Where do you get your hamburger buns?

im with jaykayyen all the way...ive never read anything about using english muffins on the bun threads...its the only way to go if you like crunchy exteriors..to be specific, Thomas' extra large!!!

Brief poem for the Promenade

me too, Kevin ...and by the way, down the hall from Benita;s resided the original Markie D.s cheesesteak joint which I helped open... Nosh, maybe you and I should open one on the P-Nade a la Big Mikes!! They sure could use one!

Mom's visit

im surprised Nosh didnt rec. Thai Boom on Venice e.of Overland...as Nosh knows, I went there last week on his and others rec on CH....great food(duck curry) and the best tom kha kai soup ive ever had...delicious broth,( coconut milk base w/ herbs and lemongrass,, chock full of shrimp and shrooms),..very reasonable prices, about 20% less than the avereage thai rest., and a lovely family and help that aims to please.
.
p,s, welcome to the board,.and while im on the subject of Nosh, please follow ALL of his recs.... he is money personified, particarly on the "value for dollar" category, his and my favorite category, such as pizza, cheesesteaks, burgers, burritos, and tacos, as well as thai, indian, middle east, etc., on the westside

Bad Experience at The Nook

Bad Experience at The Nook

6 nosh...by the way, i took 2 of your suggestions in the last few days, and they were both dynomite!! you and many others touted BIG MIKES for c.s.or hoagie, and i now can honestly say after 20 yrs of searching here, that IM FINALLY HOME IN SOUTH PHILLY!!!! BOTH THE C.S. AND ITALIAN SUB WERE SUPERB, ESP THE ROLL...this is the wrong post to detail it,but ill warranty the quality to any of my philly or ny friends

Bad Experience at The Nook

Ditto queequeg , lad1818, jdwdeville, and of course, my main man (or woman), nosh!!.. by the way, nosh ,i hope you join streetgourmetla, me and 20 others next tuesday at MC for a fiesta on centinela!!!

Seriously, i have eaten at the nook since it opened 4yrs ago, many many times, and brian has never been other than courteous, polite, kind, friendly,etc...i must admit, that in the beginning, in the first month or so, he seemed hassled, as any new owner would be, but he never was rude inattentive,or arrogant at all. I also admit that i have only had dinner there, so maybe the answer is to avoid lunch!!! or maybe he eats too many of his own peanuts in the morning!!!

Best Sandwich at Bay Cities?

totally concur, tho i get every sandwhich with the works, hot....i already had a stroke so i figure what the f!!! (i never in a million years thought youd catch me eating pastrami with anything except mustard or slaw and russian dressing, but BCs is money....go figure

Best cheesesteak

hoghoodoo, read my post on the first posting in servorgs reply to you above.. i did it today!!!

Best Sandwich at Bay Cities?

yes, they allow you to customize your sandwhich on the right side.of your order online...ive done it....if they dont allow this anymore, call and ask for hector and he will see that you can split your meatball. with sausage..of course its just as easy and better if you go the the hot counter and do this...the roll holds up much better this way

Anyone remember Mariscos Chente pre-LAT review?

i dont know where to start!!! first let me thank all of you for just being there....i am brand new to chowhound, and its like ive died and gone to heaven...im from philly, but i love good food, of all kinds, with value for dollar being my mantra...ive lived here for 20 yrs., but thanks to you guys, youve opened up a whole new world of gastromomy to me, and i will always be eternally grateful, particularly to my favorite peeps; gourmetinla, westsidegal, bulavinnaka, kevin, nosh, ciao bob, jeetjet (SINCE HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO MENTIONED THE WHITE HOUSE IN ATLANTIC CITY AS THE GOLD STANDARD OF CHEESESTEAKS WORLDWIDE!!!).. boy is he right, and ill elaborate another time...but i digress...back to the post at hand, on the marvels of MC which, thanks to you all, and thi n in particuar, i frequented for the first time last night!!!
first, i had a res at 630, and IT WAS TOTALLY EMPTY!! we were the only people eating for the rest of the night!! so as many of you have said, it looks like weeknights will be cool now that the huhah has died down a little ( in a way, i hate to give MC more good pub, but i tink all you chowhounds know about it by now)
second, as to content, ill just ditto everyones opinion of the food..it is UNBELIEVEABLE, from the ceviche to all of the shrimp dishes....kudos to maria, sergio, and the mariscos of mazatlan...i didnt want to write pages on this, because im not a great writher, and youall have done a much better job!!! BEWARE, HOWEVER, THAT ON THE SUBJECT OF CHEESESTEAKS,HOAGIES, AND BAY CITIES I WILL BE BACK!!!
thanks again for just being who you are, and keep on writing!!! JR

Best Sandwich at Bay Cities?

i have been eating at BC EVERY DAY FOR 10 YEARS!! Of course, being from Philly for most of my life, I have made a lifelong study of cheesesteaks, delis, and sandwich shops in this town and others. JEFFAND NAT, AND NOSH, you are right on the money with all of your comments, both positive and negative. I would only add that although going online was a godsend to us linewaiters, try going lite on the o and v if you do order online, because the oil and vinegar or dressing seeps into the roll if it sits on the rack too long, and you end up with the dreaded SOGGY ROLL
