Very Promising Korean-Chinese Noodle House
My mistake , something in a earlier post made me think of this place.
Nicole , the dish you had sound like wool myun. A thick noodle with vegetable and a thick cornstarch gravy. It is supposed to be bland.
Chinese- korean cuisine is Chinese food for koreans. Like a lot of American -chinese food the cuisine is not very authentic to any region in China.
There is two noodle dish everyone seemed to order . Jajamyung - a brown hoisin sauce with minced pork and onion. its ultimate comfort food . Either you get it or don't. The other dish is Champong -a seafood spicy broth noodle. Most of the menu has variations of extra -spicy or more seafood etc.
Banchan is minimal and Kimchee and Daikon is offered to satify Koreans need for having Kimchi on every meal.

Chinese House

the Ribeye at Peter Luger
I actually had the ribeye at PL last year but for the life of me cannot remember anything about it except i wish i ordered the porterhouse. I think it was fine but just not memorable like the porterhouse.
Ethiopian - Park Slope/4th Ave??
I just had dinner there tonight ,rally good i loved the appetizer.I had the Kitfo tiklili- beef tartar in berbere seasoning .i loved it if it had a bit of heat it would have been perfect. also Sambusa was very good. I had an assortment of dishes and was very tasty I usually go to Awash the food is a bit different from Awash but the Ghenet is so good.I am already planning to go with friends next week .Service was good but a bit slow in re-filling the water and the decor is very stylish.
Absurdly small tortillas at Palo Santo
Can you clarify about the tortillas at Palo Santo? Was it part of an appetizer with a filling ?Was it an entree ?Please elaborate -I had a fish taco appetizer a month ago which i enjoyed and would like to know what changes has been going on. What made the tortilla dish annoying?
Korean restaurants with German names ?
The German names on Korean Restaurants are Korean version of a German pub. Many of these places serve just beer and hard liquor but no korean alcohol. The food is also Korean pub food such as fried chickens ,french fries and Korean bar snacks.Baden Baden been to the Manhattan one many times is very popular with Korean-Americans and has loud music and very good chicken.
Queens Crossing "Mulan" Restaurant?
Can you post more info on the location of the restaurant.I also want to write i really enjoy your post of the going on in Bayside,Flushing area.
Juniors - Worst. Burger. Ever.
I haven't been in Junior's since 1995.My girlfriend and i walked in late one night and after receiving our food we were asked to hurry up as they will be closing in 10 minutes and telling me that these guys need there sleep as they work so hard..We ate in a hurry and never returned. We used to go there frequently as it was one of the few late options and the food was always mediocre.I heard that they ruin breakfast also.
Do you think Asian food is supposed to be cheap?
I'm curious about how most Chowhounders think about Asian cuisine. Over the years I have seen many postings about various types of Asian cuisine. I have noticed that several postings claim that Korean restaurants are too expensive and that Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants are so cheap by comparison. There seems to me an underlying criticism and questioning as to why this is the case. I think we should be careful about generalizations in this context because all too often they do not take into consideration other factors such as quality of ingredients, service, location, atmosphere, labor and what you're getting for the money you're paying. There are high class and expensive Chinese restaurants as there are whole-in-the-wall cheap Korean restaurants in New York. There are also restaurants in between.Let me know what you think?
Dumpling House (Eldridge Street) Gone or Expanding ????
I was so shocked , thought i walked into a restaurant. There was tables and the place actually looked very good.I ordered the pork and chive dumpling ,notice the price went up it's now 4 for $1.They also have a paper menu and saw many new items are included with a slight price increase..After a bite on the dumpling the only change i can see is there is a bit less filling. It was still tasty and still a bargain even with a increase.
Korean restaurants, I don't get it.
Right on, Miss Needle. One of my pet peeves is when people complain about how expensive Korean food is compared to other Asian cuisine. The poster had ordered the BBQ meat which is usually the most expensive item on the menu.In New York , where i live it is usually $22-26 for beef items in Korean restaurants. If you stick to individual soups the price will be about $10-$12. Seafood items range in $12- $16. Banchan is also unlimited with free refills of rice which works out to be a very filling meal .I'm just using New York pricing because it is more familiar but i think you get the point.
The price of Asian food is more about what you order. I can goto Chinatown and order a meal for $ 90 for 10 people , which will mostly be a lot of noodles and sauteed vegetables with sprinkling of meat and fried items or i can order the special of the house with a whole fish thrown in . In Vietnamese Restaurants i notice that there is a similiar type of BBQ set up.I never ordered it because i always order the pho .I do not think That Meat dish is cheap not sure of price. I pay about $5 for a large bowl, do not get anything with it besides bean sprouts .
Bottom line, poster was the food you had on its own did you feel ripped off in terms of the quality and quantity? Or did you feel the food should have been cheaper just because it was in an Korean restaurant in a Koreatown. My assumptions since you said it was packed by Koreans.
P.S Mandoo soup is never thick, corn starch is never used in korean food except Chinese-Korean cooking.
New Coffee shop coming to 4th ave.
I was walking by the corner of 4th Avenue and Carroll Street when I noticed a sign that read that Brooklyn Bean is coming soon. I spoke to one of the people working on a really cute mural at the corner and learned that a coffee shop will be opening sometime in January. I'm really looking foward to their opening.
San Soo Kap San ...
San soo kap san does what i call a half version meaning they do use wood chip but they put it on a gas stove.Essentially the meat is cooked with the heat from the wood chip and the gas is used to control the flames.Their are a few places that has been using this system but it doed not mean it is unauthentic.Nam oh jung use thissystem also .
Korean Harvest Festival at Flushing Meadows
I been going every couple of years since the first one. the food is more basic stuff like L.A kalbi and rice, dukkboki a spicy rice cake and kimbap a rolled rice in seaweed and and o-deng fish soup. a lot of korean snack foods.tons of the same food with restaurants having a bit more variety in their menu. i did see 2 years ago lamb kabob uigher style by the chinese -korean association for $2 .just so you know a lot of non-restaurants selling food are from churches and is basically their fundraiser so don't expect them to be that professional .
it is worth a trip out there because you never know what to expect.for a few years a vendor was selling sea eel freshly killed cooked a veriety of ways.
Best Ramen in NYC?
Before you go running to Queens ,Dasanko changed to West Udon. I heard it is a japanese chain but has very similiar menu.I have not been yet .
Kun Jip - what to order?
I has sam gyub sar (sp) the pork belly that is cooked on a portable burner. order 2 servings and they will mix rice with seasoning on the pan with the leftover pork.it's really good and don't bother getting kalbi there as they don't cook with wood chips.Kun jip is really good for jigae and pork dishes.
Ideas for a catered Lebanese meal?
I know D'vine taste in park slope does catering. It is a gourmet lebanese deli not a restaurant almost the same as Sahardi. You should check it out by trying a sample of their food first before ordering.
Kyoto - Waraji-Tei - Perceptor's Photo Report
Thanks for posting ! i will be going to Osaka in September and i can't wait have you gone to any Korean restaurants while in Osaka? There is a large Korean population there.
Korean Spicy Chicken
The one i think your thinking about is gone .The owner changed it into a regular korean bar about a year ago. Have never heard about another place yet.
sorry
christo's steakhouse
Christo's is actually in Astoria not flushing.Last summer had a nice dinner on the sidewalk. i remember the porterhouse for 2 was very good maybe one notch down from Peter Luger. The steak was as i ordered it medium . i had an intresting greek appetizer with a potato which i enjoyed but can't remember. All in all a very pleasant place for a steakhouse as they have many greek items . they provide valet parking as the restaurant is in a more residential neighborhood and parking is difficult.
Good meal at el pollo
went on sat. night couldn't get into Song it was so packed and we were all starving so decided to go elsewhere.el pollo is right next door While looking at the menu a passerby stated the chicken was very good so decided to go in.There was only one table occupied it is a small place and the menu is small too compared to coco rocco. We ordered a half chicken, avocado salad and a seafood rice dish. The chicken was very moist and well seasoned .the salad was a mix of romaine with mesculin a few sliced cucumber and tomato and cut avocado on top they also gave us 3 salad dressing in those plastic take out container , the seafood salad had mussels, squid shrimp amd fake crab meat the rice dish i liked very much as the rice was soft which i like in a tomato base . service is adequate at times it was slow and did not come to check on us and i received my inca cola after 10 minutes. we also had to ask for the check .they seemed to do a brisk take out and delivery.
a good place to have a meal whithout all the hype and loud music if you want to talk to your dining companion.they did not have alcohol so i guess its BYOB.
oh, the address is 5 ave btwn 2-3 st.
Korean BBQ for 12 people in Bayside or Flushing for special occasion?
I also second san soo gap san,the meat quality is very good they advertise they use angus beef.also nam o jung on northern and 162 st (i think) on the corner also has good quality beef.
What to order at Zoma new Ethiopian place ?
Finally made it to Zoma ,dinner plans had to be postponed because of the nor'easter that arrived on sunday last week.Got there at 5:30 2 tables were occupied .
Ordered the meat sambusa it's labeled as fillo pastry which did not does justice to what we received .It was hot and crunchy the way its supposed to be with a dab of red sauce on the side . the pastry wrapping the meat was definitly not fillo dough it had specs of maybe black pepper to add a nice sharp bite and the sauce was nicely spicy.we ordered the veg. combo you get to pick 4 dishes had the gomen (collard green) was well done also it tasted very sweet . i never had gomen like this in other ethiopian place its usually cooked i think with a little vinegar and it has a sharper taste and the collards are usually not cooked till limp.it was good but different.the same can be said for the misir wett(red lentils) i found it not well done enough ,too crunchy for my taste , liked the fassolio(string bean) it was well spiced .atakilt wett(potato and carrots) was a little bland .
The other combo consisted of doro wett(chicken and egg) was well spiced and tasted very rich . one of the better versions i had. yebeg alicha(lamb in mild sauce) tender lamb was very good ) . bozena tibs (beef in sauce )was very good .we also had assa tibs(tilapia with spice) the fish was very good very fresh there definetly was cumin, coriander and maybe curry powder. the highlight of the meal.
service was good , the food was very good but still miss Zula.
What to order at Zoma new Ethiopian place ?
Going this sunday for the first time was a big fan of Zulu and have been satifying my ethiopian cravings at Awash in east village. Want to try someplace new and the reviews i found have been mixed on Zoma spicying such as one poster writing too bland and others posting too much spices that it is all you can taste. Can anyone tell me what to order thats especially good?
Harlem brunch--strike one.
Have you tried Amy Ruth on 116 st. near lenox ave. they have great chicken and waffles and they might be faster service as they get very packed for brunch .which reminds me its been a while since i've been there must go up soon
Snooky's gone????
The word out in the hood is it will be a high-end italian place . the former snooky restaurant partner just has a new business partner. I was reassured that the hambuger will be the same.I think it was one of the most under-rated burger in the slope.the place needed to change as nobody under 35 ever walked inside .
