Phien's Kitchen Changeover
Just read on YELP that Phien's Kitchen in Lowell has changed ownership as of last week
According to the poster, the new owner(s) plan on keeping the old menu and adding to it
Anyone been there since?
Indonesian market
Kam Man in Quincy always has fresh lemongrass, galanga and occasionally lime leaves
they had lime leaves a few weeks ago, but they were very dried out
a decent and reliable source for fresh lime leaves is www.importfood.com (best to freeze as soon as you get them)
I'm actually about to buy a kaffir lime tree from www.logees.com/Kaffir-Lime-Trees
dried kokum you might be able to find at a good Indian market like Waltham Indian Market, Patel Brothers or South Shore Indian Market in Braintree
Kam Man Mkt South Bay
"Kam Man Farmers Market" is what they're calling themselves (name on the building)
Kam Man Mkt South Bay
Was at the new Kam Man Farmers Market yesterday at 8:45 AM
an employee said they would be opening at 9
so I slipped in aroud 8:50 with a few workers and wandered around a bit before the manager politely asked me if I were a customer
told me they were having some "pricing issues" and wouldn't be opening until 12
really only got to browse through produce and meats and a few of the isles
produce not much different than before the change, much better selection overall at the Quincy locale, not a great selection of herbs here
the usual suspects in the meat case but did have fresh bull testicles
interesting selection of beef, pork and fish balls plus some others of varying shapes and textures sold loose
as already mentioned, a fair selection of Caribbean tonics and products including Auntie May's yellow pepper sauce from Barbados along with the more common Mantouk brand
only got a peek at the seafood section which looked brand new and sizeable but not set up yet (no fish out)
that's about all I got to see other than the parking lot being patched up
Orange Soda on tap?
Walmart on Falls Boulevard in Quincy near Kam Man has both the Mexican Coke and Mexican Fanta Orange in glass bottles for $.99/bottle + dep
no discounts for a case
Unpasteurized Apple Cider
taking the kids to Salem this Sunday and planning to stop at Verrill Farm in Concord for some unpasteurized cider on the way back
anyone had it lately?
does it age well :)
and would this be my best option traveling from Salem back to Brockton?
never been there myself and really don't want to go too far out of my way
also, anyone ever try Wilson farm in Lexington for unpasteurized cider
thanks

Montano Sardines in the boston providence area
oops, looks like I need to amend my prior post
It is San Sebastian brand Ming's carries
product is basically the same as your description and are fairly decent
they also carry one or two other brands that may or may not be Montaño
was just at Kam Man this morning and they also had the San Sebastian brand along with two others that weren't Montaño
hope this helps

Buying Portuguese wine in Fall River & New Bedford
Chaves Market in Fall River has a good selection of Portuguese 5 liter bottles (with a cork) that run around $17
I usually get the Adao 5 liter
they also have a modest selection of other Portuguese wines including Ports in 5ths
very reasonable prices overall

Dry Aged Prime Beef on the South Shore
I was at Venda on Federal Hill 2 weeks ago and they had dry aged prime rib roast
was $16/lb on special down from $18/lb, but they actually sold it to me for $14/lb
I got a 1 1/2 lb steak cut from it for around $22

Cat Hai Fish Sauce
was also looking for it a while back when I saw that episode
none to be found around here
Viet Huong Three Crabs seems to be the "go to" brand for viet style fish sauce
around here, anyway
prefer Tra Chang or Golden Boy for a Thai fish sauce
HELP: Bouakham Nam Sausage
I usually eat it raw with raw sliced garlic and thai bird chilis
prefer the smaller sized sausages texturally
never got sick off eating it raw

Ming Seafood in Wollaston
Went there on Thursday
nice little restaurant, open 9 AM - midnight, no liq. lic.
some interesting menu selections
salt and pepper frog
whole deep fried flounder with spicy sweet & sour sauce
lychee pork - deep-fried chunks of tender pork, sweet peppers, and cauliflower in a subtle-sweet lychee sauce
braised aged pork with preserved vegetables
fresh fried beef with tofu and black mushroom
10 spiced spareribs
succulent garlic snails
pan fried egg with blue crab
I ordered the country style beef stomach - cold slices of beef tripe stewed in soy and 5 spice served with sweet sauce on the side
and the sautéed fish noodles with shredded pork - fish flavored rice noodles with a small amount of shredded pork, scallion and napa cabbage
I'd give the country style beef stomach an "A" with just the right texture, good portion, presentation and balance of sweet and savory flavors
the sautéed fish noodles with shredded pork gets a "B"
while very tasty and well-prepared, the fishy taste of the noodles became increasingly more challenging as I continued to eat my way through this dish
service was excellent with a very friendly waitress who seemed delighted that I was interested in the restaurant's more esoteric offerings
overall with my limited introduction I give the place a solid B+ overall and look forward to returning
Ming Seafood in Wollaston
anyone ever try
Ming Seafood Restaurant
1 Brook Street
Wollaston 02170
(617) 328-2006
they opened in early 2009 and specialize in Fuzhou regional cuisine
heading there this weekend
was thinking of trying their braised aged pork with preserved vegetables
and maybe the country style marinade assorted mix of sliced beef, tripe, pork ears, chicken feet, and boiled eggs
salt and pepper frog sounds good too
here's an article on them

The Best South Shore Bar Pizza
I usually get my pizza at "The Cod" due to its proximity, but agree it's gone downhill over the years
I grew up in the 60s and 70s and it was usually the Brockton Cafe or Montello Gardens for my family with occasional trips to Town Spa, Jimmie's, Sandara Club or Tip Top
they were all excellent in those days
now they're all gone or worse as in the case of The Town Spa
never actually tried the Lynwood til last year
while decent, I would still give the edge, ever so slight, to "The Cod"
but to be honest, my tastes may have just become accustomed to an inferior product
i mourn the loss of those great pizzas of my youth
sadly, they are gone forever along with Waleeco bars the "old recipe" Suzie Q's

Sriracha
I actually find Huy Fong Sriracha to be one dimensional
and much prefer the Shark Brand from Sriracha
it comes in medium and strong varieties and can be found in many asian markets
especially those catering towards Thais
you can also get it at importfood.com which is an excellent online vendor
