Dresden, I watched them
clear the land and build Buford-Clairmont Mall. Used to
go out at night as a kid, when it was still safe to do so, and
climb onto the construction as it was going up. We would
get on top of the Woolco (where I worked at 16) and watch
the planes take off from PDK and sail over our heads.

Anyway, the Atlanta Farmers Market in what is now of
course Fiesta Mall, was originally a Winn-Dixie. But in
response to the original post, it is a pale comparison
to BHFM. I go in there only on occasion to grab some
peppers and stuff, but I go to Buford Highway at lease
twice a week to stock up on other items. I'll usually
cut over to Super H for meats and I'm good to go.

And yes, I think BHFM is as cool as they implied.
Also loved the part where he says Fat Matts is not
BBQ. Probably the most over hyped joint in Atlanta.
One of my ex girl friends called it Fat Matts Fat-o-rama.

Poutine

Gosh, and here I thought CHOW was a site about food.
You know, like have you ever had poutine?
If so did you eat it at home or out at a restuarant?
Where can I source local ingredients if I want to
try to make it?

Yeah, things like that.

Poutine

I've never tried it but I'm intrigued. Who's had it,
either at home or eating out? If I decide to make
it, where can you find cheese curds?

Authentic Mexican Food

I have not been, but I hear Taqueria Los Hermanos in
Tucker is the most authentic around. I eat a lot on
Buford Hwy and as a rule I don't care that much for
what it has to offer in terms of Mexican food.

Atlanta Restaurants - please help narrow down my list!

Have to disagree with thagoddess9, Mary Mac's is WAY over rated, Busy Bee's may be
good but not a great part of town. Skip Colonnade? Don't be crazy.

Indian Pickle

I think I have addressed this before, but not sure. Do any of you love
Lime Pickle? Or Mango Pickle or any of the intense pickles they serve
at Indian joints? I crave this stuff. At Bhojanic I love to get garlic naan
and smear is with pickle, add chicken 65 or Tikka Masala and eat it
like an Indian taco.

Indian Redux

Yeah, I've been eating mostly at Bhojanic but do hit the buffet at Bombay Cafe
as well. Ate a couple of times at Chinese Dhaba in the Patel Plaza. Kind of a
mix of Chinese and Indian. Good stuff but beware, it is damn spicy, which is
fine by me.

Can anyone recomend a great steak house in or near Atlanta?

Easy, Bone's, Chops, Kevin Rathbun, Hal's, Prime,
many more. For the really meatcentric, Fogo de Chao.

Good and interesting eats between Atlanta and Douglasville

Thanks guys for your replies. I was looking though for something in between the two
locales. I definitely do not want to eat in Douglasville where my sister lives and teaches.
And they are going to be tired and do not want to come into the city. So, anything of note
between the two?

Hatch Chiles

Well, couldn't find them online anywhere so I emailed John Kessler
and he put me in touch with Chuy's Mexican Restaurant over by Perimeter
Mall. Only for the next week or so.

Finding Schezuan peppercorn / Thai chili flakes in Atlanta metro?

Neel2004, just left BHFM and they definitely have them on aisle 28, bottom shelf in a
usable quantity. They are labeled prickly ash.

Fancy breakfast to impress (not brunch)

God, Shoney's. I the 60's and 70's there used to be one on Peachtree Road
in Brookhaven. It had the old drive-in in the back and you ordered by using
an intercom. When I was a kid, the Big Boy burger was the best burger in town.
They had the big fiber glass Big Boy in front and it was my favorite place to
go. It stood pretty much where they built Town Brookhaven.

Finding Schezuan peppercorn / Thai chili flakes in Atlanta metro?

Hey neel2004, I asked the board about the peppercorns back in May. Never did find
them based on the suggestions. However on day at BHFM I asked an Asian woman
shopping there if she could help and she didn't know what I was talking about either
until I mentioned they were also known as 'ma la'. She then directed me to one of
the Chinese aisles that had a bunch of dried spices. There was a bag on one of
the bottom shelves that she said was them Unfortunately it was a huge bag, one
that I could possibly never go through. Don't know the aisle but it was on the left side
about six or so down from the front. Hope that helps. She kind of looked at me funny
and asked what in the world I would want those for. I guess a long haired 50
something white male was surprising to her that I would eat those things.

Fish sauce and Kimchi and Indian pickle

The first time I ever smelled fish sauce I was grossed out. Today, I love it. I hear Red Boat is
the best but I have a hard time paying eight bucks for it at the Whole Foods in Buckhead (the
only place I have been able to find it). I just go to Nam Phoung and get extra to take home.

Kimchi is a lovely thing. I put together an intense snack plate of Kimchi, Indian pickle and
pickled habanero garlic cloves. Put a little of each on your spoon and pucker up. It's gonna
get hot in here.

Ethnic in ATL?

Go to Eat Buford Highway.com for a map of that area. I used to love Falafel Cafe but it is
quite a drive from 'Atlanta'. If you let us know what part of town you're staying in we can
probably be of more service.

Thanks Bob, I have always been a Mad Italian fan but the one on Savoy, at least the last time
I was there, was a dirty dump. The sandwich was fine, but the interior was ghastly.

Cheese Steaks?

Where are the best cheese steaks in Atlanta. I know about Roy's in Smyrna
but Smyrna is not Atlanta. I don't want to drive from Northlake area all the way
to Smyrna for a sandwich.
