NYC best ethnic breakfast ???
I think the best chilaquiles are actually at Boulangerie Lopez in the South Slope. You can get them red or green. Best breakfast anywhere.
Are there any old-time soda parlor/candy shops still around?
Was just at Eddies and while the ice cream was ok the place has seen better times, theyre really skating by. Havent been to Hinschs since they reopened but I always thought the classic old NY diner atmosphere was much more of a reason to go than the ice cream which I found average.
Try Anopoli Ice Cream Parlor in Bay Ridge
Nice Italian with tourists and a toddler?
Frankies Spuntino in Carroll Gardens would hit those requirements well.
Indian spices in Brooklyn
Went to Patel Grocery (4th ave 53/54), yesterday. What a great place, had everything you need and then some for proper Indian cooking. Really nice owners who can help identify everything.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Looking for a professional food/neighborhood tour guide
Absolute best tour Ive been on is the NY Beer and Brewery tour. They take you to breweries, beer gardens and specialty beer bars in Manhattan, Queens but primarily in Brooklyn. One of the stops is a great beer and food tasting. They also talk about the history of breweries in NY and take you to some old sites. I did it with a friend (thy do tours every saturday) but it would really work well for a group-and I beleieve they do by appointment tours-they take you in an air conditioned coach. http://tourguidesofnewyork.com/index.html

Best Brooklyn Pizza (or Must Eat Brooklyn Staples)!
As another writer mentioned, many of the best pizza places (as well as many very average pizza places) have become destinations with long waits. One exception is Giuseppinas (almost identical to Lucalis-opened by the owners brother), which both because its new and out of the way is still pretty accessible and I think better than the Frannys, Motorino, Robertas, Forcella personal artisinaal pie trend. Theyre on 6th ave and 20th st

Largest Pizza Pies in Brooklyn, NY (not slices)
I, for one, cant stand this trend towards personal size pizzas priced the same as ones to be shared Part of the fun of going out for pizza or ordering it in used to be the sharing. That being said, I agree with others-asides from the gimmick factor why do you need a XXL pie? Chances are since few would order it, no ones likely making consistently good ones.

Smorgasburg: What a Pretentious Rip Off.....
I agree that most of the vendors sell overpriced, small portion food. I think the real problem, though, is not with the vendors they have but with the vendors they don't. The existing vendors feel like restaurant folks at a street fair. As you say, theres a total lack of representation of real street food at real street food prices. I suspect if they was such diversity, the exisiting vendors would be pressured to offer a better priced offering. Absent that you have an event that caters to affluent, generally white customers. That may be representational of hipster williamsburg and brownstone brooklyn but not the borough as a whole.
Of course you dont have to buy anything there or even go. I went a couple of times but havent returned for the reasons you note.
