chain cafes

I used to go Presse Cafe a lot, but I needed a little change of atmosphere so I've started frequenting El Mundo across the street. The coffee is good and the sandwiches are usually pretty solid. It is definitely not as big as Presse Cafe but the atmosphere is more enjoyable, and I prefer the refreshments.

Chow 'secrets' in Montreal

I am hoping to revive this thread a little bit and explore some more of the secret menu items around town.

In my experience, most Chinese places will have off-menu items (which is ironic considering most of those places have menus that read like a short novel). Case in point: Wing Fa on Parc. While it is a pretty lackluster, westernized Chinese joint, Wing Fa does have a pretty extensive secret menu. I have only tried one of the items, crispy spicy beef, and it was better than anything else I had had there in the past. Also, it seems that if you know about the secret items the staff treats you like part of the family! When the manager brought over my beef he also brought over some liquor and took a shot with me! (side note: the shot glasses had a picture at the bottom that initially looked like nothing, but when liquid was introduced the picture coalesced into a naughty image, hah).

Maison Du Nord also has some noodle dishes that aren't on the menu. I have only had the beef with noodle soup, but I can only assume that there are more.

Also, could anyone possibly translate the handwritten Chinese menu items at Cuisine Szechuan? I read a little bit of mandarin, but not enough to piece the dishes together.

Best cafes to study all day at?

There is a great place at St. Marc and St. Catherine. They play classical music, serve homemade soup and croissants, and have a very good mint tea. I'm not entirely sure what its called but it has a picture of a croissant on the sign. Its on St. Catherine...on the northwest corner of St. Catherine and St. Marc.

Good Bistro/North American on a Monday Evening?

It is the 12th, which is making it a little difficult. I believe Holder is open...but I am not sure about the other suggestions.

walked by today on my way to maison du nord. A man came out to say hi and told us that they would be opening this coming monday, maybe tuesday.

Good Bistro/North American on a Monday Evening?

I am taking my Dad out to dinner for the night that he is here (a monday). I've thought about Laloux, Bistro Bienville, APDC, Kitchen Galerie...all closed on monday. I am considering La Chronique or some more mediocre places downtown.

Any suggestions that are of similar quality, in that general vicinity, and open on monday?

best $10.....

Yea, I apologize. I was referring to Spices, which used to be called Mister Spicee, on Victoria. The doubles are cheap and delicious (I usually go for goat or chicken). If you don't feel the need to apply the sauces yourself, ask for them inside the doubles--you wont have to pay.

Has anyone tried the Jamaican place next door? I've wanted to try it, but every time I get near Mister Spicee I can't eat anything else.

Nico's is Closed!! [San Diego]

I've heard the same thing. It is possible that they are renovating. Over the summer, the women who works there told me that they would be redoing the kitchen in the near future.

If Nico's is really gone it would be an absolute tragedy. One of the best carne asada burritos around.

QING HUA DUMPLING

seriously. What's the word?

Good Soup Dumplings/Pho in San Diego?

These are clearly two different foods, but I find myself craving them both equally. Does anyone know a place to get good xiao long bao dumplings in SD? These are the dumplings with soup inside along with some sort of meat filling. These things are addictive, and I haven't had my fix in way too long.

I've been to some of the pho spots on convoy with mixed results. Any recommendations?
