Driving from Phil to Pitt - where to eat lunch?

Two words: Mel's Ribs!

It's in Newry, PA and is hands down, the best BBQ I've had. Definitely not any healthier than McDonalds, but much tastier.

Romantic/Unique Spot - Philly for 1st Anni

The suggestions you've gotten sound great so far. I've never been to Matyson, but definitely want to try it soon. Little Fish is probably my favorite restaurant in Philly, but it is also now lots of folks' favorite, so it's tough to get a reservation. Southwark is an awesome place to get drinks before a nice dinner. I'd also recommend Ansill highly, which is a block away from Southwark. Also just wanted to mention that Fri/Sat/Sun is not that great.

Best place in Philly to take Dad

If my dad were visiting Philly, the first place I would take him would be Monk's. It's a fun, casual, tavern atmosphere (albeit crowded on weekend nights), has an extensive beer list and great food -- the mussels, burgers and charcuterie platter are standouts. A close second to Monk's would be Standard Tap, or perhaps Pub & Kitchen, as suggested. Have fun!

Lacroix at the Rittenhouse

I went to brunch there for my birthday last year and it was fabulous! There was a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar, raw bar/cold appetizers in the main dining room and you go directly into the kitchen for the hot dishes. The service and food were both excellent. Definitely a special occasion place I would say, but not to be missed.

Has anyone been to Coquette lately (2009)?

I had dinner there last weekend and the overall feeling was...meh...
On the plus side, there weren't very many people there and the server was very accommodating (moving us to a table indoors when it got chilly, for example) and the atmosphere was nice. The cheese board was decent and the entrees were definitely on the right track, but way too salty for my taste. We left thinking that it would be nice to go to sit at the bar and have some appetizers and a drink in a quiet place on a good people-watching corner, but not much more than that.

Really good brunch in or near center city - non-hotel

Parc would be a good choice for what you're looking for. I went there recently for breakfast and although I actually wanted to hate it (not a huge Stephen Starr fan), I enjoyed it. Sitting outside in nice weather would be ideal but it was also very nice inside, with good food and service.

Also, I've never been for brunch, but Cochon, a French BYO in Queen Village, also offers brunch on the weekends.

lobster roll

Though it's not exactly a lobster roll, I had a tasty "lobster BLT" at N. 3rd recently. It was a slice of toasted brioche, lobster salad, tomato, micro greens and 2 slices of bacon on top. It was a bit pricey for an appetizer portion, but I really enjoyed it.

mom's 50th birthday dinner

The tortilla espanola is a must. You may need more than one for the table:) Also try the machego skewers, and if there are meat eaters at the table, the seared lamb and mussels are great. Enjoy!

Vetri Details

Hey Chowhounders,

I'm going to Vetri this weekend and am very excited (albeit a bit nervous about the cost!) I was wondering a few things before the big night:
1) Is the wine pairing worth it for an extra $95 per person, or could a good bottle do? Do they have reasonably priced bottles? Any recommendations?
2) What is the appropriate attire? What kind of vibe is it?
3) Anything else I need to know? (basically looking for reassurance here that it is going to be an amazing meal and worth every penny!)

Thanks!
