Best sauce cookbook recommendations

I'm nearing the end of my time in culinary school, and I am looking to start building my library of cookbook/food literature staples. Right now I'm looking for the best sauce cookbooks that are out there. Does anyone have any favorites/classics that they can recommend?

Also, any other books that you might want to recommend would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Parents 35th Anniversary Dinner - Philadelphia

Matyson looks beautiful, and BYO is a big plus. Now in regard to me confidently recommending this to my father...how are portion sizes? :]

Parents 35th Anniversary Dinner - Philadelphia

Good Morning Chowhounds -

My parents will be celebrating their 35th Wedding Anniversary this month, and my sister and I booked them a hotel in Philadelphia for the weekend after Thanksgiving to give them a mini weekend getaway. The hotel is on Locust & 13th - pretty much between Rittenhouse and Washington Square. (I want to mention that I am not too familiar with Philadelphia, nor are my parents.)

I would like to get some restaurant suggestions for them - dinner is my main concern, but perhaps a place for brunch as well.

As much as my mother enjoys a fine dining experience, my father is an Italian-American from Brooklyn and is not so much impressed with a restaurant that leaves him hungrier than when he arrived. We'll just say that my father likes a full meal... So I'd ultimately like to find a middle ground - if any. A byob may be too much to ask for also?

Thanks for any help you can give!

ah THANK YOU for the farmers market info! It's something that I have been trying to do much more often, but there's not many up near me. I try to make some meals for him to last him a few days whenever I visit, and anything that can help me avoid the oh so frequest trips to shoprite is fantastic. I plan on checking them out, thanks!

rusfirth3 - I did a search for a mount laurel thread before I posted, but maybe I missed the one you mentioned. Can you post the link?

I have a new area to explore since the boyf just moved down to Mount Laurel. The town seems nice, and I am hoping that the restaurant options are just as promising.

I'd love recommendations on all types of places, and if anyone knows of a great (but cheap enough for a casual weeknight dinner) sushi place in ML or the surrounding area, let me know! We definitely want to try a lot of places and explore the area. And if there's a pizzeria that is your fav, let me in on it :] (and I’ll be sure to give you my post-taste opinion, since I am particular with my pizza!)

Thanks!

Casual girls night out dinner in Ocean/Monmouth co.

Ya know, I didnt even think about that no shrimp thing going on on our table...and it's especially strange because one of our friends is notorious for always ordering a shrimp dish when we're out! (she was one of our chicken eaters this time). And since I've never really met a garlic sauce that I didnt like, I am certain that the Camarones al Ajilo will be my next meal at El Meson. Thanks RGR!

Thanks to all for the suggestions :] The little outing was actually tonight, and we let the birthday girl choose. I gave her a few options and she chose El Meson, and we all really enjoyed it.
I really never eat Mexican food, it's usually not even a cuisine I include in my thought process when deciding on a restaurant...but I discovered tonight that this is most likely because I had never eaten a decent Mexican meal. El Meson's menu is pretty much the basics when you think of Mexican fare, but those basics were some of the best I've had. That may not be saying much, since my exposure to Mexican dining is quite limited, but I enjoyed my evening thoroughly. I think it was really the meats in all of our dishes that really impressed me the most. Between the 5 of us, I was able to sample some chicken, pork, steak, and lamb, and each bite was incredibly juicy and flavorful. And that guacamole was delicious! I could have made a meal out of just the crispy chips and guac...and our margarita on the rocks :]
Overall a great night. Good food, good friends...I'm a happy lady.

I do like Avenue, but I think we're looking for something a little more casual and a bit less exepnsive...we are in a recession after all! :]

Atlantic Bar & Grill's menu online looks fantastic, can you give me an idea on the average prices? They are not listed on the site. Thanks!

With money very slowly being saved to send myself to culinary school, are there any books I can get to begin to learn techniques and become more hands-on than I am right now? Basics are always a smart place to start, I'd like to build as strong of a foundation of knowledge as I can on my own while I wait for my piggy bank to fill up :] I'd love to hear any and all suggestions!

Is there also a Bamboo Leaf in Howell on 9? I thought I remeber seeing it there... Also, I recall hearing some discussion about Bamboo Leaf (not sure which location, or perhaps both) changing owners and the food quality heading south a bit. Does anyone know anything about it?

Just checked out the websites for both Labrador Lounge and Langosta Lounge...they're definitely going to get a visit from me. Langosta Lounge did appeal to me a bit more, though. Great suggestions guys!

I've heard very good things about Drew's and El Meson. As for some of the others, I'm not sure if we're going to head over to Red Bank or Long Branch this time, but I'll add them to my list! Any Ocean county recs?

A small group of friends and I are looking for someplace fun and casual (not super casual) to have a little birthday/reunion dinner. We're all from the area, but so help me, I will try my damnedest to steer them away from a chain restaurant. (I'd like to actually ENJOY my meal!) I've done most of my recent dining in the Mercer County area, since the boyf lives there, so I'm out of touch with my local eateries. Throw some yummy suggestions at me! The five of us have diverse interests, so any type of cuisine will do. Some BYO suggestions would be great too. Thanks!

Kenji Fusion Asian Bistro (Hamilton, NJ)

Kenji is definitely our go-to restaurant in the Hamilton area. We've never walked in without being greeted with an enthusiastic smile, and the BYOB factor is a huge plus when you're not looking to break the bank on a casual night out.

We go primarily for their sushi, which is hard to beat in the immediate area. With a huge selection on their seemingly ever expanding sushi menu, we never get bored, and our favorites are always changing (which is super refreshing.) Their specialty rolls are creative and so delicious, but that doesn’t take anything away from the basics. It's easy to get deliciously carried away when ordering :]

As in love I am with the sushi, the entrees at Kenji have been hit or miss with me. Some I've loved (Crispy Seafood) and some missed the mark with me (a seafood Udon bowl that I cannot recall the name of, not surprisingly). This still won't keep me from trying others and finding some yummy gems.

Overall I'd definitely recommend Kenji if you are in the Hamilton area. We've had tons of great meals there, and I look forward to our next. Oh, and they have a diverse appetizer menu as well, so don’t miss that opportunity to find something fantastic! Enjoy!

When will Ichiumi (formerly known as Todai) open at Menlo Park Mall in Edison?

There is an Ichiumi (f.k.a. Todai) in NYC on E. 32nd. It's a huge buffet (stretches the length of a city block) and has an expansive selection of hot and cold items, as well as pretty decent sushi. I've only been there for lunch the times I've gone, so I can't yet comment on the dinner selection or if it differs from the lunch choices. I had heard that one was going to open in NJ and this one in Edison seems to be it. I'll definiately be checking it out to see how the two locations compare.

Scarpetta...intimate dining?

Is anyone aware if Scarpetta has any sections or booths that are good for smaller parties for a more intimate dining experience?

Or does the entire restaurant lend to that atmosphere?

ahh thank you for giving me an idea of the atmospheres at all my picks! Very very helpful. yes, right now I am strongly leaning toward Scarpetta. Babbo might be a little out of my price range once all is said and done.

Degustation is definitely on my list to try one day, and I do think it would be perfect for a birthday celebration. But I'm not feeling it for the anniversary dinner.

Right now, after reading this and a bunch of other threads, I am leaning towards the following:

Scarpetta
Lupa
Apizz
Crispo
Babbo

But what's really strange is, we never intended to have Italian haha! But I'm sure we'll enjoy anywhere we wind up.
SO out of those, please give your #1 choice, and maybe throw out an American cuisine choice.
