Sunday Night in Paris, including a Vegetarian

I know I have said this before but with your 'diverse' group how about Chez Janou? My semi-vegetarian daughter had a delicious meal made up of starters that were filling and meatless, we ate well , we all shared the chocolate mouse, had lovely pastis and wine with our dinner. Lots of families, singles, young couples, pretty Parisians, and nice to go to on a Sunday evening when you have been eating 'big' the rest of the trip.We have also gone to l'as du Falafel on a Sunday, again to eat smaller around the 'big' meals of a trip. We sit inside and semi-relax with salads, soup, and felafel. Very filling and fun on a Sunday.. Also, Astier usually has a fish or two on the menu. I haven't seen it talked about in these parts lately but I had a favorite meal there on a Sunday evening, that I still long to have again.

Trip Report, May 10 - 17 (Fish, Le Villaret, Chez Casimir, A La Biche au Bois, Other)

Thanks for a great post which included the good, the bad, and the beautiful! What brocante is on Rue Bretagne? And the basement of the BHV iw wonderful. Sounds like a great trip.

Sunday Night in Paris - Rotisserie du Beaujoulais vs Robert et Louise vs Cafe des Musees??

Just to throw an olive in to the mix...how about Chez Janou? Although not usually considered the best food in Paris, I had one of my most favorite meals there last December on a Sunday evening. Close tables which I think are cozy(!), lots of pastis, interesting choices, and of course the best dessert (chocolate mousse). In December I had the brandade, in August the duck, in October, I don't remember. Youngish but good for lodish. I would five it a try!
Another Olive...Astier! When we went I had a lentil soup, lamb, the famous cheese course and Baba au rhum the size of my son's head and a bottle of rhum on top. The staff brought out new cheese as the old ones were eaten and again, to me but maybe not to others, a homey feel, less formal.

Sunday Night in Paris - Rotisserie du Beaujoulais vs Robert et Louise vs Cafe des Musees??

I have been to the Rotesserie but not on a Sunday. Shared a first course with the Mister, shared one duck, that came out in two courses, and dessert. I am sure the starter was a foie and I do remember that the duck was deelish. I hate recommending anything on this board because expectations are high and if your chioice is viewed as the wrong choice, ouch, it hurts. That said, I would go back.

sarasota dinner

We are in Holmes Beach just till Monday. But I come back about every 6 weeks. I always appreciate recommendations! Mostly we eat at Star. You will see me with my sisters tomorrow in front of Duffys, watching the parade.

sarasota dinner

I was at Star last night and on Wednesday and we waited way to long for dinner. Grouper anf fried oysters were perfect. I even love the cole slaw and hush puppies! Last night was told that you could go next door and buy fish at wholesale prices...gutted but not really dinner-cooking ready. Also you can put your name on a list for when the tuna comes in. But don't tell anybody.

In St. Pete - Tampa area for a week

Near the Dali Museum is a tapas place called Ceviche. There are a number of places in St. Pete, near the Dali, that are good and on Saturday mornings there is a market. Closer to home, i.e.Anna Maria, Beach Bistro always gets raves, as does Eat Here, the little sister restaurant! We like drinks and a sandwich at the Sandbar, but not more than that, and don't forget to sit outside. Skinny's for burgers in front of the county beach and Mr. Bones for BBQ (we do it as takeaway). Fish is from Star Fish in Cortez and Jose's Real Cuban food further in on Cortez Blvd.for, well, real cuban!

So many opinions...what restaurant do you like that desn't get raves on the board?

How about Le Temps des cerises on the rue de la Cerisaie in a far corner of the Marais near the Bastille. Went for lunch, friendly service, lively bar, good food. After walked to the Seine to catch the boat that goes under the streets of Paris to the Canal Saint Martin.

We went in December to La Regalade Saint-Honore. Everyone always talks about the other original restaurant and talks down this one. It was just lovely! The staff was warm and inviting, lots of room between tables, and mixed ages eating, which was important to us. We dont like being the oldest nor the youngest. Starting with the pate and pickles a three-course meal was 35 euro with a bottle of Oeillade 2008 23 e. The pate ? Delicious. The gambas with risotto entree? Yummy. The chicken for the plat? Perfect. And the pear dessert? I could have eaten two. The mister finished with the riz cuit au lait, with the caramel but I loved the pears more. I would go back and recommend. Perhaps I will one day try the original but I was most happy with this choice.

So many opinions...what restaurant do you like that desn't get raves on the board?

We all have our favorites in Paris. But sometimes when we mention that certain favorite restaurant (whatever it might be) on this board, an out pouring of NOOOO's follow. What is your fave restaurant in Paris, that doesn't ever turn up on someone's '4day3night' list. And what about it do you like?

Proposal Trip! Restaurant Lineup help needed for 4 days in Paris

How about on Sunday you have dinner at L'As du Fallafel and then head over to the Eiffel Tower and watch the lights, and perhaps pop the question! After your lunch and snacks on Sunday I think that would be enough (especially leaving room for champagne after the question is popped). Other than Sacre Couer you good definitely get all in on Monday but after a big lunch you might not want to. We went to La Regalade Saint Honore and loved it, service, setting and food. But that was my very humble opinion. Wednesday at the Louvre check out their site and get the walking tour of the best to see of the Louvre. And in London we ate simple, and the best is Ottolonghi, the restaurant off portobello has a communal table in the back and NOPI was lovely.

Josephine Chez Dumonet Prices

Although I didn't make it to Josephine on our last visit to Paris, we have gone before and have sat next to the bathroom ( with the chef coming out to talk with us and check on our meal) and have sat in the bar room ( with Gérard Depardieu at the next table). What did I learn from the first visit? When making reservations ask to be seated in the bar room or the first room. And hope that works!.
The foie is wonderful to share, the boeuf bourguignon half order is plenty for most, the crispy skinned duck confit on top of those great potatoes are a treat. I personally didn't like the souffle, but that is me and I guess one should order it once. From looking at what others were eating there is much more on the menu that I would try. The setting is lovely, yes the wine list is daunting, but I think it is worth it. And they do have wine by the glass.
Don't forget to report if you go. We all want to know the outcome.

Bringing cheese back from Paris - one disappointment with vacuum packing

Tonight we had a mont d'or brought back Dec 6. A lait cru, if that is the correct term, that was vacuum packed and was delicious. Also a beaufort and a munster. It was a great Christmas treat and a perfect taste of Paris.

December 18 - 1 night in Paris .. near Place Des Vosges

Chez Janou...friendly and lively.

Trip report:5 days of eating (and seeing) Paris

Thursday was an eating bust due to too many mixups but just to say we had toast and coffee at Merci, where the coffee was good and dinner at Bistrot de L'Oulette on Rue Tournelles. Restaurant was full, even turning away folks. A 26 euro first and main dish or a little more with dessert we each had a starter: potImarron soup (comforting), a verrine of feta and confit of eggplant flavored with cumin ( deelish) and one plate of pate (okay). Mains were a bit of a dry duck confit with the most wonderful of sides!potatoes cooked to creamy perfection. Two orders of cassoulet, just what the mister wanted! Not my favorite though my daughter raved that the sausages were great and my husband joined the clean plate club. Neighborhood feeling, warm staff. Friday brought blue skies and a trip to the catacombs. Enough sight seeing, on to Pierre Herme, where the staff was great. No bostock, so we had a croissant, one plain one with chocolate, a cannelle, ispahan, Plus two others whose names I can't remember. Needless to say it was love at first site! On to Regis Huiterie for oysters, shrimp and Sancere. OMG. Oysters were as remembered, perfect. And the shrimp Devine. The little restaurant was filled with mostly Americans and a Spanish couple who make it their first stop of a trip. 81.50 e. Dinner was an eight o'clock reservation at 'Les Fines Gueles on Rue la Averilliere. When we arrive we were shown upstairs to a table with a view of the street and an empty room. Within 5 minutes it was filled with lots of young people and a few older folks so that we werent alone. Starters were an escargot ravioli which we didn't like for it's everything and a veal carpaccio which melted in your mouth. The other tables had charcroute and/or the burrrata which we would do next time. Mains were the steak tartare with salad and potatoes (19e), duck breast with mushrooms (24e), and a Fish, I don't remember which, on a bed of fresh mixed vegetable. Each dish was delicious, especially the steak tartare, the duck, and fish. Yes, it was good. Our three plates played round robin being passed between us. Hey, were family. Drinks were a gin and tonic for the mister and then a bottle of foo ray. Bill was 141 euro.

Paris market news

Does anyone plan on visiting this market next week?

Five days, five dinners! Where should we go?

We will be in Paris from Dec 1-6. I think they are closed on Sat, Sun. How about December 2?

Five days, five dinners! Where should we go?

If we leave the cheese so to speak,do you think she would like Chez Denise? On your recommendation we loved it!

Five days, five dinners! Where should we go?

the days will be filled with pastries (thanks for the recommendations, will report back) and touring but now we need to eat dinner. There are three of us, one a 23 year old who is not a big plate diner and a first time visitor to Paris. I was going to include Josephine Chez Dummonet but think even the half portions will be a bit much. Also, Astier or Paul Bert? She does love cheese. And the mister, he does like to eat! So any places in mind? Thanks

it's easy to spend $$$$$ where do the common folk of Paris eat?????

I don't know the ratio of local to nonlocal but on a Sunday how about lunch at the Baron Rouge in the 11th? Oysters, cheese and meat plates, bread and butter, wine by the glass or by the bottle and lots of local color from the market. It is a scene not to be missed.

Where is your favorite Cassoulet? [Paris]

We will be visiting in December and i am sure that will be the perfect dish to take off the winter's brrrrrr. Any recommendations?

Five days five pastry shops. Where should we go and what should we eat? [Paris]

I never hear of a 'bostock' before but that sounds perfect!

Five days five pastry shops. Where should we go and what should we eat? [Paris]

I guess that will be my next questions!

Five days five pastry shops. Where should we go and what should we eat? [Paris]

back to Paris with the mister and my daughter and we are looking for the top 5 places to go for pastry and what we should have when there.

Paris report from a failed Chowhound - longish

Your trip sounds deelish! Duck, duck and duck. We are going in December and will follow your lead. Duck, duck, and more duck!

l'Ami Jean Rice Pudding Recipe [moved from France]

Thanks for all these posts and recipes. It is snowing in NYC today and this is what I'll make, for comfort food. Wish I had glasses that glass bowl to eat it out of!

Where we ate last Thurs, Fri, and Sat (even Sun am!)

Just a quick report:
Thursday was Mr. B's--Good looking and lively crowd, Waited 20 minutes for a table for 3. Started with fried oysters (okay) and the three soups (2 out of 3 were good). The Mister had the soft shell crab which he always has a hankering for and wasn't happy how fried it was or how bready (I am going to guess that is a cracker crumb?). Friend had the bbq shrimp (messy) and I had the duck which was divine, cooked to perfection with wonderful vegetables and mashed sweet potatoes. Profiteroles for dessert and lots of wine.
Friday we started with lunch at Johnny's Po Boy and had fried oysters and gumbo. I am going to let anyone who reads this in on a little secret. In the Village of Cortez outside of Bradenton Florida is a restaurant/sea food market called Star. It is right on the water and serves the best fried oysters and cold beer. Great grouper and pompano too. Save your fried oyster eating for there!
Dinner at Galatoire's. Walked in at 7:30 and sat right down. Shripm remulade and asparagus and hearts of palm salad to start with a perfectly chilled bottle of Sancere. I had the grilled pompano with brown butter and sliced almonds and the Mister happily devoured 2 mighty fine soft shell crabs, sauteed to perfection. Sides of creamed spinach and potatoes. Something creamy for dessert. This was great. Loud busy and loving. Well worth the visit.
Saturday started at the farmers market with a glass of Smith Milk, poured b y the lovely Smiths. Spent the late morning wandering around Tulane and Audobon park and then on to Casimento's for lunch. This was the favorite. Started with a dozen oysters and a bowl of gumbo and had another dozen oysters for dessert. Big, juicy, sweet and salty...just like you like them. Cold beer. Loved it.
Couldn't decide about dinner Saturday so we ended up at K-Pauls. I can't recommend this restaurant. The Mister had some dish that he said reminded him of a chinese dish but I had the blackened drum, and it was moist and tender and quite good. A great drink to start, coconut cake for dessert. Go for the Drum but not for much else.
Sunday we went to Stanley's for breakfast. big and hearty.
Sooooo, loved Galatoires and Casimento's. Would go back to Mr. B's for the duck breast, and would try other places next time.
