Does 24-hour (or close to it) Chinese delivery exist in NYC?

Ok, not Chinese Food, but Kool Blu is open and delivers in the morning.

I know, I know...not Chinese but still a wide variety of cuisines represented.

Lye

I have not yet. If it is nice next weekend I might jet down there and then move on to the Asian markets. It seems like a nice weekend activity (maybe with a stop at US for the market). If that fails, I will just take up sgordon on his suggestion and get delivery.

I'm not a huge fan of Brooklyn Kitchen (friend of mine got yelled at by the chef, then kicked out without a refund); so, I think I will pass on that option.

Lye

Anyone know where I can get food-grade lye in Manhattan? Trying to make great soft pretzels, but the baking soda option isn't getting me that dark-brown color I need.

I did look at online, but paying $3/bottle and $20 shipping isn't my jam.

Lupa or L'artusi?

Got to Mercato instead. The back room is very intimate.

Daniel gets demoted - NYT

I was seated at that table last year, and it was awful: like a non-stop parade of service staff.

Food was very good and very pretty, but not very interesting. I had the fish wrapped in potato if I recall correctly. This was a splurge meal, and I was slighted that I got a crappy table.

At the end of the day, I will not return. The price was exorbitant, and there are too many great restaurants to bother going back to a place that shoves you in a walled-off corner by the kitchen.

BTW: I am not a novice eater. I graduated CIA in 2005 (Culinary AOS), worked FOH in fine dining restaurants afterwards, and have eaten enough 3-star Michelin meals to know what is great.

Did NY's Pam Real Thai Just Turn Up the Heat?

I've been eating here since I read a Sietsema piece in the Voice about the best restaurants in Hell's Kitchen. It is good (and spicy), I will give it that; however, if this is all Thai food has to offer I kinda feel bad. I always assumed there was something better out there and this was just the best of the 500 Thai places in Hell's Kitchen. Or is really really hot food just what makes Thai food "good"?

Burger King Burger - Kind of Gross

I recall they got bought out back in 2009-2010. New management might be the issue.

Gourmet fruit jelly candies in NYC?

Not exactly made in house, but Dean & Deluca in SoHo has a nice selection of packaged candy jellies; including some rather pricey imports.

Manganaros (9th Ave)

Crap, just saw the note about the age of this post. Maybe it's time for a new thread on Manganaro...

Manganaros (9th Ave)

I get Uncle Nick's delivery now and again. It is serviceable.

I would strongly suggest Turco, a "fast food" Meditteranean concept on 43rd & 9th. The food is very good, as are the prices.

You should really skip Manganaro's and go to Sergimmo on 35th & 9th. Their sandwiches and prepared goods are very good.

New job 31st & Ninth - tasty lunch and dinner suggestions?

Well, you can walk up to Sergimmo on 9th between 35th and 36th for great Italian deli food. Manganaro Hero Boy one block north makes decent sandwiches, and a new Neapolitan pizza place opened up next door.

If you head over 29th and 8th, Uncle Nick's makes serviceable Greek food. Otherwise, you can always walk to 7th Ave., where there are no shortage of options.

Pizza that's real New York ?

I imagine you are referring to the Chinese Consulate on 43rd and 12th Ave. Between that location and Penn there are not many great pizza joints.

Totally second NY Pizza Suprema. If you are looking for "authentic" New York pizza this is an excellent option. If you are seeking more Neapolitan style try Capizzi on 40th and 9th. They have a wood burning oven and make great pies.

Best/worst deals at Whole Foods?

Gotta say, butter is $3.49/pound here in Manhattan. Compared to FreshDirect, Food Emporium, and Fairway it is the best price.

Anyone know where I can get fresh baby corn in Manhattan? Below 59th would be best, but I am flexible.

Maybe try Esposito's on 37th & 9th. They have a wide range of game birds it seems.

Where should I buy fresh seafood now that Lobster Place will be closed for renovations for the next month?

You may want to give Sea Breeze on 40th & 9th a shot.

Help, being forced to go to Olive Garden.

The Bruschetta is actually really normal and totally fine. It is listed as an appetizer, but large enough for an entree. I like to get that, a salad and a big beer and call it a day.

The black & white at Junior's. It outshines the cheesecake.

Best bagels in Tristate area?

Yup, I head upstate from Manhattan once a month to visit family. I'll be heading by Hot Bagel tomorrow, but they were still great last month.

Chelsea - W. 30th - Reasonbale bu good food

Also Mexicue right next to Hale & Hearty. There is a 5 Guys there as well.

Chelsea - W. 30th - Reasonbale bu good food

I wouldn't recommend Frying Pan in that price range either. You are looking more deli/bar food range for that price.

Hale & Hearty between 29th & 30th on 7th is a good stand-by for soups/salads.
Salumeria Biellese on 29th & 8th makes excellent hot dishes and sandwiches (not sure about their hours on Sunday).
There's a Brother Jimmy's on 31st & 8th for totally average BBQ.
Whole Foods on 24th & 7th for....well, Whole Foods (I'm sure you can spend $20/person in a hurry).
Finally, you may want to check out Rare at the Chelsea Hilton on 26th & 7th. Might be at the top of your price range (or just over), but the burgers are decent.

Mezza Westwood

Saw the Times did a review of this place; anyone been? Menu looks a little pedestrian, but the chef seems to have a good pedigree, and the price is right; plus, it is BYO!

Superlative food in Bergen County?

You should try Wild Wasabi in Norwood. It is just a little hole-in-the-wall place, but the sushi is exceptional. I live in Manhattan now, and still return for the sushi. Actually it is quite depressing, the state of sushi in Manhattan...

Arepa flour near midtown?

You should check the grocery store attached to Stiles Market on 41st & 9th. Or Tehuitzingo on 47th & 10th (Mexican, not Venezuelan but there may be a comparable product).

Just out of curiosity, do you keep them in the freezer? Dual does, so I figured I would as well. Just wondering what common practice is.

Dominos' Gluten-Free Crust

Anyone tried it?

I have no gluten allergy, but really like Dominos' thin-crust and wonder how this compares. It might be nice to have that same cracker-thin crust with a little flavor.
