Need couple of recs for drinks and apps on E Carson St (Pittsburgh)

It's funny that you would mention those places...If I had to list my five "go to" places on the Southside, that would be the list!

Next trip, you might consider a different area. I love the Southside, but it's mostly dive bars and kids...Not that there's anything wrong with that! But there are many other areas that might offer more of what interests you. We tend to frequent Shadyside or the North Shore. The Lawrenceville area is also fun, with some nice restaurants. While this is a fairly small city, there are a lot of other choices.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit. While Dish is my favorite, there are several other pretty good restaurants in the area, but they tend to be isolated, just like Dish is.

If you go to Piper's, the fish sandwich is tremendous! Not fine dining, but huge, deep fried delicious!

pittsburgh bachelor party food & drink

Southside has a lot of possibilities, but most are rather small and might sturggle with a group of 15. I would recommend Nakama, which is big, social, loud but very nice. A meal there and then drinks at any of the 100+ bars within walking distance might work.

Since you are staying in Station Square, make sure to stop in the Gandy Dancer which is the bar at the Grand Concourse Restaurant. The building is truly beautiful, and the Gandy Dancer has a great happy hour. For an app, try the Dynamite Scallops...Tremendous! Further down Carson street you have a ton of options. A little more up-scale would be Dish, which has a great comfortable bar and great food. Similar is the 17th Street Tavern. For a louder atmosphere and a ton of beers try Fat Heads. Huge, good sandwiches and lot's of craft brews. Carson City saloon is also a good stop. I won't even mention the "dive" bars...You'll find plenty of them! Hope you enjoy your visit!

Cure VS. Union Pig

It's been my intention to go to Union Pig since they opened, but I've been putting it off..Until I read what you wrote! I totally agree, this place is exceptional. It's not much on atmosphere, but the food quality and the great service more than makes up for that.

Coney Island Hot dogs in new castle?!?!? [Pgh]

Agreed. The folks on here are willing to share their constructive comments and recipes, and I appreciate it.

How is Toast! these days

I really like Toast, and my most recent visit within the past month was very good so I would still recommend it. That said, it's pretty pricey. There are so many other great new choices in Pittsburgh now, where you can get the same quality (or better) food at a better price, that I'd be temped to try something new.

Dinner with baby in Pittsburgh

The Church Brew Works, in Lawrenceville might be a great choice. I wouldn't call it kid friendly, but 7 months old isnt like a 4 year old running around. It's a very unique space with pretty good quality food, seating is spaced out and the place is loud enough that it shouldn't be a problem if you have a minor "eposide" or two!.

kid-friendly weekday lunch in Pittsburgh (& a dinner)

Please report back and fill us in on what you decided to do. I also agree that the Church Brew Works would be another good spot, and the food is quite good, not to mention the beautiful surroundings.

The North Side has a number of good choices. One that comes to mind is the Bettis Grille. While its sort of a sports bar, the food is pretty good and the atmosphere is good for kids.

A ramp (wild leek) trip!

Here is another ramp festival at Deep Creek Lake on April 28th. http://blogdeepcreek.com/ (you'll need to page down to near the bottom). Deep Creek is a beautiful area about 40 minutes East of Morgantown WV. and would be a nice stop on your trip.

A ramp (wild leek) trip!

You don't have to go all the way to Richmond. Here's a festival that's just South of Pittsburgh at the end of April. There are a lot of ramp festival's in SW Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia in April.

Pittsburgh - Wild Rosemary in the South Hills

Thanks for the great review. I've heard great things about this restaurant too, but haven't made it there yet. I'll be sure to get there now!

Best Mussels Southside

I agree, Fatheads is great at what they do best, which is good sandwiches and a nice beer selection. I didn't even know they served mussels.

Pastured Eggs

The farmers market at the Firehouse in the Strip District has them, although I don't remember how the prices are.

Panini nailed it for the S.S. Dish and 17th St are my favorites in that area.

One dinner in Pittsburgh

I prefer the bar at this restaurant, but get there as early as you can. They also take reservations for tables upstairs, but the bar is the way to go if your alone. You can watch them prepare the food from there and it's pretty entertaining.

Why do foodies like the McD's Filet o' Fish?

That's exactly right...Kind of like the other McDonalds classic, the McRib! I happen to love that sandwich!

http://burghfeeding.blogspot.com/

Are you a dessert person or not ?

I'm with you. I very seldom order dessert, but if I do it's usually something that's not overly sweet. Instead of chocolate, I prefer pie. Instead of frosted cake, I'll usually go for cheese cake. Sometimes when my S.O. orders a sweet, I confess to stealing a taste or two, but that's about all that I can really eat.

Accused of being too interested in food?

I agree. I'm accused of being too interested in food. And in football. And hockey. But it wasn't exactly a secret...

Why do foodies like the McD's Filet o' Fish?

While I admit that I like the taste of the Filet o' Fish, I'm not even sure if it's really fish. When I want a fried fish sandwich, I want one like this!: http://burghfeeding.blogspot.com/2012/02/pittsburgh-fish.html

Steakhouses - Stop asking me to cut into my steak as soon as it arrives!

I've been asked to cut into it many times and I'm not offended. I understand why they ask. If the steak has only been resting 3 minutes instead of 5, it's OK, I'm still going to enjoy my meal. I figure if that's what ruined your steak, you're in the wrong steakhouse.

Strange Pairings that Taste Uncommonly Good

This was easy for me. While most people like corn on the cob with butter and salt (as I do), I really like it with yellow mustard. Sounds strange, but ya gotta try it!

http://burghfeeding.blogspot.com/

Do you refrigerate fish sauce and does it need to be refrigerated?

I've never refirgerated my fish sauce, but for some reason I always refrigerate soy and other sauces. I'd like to know it it's really necessary.

Any memories of "poor people food" from your childhood that you still crave?

A wedge salad. Simply a wedge of iceburg lettuce with thousand island dressing. Not very nutritional, but still a comfort food to me.

http://burghfeeding.blogspot.com/

Has anybody done a "fish tasting"

I was going to recommend poaching until I read Wyogal's post. She's right on! Clearly raw is not an option with your selection limitations, but you might try to find a good quality fish market. The difference between fresh and frozen, at least when it comes to fish, is significant. If you are near a city you should be able to find fresh fish pretty easily.

Foods that unreasonably gross you out...

This is easy...LIVER! Yuk! My girlfriend really likes it, but if she orders it at a restaurant, I have a hard time sitting with her. I know it's silly, but I can't help it.

http://burghfeeding.blogspot.com/

Any decent places in Uniontown?

Thanks for the tips. Caileingl's looks perfect, great menu, nice place but not too fussy. Also, I think I know the tavern that you mentioned, although I can't remember the name. I do remember that it was never open in the afternoon when I've driven by.
