Do you lie to your friend? Do you?

I feel that when someone invites you into their home and feeds you it is NEVER ok to insult what they have given you. It's just bad form and has been since Ancient times (see The Odyssey). But constructive criticism is different than an insult. If you have a close enough relationship with the host, and you know they won't be insulted by your "constructive criticism," go ahead.

"We can't be friends..."

Actually in MA the server minimum wage is $2.63, much less than half the state's minimum wage which is $8. I think you'd be hard pressed to name any place in Massachussetts where it's possible to survive on a wage of $5.26/hour. Most states have a server minum over $2, less than $3.

table service at Museo du Jamon...an upsell?

I remember walking by this place just about every day when I briefly lived in Madrid 6 years ago. The place looked to me like a tourist trap, and I never bothered to go in. This thread makes me have no regrets.

Gibraltarian cuisine - does it exist in restaurants anymore?

I'm so intrigued. I'll be spending some time in Gibraltar next year, but have never been and know nothing about the food. I certainly hope I get the opportunity to find out about all the dishes that you mention! Maybe you'll find answers on the UK board?

How Rare Do They Eat Chicken in Madrid?

No exaggeration, the best chicken I have ever had in my life I had in Madrid. Casa Mingo on Paseo Florida 34 (this was back in 2003 but am headed back in there in the fall, yes!). Lived in Madrid for a few months and regularly trekked an hour to wait in a long line to eat that chicken. It was never undercooked. It was always the same perfection. The place is both a machine and a storied Madrid institution and the sidra is fun. As I said I haven't been back since 2003 so I can't speak to what's going on in the Madrileño chicken scene these days.

I certainly don't blame your wife, rawish chicken is one thing I would never want to put in my mouth. But I did find that most of Madrid looks like a health hazard to American eyes. Cooked meats sit out on the bars all day without refrigeration, but I never let that hold me back and I've never heard of anyone encountering a problem, and I never did. I'm just glad the US has lightened up enough to let in those uncooked legs of pigs that adorn every Madrid bar worth eating in. Yummy!

Brooklyn BYOB

And another one bites the dust! El Almacen is BYOB no more. It's no B at all until they get a liquor license, so let's hope it's soon, because that steak is ridiculous. Shared the meat plate for two, two nights ago and woke up the next morning craving their steak and eggs.

Looks like Brooklyn's under attack: http://www.crainsnewyork.com/apps/pbc...

Scary stuff. This takes a lot of the fun out of going to new places. Letter-writing campaign anyone?
