Matyson or Kanella
I would have to say my vote goes to Kanella- overall I had a much more enjoyable experience there. But truthfully, you really can't go wrong with either place.
As for a red wine, have you ever tried Red Guitar? It's a nice mellow, cheap wine from Spain (I think they go for about $11-13/bottle)
Philly - Italian Market
I love Sabrina's!! I went there for lunch a week ago and had their Challah bread French toast w/ Strawberries and Bananas...yum!
My experience at Kanella...
I just came back from my first experience at Kanella and, just like most of other 'hounds on this board, I would like to sing its praises (LOL), but In addition to the food, I must say, that the wait staff is amazing! our waiter,John Sterling, was so friendly and only added bonus points to our already great experience!!
I went with a friend from school to catch up and we had the most wonderful time! We each started with an appetizer- she had the Dips of the day and I had the Thessalonici parcel. The dips were fabulous! I believe they were garlic, regular hummus, and something w/ olives- John did explain which each one was, but it was a bit noisy at the time and I couldn't hear everything.
My parcel was good, but I would say that I enjoyed the grilled veggies and peach probably a bit more than the actual pastry itself. i just felt like there was too much dough and not enough filling, but that might be just me...
For our main dish she had the Lamb and I had the pan seared-fish- I believe it was tiger lily?-served with beans, greens, and capers
Anyway, when the fish came out, it was a nice sized piece- and as soon as I placed a piece of the fish in my mouth, I could have died and been perfectly happy! It was so delicate it practically melted in my mouth!
The lamb was wonderful as well- however I am not the biggest fan of it, its a bit too gamey for my liking, but my friend had no complaints =)
I just wish that I could've saved some room for dessert-but I guess that is a goal for the next time I visit!
Dedicated Philly Chowhound Board
I am all for a Philly (and surrounding burbs) board! =)
final trip to philadelphia - narrow down 4 dinner options?
I say you definitely need to go to Matyson- I was just there, and it was a wonderful experience, plus their new tasting menu is all about lobster, which looks really good! =)
Ice cream spot in Cherry Hill or Moorestown areas?
*whew* I am glad to find out that I am not the only one who thinks that! I don't know what it is, but there is something about their Cookies and Cream milkshake that just hits the spot- it might be the whipped cream or the cherry on top--all I know is that it is so bad for you, it needs to be good! haha =)
after matyson?
PS- our waitress, Maris (sp?) was wonderful!!! She was so nice and attentive and had really great timing! I dislike how waiters/waitresses come around to ask how the food was AS SOON as you take a bite, so all you can really do is sorta smile and nod...
after matyson?
*sigh* I am in love and a believer now- I knew you guys wouldn't steer me in the wrong direction...Matyson was delicious! =)
We decided to go with the "Super Foods" Tasting Menu, since neither he nor I could make up our minds about what to get from the menu and every bite was like a little slice of heaven...
it started with the Jumbo Lump Crab Salad-and compared to other places that I have been, it actually contained crab!
The Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna was fabulous as well BUT my favorites for the night were hands down the Orange and Soy glazed Wild Copper River Salmon and the Moroccan Spiced Free Range Rack of Lamb....The salmon just fell apart and I don't think I ever ate anything that tasted like the lamb! The spices weren't overpowering but lingered in your mouth just enough to make you want to eat more and more until you look at the plate and it's all gone! (if you can't tell, that was kinda what happened to me LOL)
and of course dessert...I thought that I would be stuffed from all the food from before, but since the portions were small enough, I had plenty of room left for dessert (plus I wouldn't want anyone from here to be mad at me for skipping their desserts-hahaha)
So, we had the coconut creme pie and the peach and plum sorbet-Oh my! I don't really know what to say about them...it was hard enough to choose what to get -the pie was smooth like butter and the sorbet was the perfect finish to the night!
I did try to save some room for Capogiro, but by the time we left, I felt like I ate my weight in food and could not fit another molecule of food in my stomach if my life depended on it! I guess that means when I go into the city again today, I will just have to make a special stop for some gelato...=)
Since it was a nice night out, we ended up just sitting in Rittenhouse, people watching- but Tria, Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co., APO, and Tinto are all on the To-Do List
Thanks again for the help! =)
Ice cream spot in Cherry Hill or Moorestown areas?
There is also Big Dipper on Main st. in Marlton- I used to go there a lot when I was younger and I remember loving their ice cream!
Ice cream spot in Cherry Hill or Moorestown areas?
this might just be me, but I always thought that Chik-fil-A made some great milkshakes...
But I think everyone should try out Sundae's in Berlin (on rt. 73-near the old berlin circle) at least once in their lives. I know its probably a bit further than you would want to drive, but I love their water ice! For me, it tops Rita's any day of the week! and their water ice/ ice cream is homemade as well.
after matyson?
I, too, am in love with Capogiro...but I don't know if I could stomach 2 desserts...but it couldn't hurt to try! LOL... I am thinking a visit to Capogiro (if we can stomach it), then a walk to Rittenhouse (hopefully with no rain--to cancel out 1 dessert) and then a trip to Franklin Mortgage...I do love a well-made cocktail...=)
Thanks for all the tips!
after matyson?
Thanks for the ideas! Our main plan was to go to Rittenhouse, but I think it's supposed to rain tomorrow night.
I heard through the grapevine about Franklin Mortgage--didn't that place just open?
Tria is a definite possibility and probably where we are going to end up. =)

Hey all,
I could use your opinion...I am going to dinner on Thursday at Matyson and was wondering, what do you hounds do after dinner in that area? I was hoping to find a bar or just a chill place to hang out? I appreciate any suggestions.
ps- I am VERY excited about dinner, after all the good feedback from here!
Fun day trips in the area July 4 weekend?
what area are you referring to? (I am assuming Ambler, PA?) If you don't mind driving down, Philly is hosting the Sunoco's Welcome to America event and on the actual 4th of July, they are having the parade and also Party on the Parkway, and it's gonna have a 'kiddie section' with a moon bounce, and other fun stuff. It's gonna be crazy crowded, but should be fun! =)
Lunch in Voorhees
This might be a bit too casual for a business lunch, but I've always had pretty good experiences at Main Street Pub.
New stomping ground - Mount Laurel. Gimme some eats!
Imbgm, have you tried Joe's Peking Duck House in Marlton? it's a stone's throw away from King's Palace, and IMO, a lot better! and it's a bit further away, but on 70 in Cherry Hill, there's King of Pizza, near Taylor's- my dad swears by their pizza, but I haven't been there in a while...but I do remember I loved their Italian sausage pizza.
New stomping ground - Mount Laurel. Gimme some eats!
For pizza, I really like Sal's Pizzeria in Marlton-right off of 73 (near the circle) but I might be a bit biased since I have been going there for practically my whole life- their white pizza with broccoli and tomatoes is my favorite.
There's also Donkey's Place on Tomlinson Rd. in Medford. It's a bit out there in the woods, but they have really good cheese steaks that they put on kaiser rolls ( a weird choice of roll, but still really good) and I love their fries w/ seasoning. Plus, it's right next to Leo's Famous Yum Yum! (added bonus for dessert)
And there's Spaghetti House located in the shopping center off of 73 with the DSW and Champps- I love their Sicilian style sauce and the family that owns it is really nice!
Lanjeron Restaurant
Thanks! I will put this place on my 'to eat' list- it looks like everyone is leaning more towards french food...
Lanjeron Restaurant
Hey guys,
just wondering if anybody has been to this place in NE Philly? it's a fusion of French, Russian, Thailand, and Italian food...(personally- I don't think I would be that interested in it, but I am going with a group of people...so I must defer to their wishes...)
Help pick my birthday dinner... please.
i would say Amada, but a forewarning, I tried to book my birthday dinner there (it was on a Saturday night in April for 6 people) and the earliest seating they had was 9:30pm!!!!! so, if I were you, I would call asap for reservations....
ice cream/dairy stands and good italian ice
I'm kinda surprised that no one has posted Sundaes yet- it's located in Berlin (close to where the old circle used to be) and it has really good water ice- the best part about it are the pieces of fruit!- and I am pretty sure that everything is homemade. Its a small place with a drive thru- I highly recommend taking the time to step inside (all the lovely smells will be worth it!)
St. George's Greek Festival in Philly
oh, wow- Thanks so much for posting this! I have a craving for some good greek food, so this is perfect timing! I can't wait!!!
Gordon Ramsey in Philly?
I don't think he's in Philly anymore, from what I heard, he was in Fishtown at the Hot Potato Cafe (i think that's the name) shooting an episode for Kitchen Nightmares, but that wrapped up last week, well I know that the opening night of the newly renovated restaurant was last week. And from the other chowboard (mid-atlantic) he was supposedly in NJ filming an episode a couple weeks ago, so maybe he is still around? although I doubt it...
Cheeburger Cheeburger Coming to Flemington
my experiences with their burgers are so-so, but when i have a craving for onion rings (for some reason) theirs always seem to hit the spot!
restuarant at the borgata...
That's what I thought too Applecheeks! I could've sworn that they kept announcing the winner would be 'executive chef ' at the new restaurant in the Borgata...oh well, at least he gained a lot of face time from the show...
Thai Basil in Collingswood- very good
Thanks for the tip, I have been driving to Philly to get some good Thai food, only because the Asian restaurants I have tried are just bleh...this place is definitely on my list to try!
Crawdaddy's in West Chester
=) my response made sense to me at the time...haha!
Anyway, I was agreeing with supersharpie (talking about Crawdaddy's) but the next time I am able to get out to West Chester (sometime soon- I now have a craving for Cajun food, thanks to this post ), I think I will be trying Cajun Kates. it will be good to have something to compare Crawdaddy's with!
Crawdaddy's in West Chester
I completely agree! My friend introduced me to the delicious blackened crawfish poboy (i've only had lunch there)...mmmm....but it looks like I might be making a trip to west chester soon! =)
restuarant at the borgata...
Does anyone know when Specchio is going to reopen? about the same time as Fornelletto maybe?
restuarant at the borgata...
Thanks for your help, I just remembered (with help from friends) that it was Ombra, but I can't wait till I can get down to AC to try out Fornelletto!
