Moa in Rockville?

I've been a few times. Had some soups, noodles and a lunch special. I really like their mandu noodle soup with two sauces; one for the mandu and one for the soup. Their mandu is unlike any I've ever seen, easily 3-4 times the size of the usual mandu. It is so large, it is crescent-shaped; and the meat filling is not just the usual pork mixture; it has kimchi and other ingredients in it and loosely packed. They have some interesting sounding Hot Pot Casseroles. There are about 10 handwritten items on a chalkboard (written in Korean) that is for dinner only. Service is very congenial. Well worth checking out, esp. with a few friends.

DD Barbecue - Sterling, VA

Thanks for all the information. I'll probably check this place out after my class at Tysons this Saturday.

DD Barbecue - Sterling, VA

Yes, they have things that vegetarians can eat. Mango w/sticky rice; taro, plantain and other vegetable fritters; some kind of steamed rice cakes - come to mind.

College Park area food?

You beat me to it. I've been once. Loved what I had. Great, quality fish sandwiches. If I lived nearby, I'd be there once a week.

something worth eating in Olney/Columbia?

I have been to the Iron Bridge Wine Company twice, once for a meal and once for a wine tasting. Their food is good, and the snacks they serve with their wine tastings are delicious. Starting next Monday (and for 2 weeks thereafter), Howard County will have their Restaurant Week and Iron Bridge is participating (lunch and dinner); a good chance to try them out if you were thinking about it. Their vegetarian options are limited, but they will have them.

Oyster Shucking Lessons??

I know of no place in the immediate area, but they give shucking lessons at the St. Mary's County Oyster Festival in the Fall. There are many videos that demonstrate technique, if you just google it. Also, you can watch at open raw bars, like Faidley's at Lexington Market. It really isn't hard, but you need practice to do it efficiently. Good Luck!

Patel Brothers in Rockville has it, so I'm assuming their Fairfax location would have it too.

I was there a few days ago and they didn't have any. I would check with them first if razor clams are what you are going for.

Bon Chon Chicken Fairfax

I ordered a combo (wings and drumsticks) once at the Annandale location and the waiter told me it would take about 35 minutes, and it did. And this was on a Sunday afternoon ~3p with the place about 75% empty.

Moby Dick House of Kabobs

The origin of the name has been mentioned a number of times in early reviews of this restaurant chain. I'll give you partial quotes from one of the earlier reviews:

"Call me Ishmael," I said to my friend Jahanshah, "and I'll call you Queequeg." We had just entered one of my favorite holes-in-the-wall in Washington, the Moby Dick House of Kabob. Why the name Moby Dick? Avast, seafarer, I'll keep you in suspense for a moment on that one. Let's just say that when an Iranian restaurateur started Washington's Moby Dick chain in 1989, he was building on one of the legends of Tehran, not Herman Melville's tale of the whale. “ . .. .. .. . . . . . ..

“Yes, Jahanshah did eventually tell me the story behind the restaurant's name. In the shah's time, one of the biggest kebab joints in Tehran, right near the American Embassy, was called Moby Dick, apparently because the owner just really liked the book. So for Iranians, the name Moby Dick is a little in-joke. “

GW Market "Coming Soon" on Rockville Pike

Not so. It appears to be at least the same size as the Merrifield location, but with a different store configuration. There was a soft opening July 1. The supermarket has the same departments as the store in Merrifield, including the bakery, roasted meats, food court w/eating space, large seafood counter. Not all departments are running full steam yet. The most interesting area is the seafood counter (not fish counter) where they have live dungeness crabs, crystal crabs, stone crabs, crabs from China, lobster (some look to be at least 3-4 lbs), conch, razor clams, marble Goby, and yellow snails. There are a few nice sales going on too, especially some of the mangoes.

GW Market "Coming Soon" on Rockville Pike

Yes, right across the street from the Giant and right next to the Sunoco station. I don't think they will have a salad bar in the American sense - It is a Chinese grocery. I don't know if the store will duplicate the GW in Merrifield, but if they do - it will have a hot food area similar to what they have at Kam Sam and Maxim, only it will be bigger and the food items will be different and will have an area where you can eat it. It will also have roasted meats (cha siao, roasted pig, duck, chicken, etc.) and a bakery (think bao, cakes, etc).
