recommendations for a casual group dinner in Conshohocken

I'm meeting a group of friends in Conshohocken from 4-7pm on Sunday. We won't be ready for dinner at 4, and sitting at a bar isn't a great option because a few people in the group don't drink. My original solution was to go to 'feine to hang out for an hour before it closes at 5. Afterward we could walk to dinner somewhere.

My more recent discovery is Tradestone Cafe. It's open until 7, so I'm wondering if it's a coffee shop atmosphere where we could go and hang out for a while before ordering dinner. I'm also wondering if their food is good.

As far as dinner goes, we're not looking for anything upscale, but we would like a tasty meal. I've heard great things about the food at Limon, but I've never been there. My impression is that it's not a good place to hang out with friends for several hours, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Any opinions about these ideas or suggestions I haven't thought of would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

fruit & cheese skewers

No one cheese in particular. I love brie with pears. I love chevre with lots of fruits, but I can't stick it on a skewer. I like lots of cheeses with apples, but I was concerned about browning until I heard about Opal apples. All my usual go to options didn't seem like they would work.

I got distracted from the project, but it's time for me to get focused again. Thanks for all these great ideas! I'm headed to the store shortly to get some things to try.

three days downtown with kids and a tight budget

Thanks to everyone for the incredibly helpful suggestions not only regarding food but also lodging. After several days of researching and adjusting based on your responses, I finally have a plan that we're really happy about. I figured I'd share it here in case it helps future travelers.

We cut Hyde Park out as a lodging option, but we still didn't want to blow our budget on a hotel in the center of things. We'd much rather explore and eat. Homewood Suites sounded great, but it didn't have any availability on our dates. As a compromise, we decided to stay at Holiday Jones. (Thanks, lpinckney!) The price was unbeatable for June, it's in a fun neighborhood, and it's much more convenient for public transit. As an added bonus, it brings back happy memories of my days backpacking through Europe.

We're going to eat a simple breakfast before we head out in the mornings. We're planning for the rest of our meals and snacks to come from:

The French Market - We'll probably pick up everything we need for a picnic dinner on the lawn during a concert at Millennium Park.

Podhalanka (which is right by Holiday Jones) or Red Apple Buffet (because my hubby and kids love buffets)

Portillo's for hot dogs, Italian beef, and chocolate cake

Lou Malnati's or Pizano's

Frontera Grill for lunch or Cemitas Puebla for dinner

Xoco for churros and chocolate

Garrett's popcorn

We might try to hit Valois when we go to the Museum of Science and Industry. I also made note about FoodLife as a convenient option. Some of the other suggestions sound delicious as well, but our stay is too short to hit them all.

Thanks again for all your helpful suggestions. Now that the big decisions are settled, I'm really looking forward to our visit!

I didn't realize until today that Chicago had such a high number of Polish Americans, so now I'm also intrigued about the possibility of tracking down Polish food.

That's helpful to know. Thanks! I hate the idea of giving up even one local meal, but I'm not sure yet what our compromise will be. I currently have inquiries in about two private condos downtown, which would be more than we wanted to spend but less than anything else I've seen. We'll see if they're available.

Thanks for the input. We're still weighing the hotel cost savings against the convenience, so I appreciate hearing the opinion of locals. Unfortunately, with a family of 5, we can't guarantee we'll get what we need on sites like Hotwire and Priceline. On some we would have to book for 4 and hope they don't notice and/or care. Other sites let us put in 5 people but then automatically bump us to 2 rooms, which we don't need. It's frustrating because all my usual travel planning options aren't working.

I'm intrigued. Do they serve breakfast all day? If so, my husband will be thrilled. Thanks!

We're still working out details, but we're currently thinking we will probably stay in Hyde Park and use the hotel shuttle to get to the center of town. I'm definitely open to using public transit to explore, though it's also nice to have options close to the major attractions.

We're really flexible about food and would love to try anything that's distinctive Chicago fare as long as it's not too pricey. Our kids have huge appetites and adventurous palates.

three days downtown with kids and a tight budget

I'm incredibly excited to introduce my kids to Chicago in June and have been reading through many discussions looking for restaurant ideas. I'm a serious foodie and international traveler, but our kids haven't traveled much yet. They're adventurous eaters though and have enjoyed a lot of the great ethnic food that Philly has to offer. Our limiting factor for the trip isn't taste buds; it's a tight budget. We currently can't afford to splurge on pricey meals and still stay for several days.

Based on what I've read so far, I'm trying to come up with a list of places that would give us a delicious and authentic Chicago experience without breaking the bank. Below is what I've come up with so far. I'd love to hear comments on the current list as well as additional suggestions. I'm sure I'm just scratching the surface.

Pizza - Lou Malnati's/Pizano's

Italian beef - Johnnie's/Al's

Portillo's - I really don't get the hot dog obsession. I was totally against the idea until I read that Portillo's has cheap hot dogs AND great chocolate cake. Now I could be convinced.

Little Goat Diner - I read that they're inexpensive, but I'm nervous because they don't list prices on their menu. I usually only expect high end places to omit prices.

Xoco - for churros & chocolate - Is it worth having a full meal there?

Bongo Room - I've seen it mentioned several places, though the menu doesn't look particularly fascinating to me.

Snacks: Garrett's popcorn - Do-Rite donuts

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can offer!

fruit & cheese skewers

I'm the volunteer caterer for a non-profit fundraiser that's coming up in 2 months. One of the appetizers we're serving will be small skewers with a bite of cheese and a piece of fruit to go with the wine and champagne. As I'm working on details, I'm realizing that my favorite cheese and fruit pairings aren't going to work well because the cheese isn't the right texture for a skewer or because the fruit will brown too quickly. Can anyone help me out by suggesting great skewerable (That's a word, right?!) cheese and fruit pairings? Thanks!

I decided to try Gaya. After driving by, not realizing the name had changed to Arisu, I was annoyed that the guy didn't feel it necessary to mention the name change on the phone.

We had some tasty bulgogi and some so-so BBQ chicken. All the extras were tasty.

Now that we've reignited our love for Korean BBQ, we may return to Arisu or try to track down some of these other options. Thanks for all the help!

I know I'm late to the party, but I just ran across this thread and wanted to add a few votes.

+1 for Vernick - Our first visit was on our anniversary a few years ago, and I was immediately converted.

+1 for Amada - It's not new and exciting, but they have well executed Spanish tapas. It's one we go back to over and over when we're in the mood for tapas and sangria.

Thanks for these suggestions. I actually think I was at Korea Garden years ago, but I wouldn't have thought of it.

On a non-Korean note, I've seen Radice and never paid attention. I'm excited to check it out!

I thought of August Moon, but they got rid of their grill tables when they remodeled.

I'm interested in Kim's, but I may mark it and save it for later since it looks like we have some options closer to home that would work well for lunch.

I had searched for Gaya to check their menu, and Yelp said it was closed. After seeing your post, I searched again, called, and they're clearly open. I'm confused but happy. I've heard great things about Gaya.

seeking great bulgogi in western suburbs or the city

My hubby's birthday is Friday, and I'd really like to take him out for some great bulgogi for lunch. It's one of his favorites from back in the days when some Korean friends would cook it and eat it straight off the BBQ. Unfortunately, I know almost nothing about the local Korean food scene, and most of the discussions on this board aren't recent. We're in Norristown, so I'd prefer options in the western suburbs. I'm willing to drive to the city though if we need to. Thanks for your suggestions!

suggestions for short notice weekend options

My husband and I haven't been downtown to eat much the past few years because we have had little kids. Today my sister randomly asked if our kids could spend the night with her this weekend, and my mother-in-law invited them to stay with her overnight mid-January. We're hoping to make the most of these opportunities. We're looking for suggestions of great places to go on Friday nights without a lot of notice. We're open to suggestions for brunch/lunch on Saturday as well. It's been a while since I've paid attention to what places are popular these days, and the names I know seem to be already booked for this weekend.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Calling all Bucks County Chowhounds

I know this is an old thread, but I have to chime in that I absolutely LOVE Banh Mi Bar. Their traditional pork banh mi is delicious, and I crave it frequently.

I should mention that I've never had banh mi anywhere else, so I have no frame of reference for my adoration.

Blue Anchor

I'm considering bringing a crew into the city Friday afternoon. I haven't been to Spruce Street Harbor Park yet. Can anyone comment on the food at the Blue Anchor? I'm wondering about quality and an approximate price for their burgers, as I would need to communicate that info in advance. Thanks!

What are the most romantic restaurants in central and western Montgomery County?

I was at Parc Bistro many years ago. I really enjoyed it, but my palate was much less refined than it is now. How do you rate their food?
