What got you "into" wine?
It was an old boyfriend of mine and his father that inspired my interest in wine at the age of 22. Now it is travelling, food and wine tours and meeting amazing people that continue to inspire and pique my interest!
Restaurants I love, you hate
hahaha...I totally agree with you on the pie rage...but does it get love on here?
I love Swiss Chalet (aka The Dirty Bird) and I don't care who knows it!
Is there a bigger and better patio bar than The Madison?
We would get on great! My fave is also the Drake! Hemingways and Remy's are both pretty decent as well - but nothing matches the sheer size and debaucherous vibe of the Maddy!
Need suggestions for birthday dinner/drinks
I was at Julies a couple of months back...birthday dinner for a friend and there was 12 of us. The food was amazing and we hit the ossington strip afterwards, good times!
A friend recently had a GNO at Boehmer on ossington and said it was wonderful; definitely fits the "fun casual vibe" but no patio sadly.
Any new reviews of Mill St Brewpub?
I just recently moved to a loft in the Distillery so I go to Mill St a bunch...but it's not good. I am really hoping another pub opens up soon but it's unlikely. Even the beer...you have to like ales I think, and I'm definitely a lager beer lover (sigh).
Good spots in Toronto to eat alone
How about The Wine Bar, formerly JKWB, on Church just south of front. They have bar seating and tapas style menu...
40th bday dinner/all guys weekend in Toronto, suggested alternatives to steak houses?
Hi elliottl,
I've been to Tom Jones, not really a birthday party atmosphere, imo. I really think The Keg is great value, good atmosphere and the wine list is pretty decent. There is one on York and a new one on The Esplanade, both have the new updated modern look and are definitely not like the family Keg's you might find in the suburbs. Some other steak places in the city are Bardi's, and Harbour 60 - Jacobs is likely the most $$$$. The Fifth is a good alternative but I wouldn't say the atmosphere is what you're after at Crush.
Have fun!

Brassai Re-opening
Hi,
I went last Saturday night and it was definitely much much busier than my trips in the past. No reservations but my friend and I were seated right away. As for the menu, although I don't have the greatest memory, I thought not much changed. There is still a fish, steak, chicken, ravioli, oysters to start, the basics as before. I think they made a great move putting the bar up front and it should bring more people in, but as far as changes to the menu I would say it's fairly similar.
True Restaurant - Yorkville
Hi Dab,
I have been for both brunch and dinner. Actually this week for dinner. I really liked my beet salad and scallops (I went for 2 apps rather than a main)...had two glasses of red along with the apps and a creme brulee which was awesome! I think the bill was about $55 for me. But the place was e-m-p-t-y for the most part. When I went for brunch in the past it was totally hoppin'....hmm, it was a Tuesday night when I went for dinner, that could explain it. I would say try it out!
another year, another birthday, another meal!
I did not have a good experience at Union. Very poor snarky service and some uncooked chicken have, as they say, "left a bad taste in my mouth".
ISO: fried pork dumplings/Mu Shu Pork like those at Peter's Chung King RIP
Hi Bigtigger,
My very good friend is Peter's daughter. I sent her an email to inquire about your requests. Unfortunately she says as far as she knows the dumplings were one of a kind in the city and handmade...there isnt a similar facsimile in Toronto.
As for the moo shu pork she is going to ask her Dad tonight, I'll keep my fingers crossed!
Best of luck in your search!
Anything decent in area of Air Canada Center?
There is also a Keg on York st that is within walking distance and has a nicer atmosphere in my opinion.
Distillery District Restaurants choice advice?
I am with JPJ - Archeo is the best choice with kids, I have been to all 3 spots.
Restaurant/pub recommendation for 4 ladies
haha, fair enough! and here I thought it was just me and my youthful glow!
Chocolate candy for a diabetic?
Laura Secord has sugar free chocolates...I am diabetic and this is what my folks buy for me at Christmas / Easter. IMO its the best of what's available in Toronto. They have a variety as well. I think Peanut Butter + Chocolate, orange, maybe mint too. Give them a try.
Restaurant/pub recommendation for 4 ladies
haha, I somewhat agree with your take but think the age range is in the 25-35 crowd.
Uhockey reviews School Bakery and Cafe
Hilarious! I certainly laughed out loud at that comment!
Non-drinkers—what do you order?
Great topic! One of my biggest challenges as well - I am also diabetic so it rules out any juices or pop for the most part since usually the only diet soda is diet coke (at least where I'm from in Toronto). I've had to get creative with adding fruit to water (sparkling or flat) and really appreciate places that make their own "cold tea" not "iced tea" which tends to have a lot of sugar in it also.
Still water with ice and a lime wedge is my constant go-to beverage.
Lunch today around Bay/Dundas Area
Thanks so much for the replies. We ended up at Thai One On (thanks garfield) and it was great! Very nice and clean space and efficient service. Took your rec on the Basil Chicken, my former roommate was 1/2thai and made a killer basil chicken - this one can certainly compete! We split that and some veg pad thai and spring rolls - all delicious and fresh. Excellent lunch for only $20!
New place in Little Italy - NE Corner College and Grace - Marinella Simple Italian?
Yes, many many times! It is one of my favorite spots in the city; used to be beside the corned beef house on adelaide/widmer. Family owned + run; Marinella + her 2 sons are in the kitchen - I can't say enough good things about it! Make sure you have something with their Marinella sauce - heaven!

Lunch today around Bay/Dundas Area
Good Morning,
I'm having lunch with a friend that works in this area - do you have any favorites spots to reccommend? I'm open to any type of food including chains just nothing too greasy. Prefer west of Bay for expanded area - always looking to avoid Yonge st. during the week days.
Thanks!
Jaclyn
The Kitchen on Queen...anyone know what happened?
I used to go in a lot for sunday brunch and football games. I think it's simply a case of not enough business coming in - and from what the staff said at the time they were doing everything to get folks in; cheap drinks, djs, themes, you name it!
The bartender, Danny, is now at Czehoski and a while back the former manager Chris had moved to the Drake but I havent seen him there in some time so I'm not sure.
It's too bad really, I thought the food was pretty good and the staff made it a fun place to go.
Swatow: Are you kidding???
Haha, I have exactly the same experience at Swatow! Corn chowder is excellent at 3am!
Downtown Dinner Prix Fixe Menu up to $70 for TOMORROW!
I concur - when I've been there's a definite "awkward emptiness".
amuse bouche, kaji or nota bene?
In Amuse's defense, I have eaten there 2 times within the last year and have had nothing but great, friendly service (albiet somewhat lax on the descriptions of each plate), marvelous food and a grand all around time.
Urgent help! Three choices-help me choose
Definitely Sidecar - great atmosphere, good food and fantastic cocktails.
reds bistro????
I have been a bunch of times for business lunches + dinners. I'd agree that the wine selection is quite good. The food is ok - I find it slightly expensive for the quality but fine when you're dining on expense. Living downtown with the amount of selection of restaurants here I wouldnt pick Reds to spend my money on a meal, but certainly a nice glass of wine at the bar!
