Costco Food Finds - 2nd Quarter 2015

If there's a manufacturer rebate on the signage, it's taken off immediately at the register. Sometimes they coincide with the coupon book, sometimes not.

Yes...they still have the books. But, you can go online and check the sales. You can either download the costco app, and show them the coupons get one at customer service. The cashier usually have them on hand, as well.

Rockland County - Whole Lamb for Greek Easter

Not close, but worth the trip to Corrado's in Clifton, NJ (40 minutes at most, from West Nyack). They'll get you what ever u want. They usually have a lamb or two in stock, on top of taking orders. I get my suckling pigs here, too. They carry foods from ALL ethnicities and cultures. Totally worth a trip. They're is a bunch of halal, greek, slavic, food shops in the surrounding area. I live in whiteplains now, but still make bimonthly visits. It can get a little crazy there right before Orthodox Easter!

Sushi grade fish source in Westchester

Keep a little cup of water near your work space. And if you got a bamboo roll, line it with saran wrap. If you have one of those sushi molds/zusishi, be generous with the pam spray or oil to prevent rice sticking to the form/mold. Also, hmart and daido have inexpensive roe which adds some saltiness, texture and color. My husband loves making sushi at home...you can have so much fun!

Hudson Valley Restaurant Week - March 9-22, 2015

Sorry but I have to chime in....why is it that if a server is usually getting tipped on $100 and are now getting tipped on $60 meal our problem? Shouldn't that be something addressed by whoever(owner/manager /chef) decided to participate in RW?
I actually avoid RW due to such poor service received from a many restaurants. I also hate the "required" valet fees, and $$ supplements. Bummer too, since my wedding anniversary seems to always fall on or near RW.

Costco Food Finds - 1st Quarter 2015

Nanuet costco has philip's mini crab cakes on clearance. $9.97. It was originally $18 something. Not bad...bread crumbs are one of the last ingredients!

Caviar tasting in Westchester?

Yes, they have. They carry it in the stores during the holidays, but it is always available online. It has been becoming a tradition with my family. My mom gets the suckling pig and champagne, and my husband and I get the caviar. We eat like kings for the New Year. Don't have to worry about driving home ;), either. Better than any time I'very had at RTR, Petrossian, or Russian Samovar,(sorry, guys...still luv you!).

Last year Costco had the Bulgarian Osetra on mark-down right before New Year's...it was under $80 bucks an ounce. And it was delicious!
Whatever you choose...happy birthday!

Caviar tasting in Westchester?

Honestly, order a tasting set from Costco. Comes with five kinds, blinks and creme fraiche. Overnighted on dry ice. I bought for New Years', this year and a few times before.Never been disappointed!

Costco Food Finds - 4th Quarter 2014

Palombo Bakery-White Plains

Well, shoprite does have tiramisu, almond biscottis and on occassion pignoli cookies. The tiramisu in the bakery area, and the biscottis and pignoli cookies in the Italian cookie area near the milk. The cookies are from an outside supplier, though. So,they are there,
My husband worked in 3 bakeries many years back. Hackers (new roch), now gone, the runcible spoon in Nyack, and a bakery in Larchmont.Of those, 3 places, only one made their own biscotti, and italian cookies, like pignoli cookies). It is pretty much standard for most of these cookies to be brought from an outside commercial bakery. Smaller bakeries just cant produce their small batches anywhere near a competitive price, nor consistency.
When I go into a bakery, I don't ever bother with those types of offerings. I like to buy something I can't make. (ok, I can, I just dont want to) I look for real whip cream and butter. You'll have a customer for life.

Also, there is a great bakery in blauvelt ny, where they make their own cookies..., not your typical cookies. They are called Le gateau suisse, I believe. Also Anna's bakery in Congers ( Rockland) is good too. I hosted a baby shower and ordered from her. We had cake, cookies and cupcakes for the children. Well the adults got to them first...and ate them all!

The Best Gefilte Fish

I know this is an old post but, I love your technique, how do process the fish? I like you idea about pureeing the onions with the eggs. I have to try it!

Affordable Restaurants [Lower Westchester]

I live in White Plains, and if I see one jore burger joint or mexican/latin restaurant, I'm gonna scream or become a vegetarian!

Cioppino [Westchester]

Kalbi house (central sve, white plains),has a good seafood pot. Served on the portable burner, comes with crab legs, calamari, mussels, fish, and tofu . The fish has bone in it, but it is delicious. It has a tomato base like ciopino, with a little spice. I usually go in the winter time. A perfect dish to warm up to.

Steak in White Plains?

I agree. Had great dishes, just never a good steak. Had the sirloin at X20 and sent it back. Overcharred and under seasoned. Second time not much better, but the waiter made me feel so comfortable, I kept quiet. Loved the octopus app (though I like gaucho grille's more).
Mentioning Gaucho Grille, I have enjoyed their mixed grill and skirt steak. They usually cook it to your specifications, but you have to be careful on busy nights. I will probably go there soon, since now I'm thinking about it (strictly for research purposes only ;)). Maybe, I'll order a different cut, and report back.

Steak in White Plains?

I have read similar stories...either on yelp, opentable, or blogs. I only live 4 blocks away, and have yet to go. I heard stories about bad seating, waiter attitude and inedible steaks. Was hoping management may change. Guess not. Sorry to hear you had a bad night. I would love to find a great steakhouse in the area. One that doesn't push the "up charges", and has friendly service. I can say Mortons is out, as well as X20 for me.

Nicky's Pizza [white plains]

I'm not sure about the logo, but when I walked by a few weeks ago, I saw the old light sign (saying "Nicky's")sitting inside. I'm thinking its the same Nickys, or hoping. After I moved to WP's and found out (via Chowhound) Nickys was one of the preferred pizza places, they had the fire. I hope it is the original owners, and that the quality will be of what I've read.

Costco in Yorktown Heights?

This is a definite...Costco is hiring (mostly within for management) employees for this location.

Costco Food Finds - 3rd Quarter 2014

Yes.....its on the USDA website. Was also at Sam's club. I'm a subscriber of the recall list, and its scary how much gets recalled.

Fantasy Cuisine [Central Ave, Hartsdale]

Thanks! Very similar to noodles + in White Plains. Even the format of the menu is strangely similar.

Fantasy Cuisine [Central Ave, Hartsdale]

Saw people in the restaurant today. I was apprehensive to go with out knowing the menu.

Costco Food Finds - 3rd Quarter 2014

Yes..., these have been around for a while now, but the "Maple Donuts" assorted gem donuts rock...,especially when you get ones with lots of cinnamon and powdered sugar. They are circulating in the Costco's though...one week in Yonkers....the next in Port Chester...so you have to keep your eye opened!

Though a valid point to cancel membership, a commenter put it best...."you guys want to cancel your membership to a company that pays the highest wages to its employees in the retail industry and offers full medical for as little as $9 a paycheck. And you want to go and shop at Sams Club/Walmart, who can care less about taking care of their employees, and who tells their employees to collect welfare? Over a book? And a book that will be back on the shelves again?"
2 Weeks, it'll be back. Costco loves their members....

Great crab legs in Westchester or Putnam

Dont forget when Costco has their seafood roadshows......usually on the weekends. Sometime one leg is over 1 pound!

Blue Hill Stone Barns private table? [630 Bedford Road Pocantico Hills, New York]

Yes, I wanted actually say that it is doable, just not very profitable in the business unless commercially and publicly praised.Nor is it "friendly" to many wallets. Actually, the one's that don't understand how simple it really can be, are the ones that cannot afford the experience.

Blue Hill Stone Barns private table? [630 Bedford Road Pocantico Hills, New York]

I agree. It seems to me that the prices and availability prove that sustainable, farm to table and organic is not a feasible, at least in the tristate area. Maybe for a few, (with the right clientele), but that's it. On the other hand I have my own garden ( tomatoes, lettuce, onion, parsely, kolorhabi, oeoorrs, etc.) and only buy local, organic proteins (including eggs delivered locally every week)....so for a certain price....:)

Port Chester Hall now open

good one!
