New Di Noko's - Downtown

I was there on or right around opening day of the new location. They were certainly still working out some of the kinks as the wait time was lengthy (I understand the 45 minute deep dish wait, but this was over 60). I'll add that while the wait was long, it was definitely worth it. I had never visited the old location, not sure why after trying it for the first time. True deep dish, proabably the best I've had outside of Chicago. Crispy crust, great sauce, lots of cheese.

Full bar, yes, beer selection is limited but they have it. They also have a lunch special (not sure if it's only during the week or not), but they offer up slices at $5 or so.

Bison Burger

Not sure if 50th and France is too far out, but IMO Red Cow serves up one of the best bison burgers in the area. Carmelized onions, figs and goat cheese. Dynamite.

I've had another nice version at Republic down at 7 corners...although food has overall been hit or miss there. Brie with a red wine reduction sauce. Flavor was great, reduction could have been reduced a bit longer.

Giardiniera

Whole Foods carries a brand that I always have on hand, I believe it's called "That Pickle Guy". I know it's got smaller pieces of carrots along with the peppers and olives (very few olives), but cauliflower has been limited (if any). They carry a mild and hot version, I always go with the hot. Pretty awesome stuff.

UPDATE: Pulled up "That Pickle Guy" website and it notes cauliflower in the ingredients. It's definitely the stuff.

any good breakfast sandwiches in MSP??

Baker's Wife ham and cheese croissant is quite possibly the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Crazy good.

Where to get Pineapple Bratwurst in the cities?

I know I've found them around the area, can't remember if it was the Wedge (co-op) or Lund's. Regardless, I know they were at the butcher counter. Come to think of it, I believe they were actually chicken sausage...so not technically brats. Pretty awesome.

Need food delivered to an event at U of M St Paul Campus, who to call?

I'll 2nd John's in a big way. Consistently very good pizza with some unusual combinations (in addition to standards). Our go-to pizza delivery spot when visiting friends in the Como area.

Minneapolis for the first time

Uptown will give you both, food options and bars. Bulldog is a great burger joint with a very good beer selection. The Uptown Cafeteria is another spot with decent food. Other spots are the Herkimer (food okay, brew their own beer) and Moto-i (same owners as Herkimer, brew their own sake). Food is okay at both, but better for the drinks/crowd. Chino Latino might be tough to hit your price point for dinner, and the drinks can get pricey, but usually a good crowd. Stella's Fish Cafe is another spot for drinks, maybe food. All of these are either walking distance to one another or a short cab ride.

'Date Night' recs for 2 college students

Barrio or Solera could work. I also like the 112 Eatery suggestion, the $50 might get a little tight, although definitely possible.

Banh Mi Sandwich - Best Place in Mpls or St. Paul?

This may be ridiculed after reco's from 112 Eatery (love it), Jasmine, etc., but I personally enjoy the banh mi from the tiny spot in Dinkytown, Bun Mi Sandwiches. They offer up a classic version, as well as beef, pork and my personal favorite lemongrass chicken. The veggies are always fresh, and the spicy mayo is excellent....sides of fries also come with the mayo. If you don't mind wedging yourself into a tiny spot filled with college kids, it's worth a shot. Don't go with the intention of grabbing a table though...much more of a take-out spot.

Date Night

Acqua Restaurant in White Bear Lake might work. The space is great, albeit very small. Very cozy, definitely romantic. Everything I've tried has been excellent, especially the braised pork shank....absolutely delicious. There's also a beet salad that's off the charts good. They've got a $30 3-course tasting menu available daily...both of the above were part of it the last time I dined there.

Looking for Great Restaurants near Excel Energy Center St Paul

Pazzaluna is one of my favorites downtown St. Paul, and easily within walking distance of Xcel. That would fit your Italian reco. Mertiage (french) is consistently one of the top rated restaurants in St. Paul, also within walking distance. A little further, Barrio and Bulldog are more bar types (Barrio is run by a James Beard winner). Bulldog is definitely better than average bar fare with a great beer list. Further yet (MAYBE cab, albeit short cab ride) is Heartland. Excellent food, new location downtown.

Surly on Tap

If you're in the downtown Mpls area, Mackenzie's is one of my favorite beer spots. A ton of GREAT options, typically have at least 2 Surly taps. Located right next door to the Orpheum.

Roman Anthonys WBL

I've only had the chance to stop it once, but would absolutely go back. I was in a party of 4. Outstanding meal, everyone seemed very pleased. Salads were excellent (table side caesar was top notch). The sea bass dish was one of the best I've had, the chicken parm was also very good. The ravioli was raved about as well. While limited in choices, the 2 desserts we tried were excellent (tiramisu and I believe the other was some sort of strawberry shortcake).

Birchwood Cafe + Minneapolis interior design--what gives?

I have to agree with a few of the other responses here that the Haute Dish comment is a bit ridiculous. The bar is gorgeous and makes a beautiful focal point in the front room. We sat at one of the "low, un-private booths" with no open tables on either side and felt completely comfortable with the space. I'm sure my wife would agree with the TV comment, but the back dining area is TV free, is it not?

MSPD said it best, if the food is great, I'm much less concerned about the space (but in this instance, I think the space only adds to the appeal).

112 Eatery, still good?

One quick correction, Alma is on Open Table under Restaurant Alma. Agree that service needs to be above average for a location to be truly "great", and on that note I haven't experienced a lack of customer focus at 112 in the numerous times I've dined there. That's certainly not to say others haven't experienced it. It's a shame if that's happening, the place is still near the top of my list in Mpls.

Popovers??

So this option is definitely NOT in the city, but the best popovers I've ever had are at The Laurel in New Richmond, WI, hands down. Roughly 45 minutes east of St. Paul. Old school supperclub, popovers served at the beginning of the meal. Of course served with fantastic honey butter.....salivating....yum.

Haute Dish

Great write-up, completely agree on all accounts. We were there shortly after opening and they were already running on all cylinders. The Steak and Eggs 1st course was outstanding (steak tartar, egg in a hole, oyster shooter), and the house salad was FAR better than your standard "house salad". Tater Tot Hotdish is off the charts, comfort food to the max. Chicken and Dumplings was also very good. Great beer list, solid wine offerings, and the food is excellent. Agree that the dessert was just okay (sponge cake), but that didn't detract from the absolutely fantastic meal.

Dinner near Varsity Theater?

Kafe 421 is right around the corner, not a bad spot within walking distance. Loring Pasta Bar is the only other restaurant worth mentioning that's within walking distance. Agree with Big E on his reco's, but none are close enough to walk...although none are that far either.

MSP- Pork Buns?

In December there was a post that called out Moto-i as not specifically noting "pork belly" buns on their menu...it's definitely on the menu now, and I tried them last week. Really solid buns...would highly recommend to anyone.

Anybody eaten at the 2nd floor restaurant/lounge at the Movies at West End in St. Louis Park?

I think this is a perfect review. Definitely adequate for what it is, convenient spot to grab a small bite and a drink before or after a movie. My wife and I have also tried a pizza (good, not great), and a cheese/meat tray. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the cheese and meat. They're definitely making an effort to exceed expectations...and I have to say they did exactly that in my only visit to date (note that mine were quite low going in).

50th anniversary party in Stillwater, any suggestions?

LOVE Hideaway....consistently excellent food and service. Marx right on Main St. is also good. Not sure how easily either place could accommodate a large party, so that's something to consider. If it's a relatively modest sized group (15 or fewer), I wouldn't think either would have a problem. Above that MIGHT be difficult. Lake Elmo Inn (also very good food and service) has a much larger capacity.

Edina / Minnetonka/ south Minneapolis dinner...good food and atmosphere???

Really like the Ciao Bella recommendation...haven't been to Bacio. Heidi's and Cafe Maude are 2 options that come to mind in South Mpls.

MSP - Ideas for a 21st birthday bash?

Thought I'd throw out some options that I think might be fun for a 21st:

Bulldog (Northeast or Uptown) - great beer selections, and if people want to eat, the food is above average bar food. Definitely appropriate for a 21st birthday. (http://www.thebulldogmpls.com/

)

Barrio (Downtown) - not necessarily cheap drinks, but the bar has a great vibe. The food there is also very good (think small plates - Mexican). Can get extremely busy in the bar area on the weekend, but during the week it's not bad. (http://www.barriotequila.com/

)

Club Jagr (Warehouse District) - VERY chill bar. Personally think this is one of the coolest looking bars in the city. Usually a good crowd on the weekends, but can be slow during the week. Transmission (DJ - indie, retro, etc.) happens on Wednesday's at 10, usually draws a decent crowd. Haven't had any food so can't comment on that. (http://clubjaeger.com/)

Restaurants around the St. Paul UofMN campus [MSP]

My wife and I are big fans of Muffaletta, which is very close to the St. Paul campus on Como Ave.. A lot of the meats are sourced locally, which is a nice touch. They're also doing something kind of neat, "Tender prices for Tough Times", a nightly special Sunday - Thursday for $10. The food is consistently very good.

Another vote for Manny's....far prefer the ambiance there than at Murray's. Steaks are always excellent, not to say they aren't at Murray's. The Living Room and/or Prohibition are nice spots to grab a cocktail prior to or after dinner as well....all 3 are located within the W.
