Peppadew peppers -- the best peppers ever? Peppadews are delicious and they make a great go-to party appetizer stuffed with goat cheese and honey or cream cheese. I think the best pepper ever is probably the piquillo (similar to a roasted red but with a smoky flavor) or maybe the Padron...both from Spain. I was at a restaurant that described a flatbread as having piquillos on top. When it arrived, those weren't piquillos, they were peppadews. Big, big difference. But needless to say, we didn't send it back. The peppadews were a great addition to the flatbread. |

Freezing green tomatoes question I don't have any issues with the skin on green tomatoes. I just used a bunch from my fall garden today. I cook up coarsely chopped onions, cilantro stems, garlic, coarsely chopped green tomatoes and pardon peppers from the garden with salt to taste. When it's getting soft and giving off juice I shut down the heat and when relatively cool I run it through my kitchenaid food grinder attachment. I add some fresh cilantro and a little lime juice. It makes a delicious salsa Verde type mixture. I put it in small silicone cups and pop in the freezer. When frozen I remove from silicon cups and store in zip locks in freezer. I add the frozen blocks to chili and posole during the winter. I don't miss the tomatillos at all. |

Yardley Ice House. I know Bucks county is the hinterlands to many people but yardley is a pretty town to walk in with a gelatti or water ice in hand. |

I want to blend my own chili powder (or is it chile powder?) What is the best source for buying a variety of dried peppers. Here in eastern PA, southwestern ingredients are a little lacking. |

Your tried and true Cook's illustrated Best recipes. My favorite from the CI New Best Recipes cookbook is Creme Caramel which is essentially a flan (my favorite dessert of all times). It is the lightest, creamiest version I have ever had and it gets rave reviews every time I serve it. I also love their apple crisp (or peach). |

What kind of friend doesn't share a recipe? Is she trying to win cooking competitions or get a patent on the potato salad ;) Anyway....I think pickle juice is the key and chopped up hard boiled eggs. |

Where are you getting your turkey? I've never heard of Griggstown Quail Farm which is not too far away from me in Bucks County. Thanks for the tip, Buckethead! I will be headed there in the near future. ----- |

Have You Seen Fresh Meyer Lemons Yet? My meyer lemon tree has about 10 on it right now...almost ripe and ready for enjoying. I don't live in San Diego. I live in Bucks county and have a dwarf in a large pot that I bring outside in the spring and leave out till around the first frost. I keep it inside all winter and enjoy the beautiful fragrance of the flowers. I have a very sunny kitchen addition with 4 skylights and windows on 3 sides so it works for me. I have had the tree for at least 5 years and people are blown away when they see those yellow lemons hanging from it. |

Where are you getting your turkey? I get mine at the Amish market in Newtown (bucks co). I would think any of the other area markets where the Amish bring in their goods would work too. |

What are some of your favorite make-ahead meals? I have been asked to provide a meal for someone who recently lost a family member. I thought about the standards like meatloaf, beef stew and baked ziti. But I think I would like to make something a little more unique. What are your favorites? If you can share the recipe or a link or even just a description of how you make it, I would really appreciate it. |

Authentic Green Chili recipes needed please We are in beautiful blue-sky Colorado for vacation this week and one of the first things I did was hit the Boulder farmers market and buy a few bags of roasted chiles. I am going to make a batch of pork green chili today. I will be using Petradish's recipe from a posts above. 2 T vegetable or corn oil In a heavy pot, heat 1 T oil. Brown pork on all sides, remove from pot and set aside. Add 1 T of oil to pot and heat. Whisk in flour and brown it a little until you've got a light coloured roux-add more oil if necessarily. Slowly whisk in chicken broth until thoroughly mixed. Add onion, garlic, chiles, tomato, cumin, oregano, s&p, and reserved pork. Bring to a boil, then partially cover pot, lower heat to a simmer and cook 1 1/2-2 hours or until pork is tender and sauce is the right strength and thickness-adding water or broth or reducing to correct. Taste for salt and pepper. |

Piquillo Peppers - Where to buy...not too far from Bucks county? Thanks. Maybe the Whole Foods in Princeton (which is closer for me) will have them too. I'm sure they won't the be bargain price of the TJs though. Nothing at Whole Foods ever is. |

Piquillo Peppers - Where to buy...not too far from Bucks county? To my horror, Trader Joes discontinued their delicious, well priced jars of piquillo peppers. Does anyone know another place where I can buy them in the Bucks/Mercer or even Montco area? None of the standard grocery stores in this area stock them...its Italian roasted red peppers or nothing around here. But they aren't the same! |

My husband and I ate there just a few weeks ago for the first time and were totally underwhelmed. For the price, the quality was quite average maybe even less than average. The service was pleasant and the atmosphere was very nice but that's the best I can say. If you want a decent steak for a reasonable price, I would go to JB Dawsons in Langhorne but I wouldn't drive all the way from central Jersey for it. |

Savor Saigon in Levittown is out of business.....!!!! My husband and I went there a couple times in the past few months and thought it was just closed because we went by on mondays. So about a week ago, we went again...purposely not on a monday and much to our horror it was closed. Nice owner, delicious food...a rare gem in lower bucks county. Does anyone know of another Pho/Vietnamese restaurant in Bucks or Mercer (NJ) counties? It is convenient that the H-mart is close by since I am now forced to get my Vietnamese fix at home. Fortunately, I got a great cookbook for Christmas...Pleasures of the Vietnam Table by Mai Pham. Highly recommended |

Bucks County - Newtown - Olive Oil and Vinegar on tap They are supposed to open Sept 7th. Looks like a nice space. |

I have had a Villaware for 5 years or so. I don't use it a lot but when I do it is wonderful. I would say the most important feature is the audible sound when the waffle is done. And of course...non stick surface. |

I found one for grilled stuffed polanos that I have made several times. It always gets rave reviews. I got it from the Egghead forum (Big Green Egg). The smoky flavors are probably what sets it over the top but I'm sure it would still be delicious using food cooked on gas or on a regular charcoal grill. I have also used pork chops in place of the chicken and Big Jim peppers in place of the poblanos. Both versions were wonderful. Chicken-Corn Stuffing 1 Roast and peel the chiles . Make a slit in the side of each chile and remove the seeds, but not the stems. Combine the stuffing ingredients thoroughly and stuff evenly into the chiles. 2. Preheat the oven or Egg to 350*F. Place the stuffed chiles in an ungreased baking dish, add a little water in the bottom of the dish, and back for 30 minutes. 3. Top the chiles with the remaining cheese and return them to the oven or Egg to melt the cheese, Serve with a dollop of salsa Salsa Fresca Makes 2 C Mix all the ingredients together and let stand a least half an hour befor serving. Use within 24 hours |

Montco or Bucks Local Ice Cream Check out Uncle Dave's at Shady Brook Farm in Yardley. Very good. We are always torn between that and the Yardley Ice house for Water Ice or Gelatis. |

Bucks County - Newtown - Olive Oil and Vinegar on tap Sounds interesting. When is this supposed to happen? Where on State Street will it be located? |

Continental Tavern in Yardley has a delicious burger. And they have a half priced burger deal on Monday nights. ----- |

Need PA-centric foods for my new book You may not be looking for help anymore since its been almost a year since the original post. But in Hazleton PA they have a kind of mozzarella they call scamutz. Its somewhere between fresh mozzarella and that rubbery stuff they sell in packages in the grocery stores. In Hazelton, its served mainly on pizza. It isn't as watery as fresh mozzarella so it melts better. |

Pizza in Conshy/Plymouth Meeting/Lafayette Hill Check out III Illiano's Pizza - 24 East Ridge Pike, Conshohocken, PA. Excellent |

Dinner between Jackson NJ and Yardley PA Thanks for the reply, jerseybill. If it was just my husband and me, we would go for it since we love BYOB and I have seen other positive recommendations for La Mezzaluna. But I believe the other couple likes a pre-dinner martini. Any other suggestions? It doesn't have to be in Princeton. |

Dinner between Jackson NJ and Yardley PA We are having dinner with some friends who live in Jackson, NJ in a few weeks. We were thinking of someplace in between there and where we live in Bucks County PA. It seems that Princeton is a good choice as far as location goes but I don't know anything about the area beyond Princeton toward Jackson. So far we are thinking Ratz in Hamilton or someplace in downtown princeton where we haven't been yet. So that eliminates Mediterra and Theresa's. Other places that are possible but probably too far for them are Hamilton Grill in Lambertville and Blue Bottle Cafe in Hopewell. We are looking for something nice - not too casual, not too stuffy. ...no real limits on types of food. Any suggestions are appreciated. |

There are several family members who don't like sweet potatoes. The ones that do, love this recipe. The ones that don't like it better than any other preparation. I guess that's saying something. I love them myself. On Epicurious from the now defunct Gourmet Mag (Don't even get me started on that subject!). Anyway, the recipe is from Bobby Flay before he became a mega star. Whipped Chipotle Sweet Potatoes (I also add a bit of spanish smoked paprika to the recipe which gives them another dimesion.) http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/foo... |
