FOODCORE's Profile
Pizza:Studio City/Sherman Oaks
Caoiti Pizza Cafe in Studio City on Tujunga south of Moorpark is pretty good. I prefer their NY-Style pizza to the California pizza... which apparently the chef there invented. He used to be the pizza chef at Spago, so it's pretty damn on-the-level. And while I wouldn't say it's the best pizza in LA, it's easily my favorite place in the Valley.
As far as Joe Peep's, the crust IS garlic bread. And while I love garlic bread, I do not love this... I can't say I'm a fan.
Seeking Cheap Eats (NOT Fast Food) For Lunch in West Hills/Woodland Hills
I tried Cavaretta's today, got a Traditional Italian Sub and it was pretty good... I could've gone for more meat on the sandwich and maybe a bit of oil & vinegar, but definitely a good spot that will work it's way into my lunchtime rotation. I'm looking forward to hitting up some more of these recs. Keep 'em coming!
Seeking Cheap Eats (NOT Fast Food) For Lunch in West Hills/Woodland Hills
I have passed both of these places too... India Sweets & Spices is definitely on my list, and do you know if this Mission Burrito is affiliated with the Mission Burrito on Roscoe and Fallbrook? Cause I've been there a handful of times... I forget what I've had, but it can be pretty intense.
Seeking Cheap Eats (NOT Fast Food) For Lunch in West Hills/Woodland Hills
Snapper Jon's has shark tacos... SHARK TACOS! I don't have to say more, I'm already sold... and Cavaretta's sounds very very promising... I'll probably hit it up today! I'll let you know how it goes... thanks!!!!
Incidentally, there's a place half a block past the WAMU on Sherman Way (heading away from Topanga). If anyone knows the place I'm thinking off, I've seen people in and out of there, (I feel like there's a green awning) I have no idea what it is, but I've meant to stop to check it out too... any insight on that place?
BEST RED VELVET BIRTHDAY CAKE???
I wanted to follow-up and thank everyone for the multitude of suggestions. Also, I stand corrected as Doughboys DOES offer a whole cake ($35). And that's what I wound up getting. My girlfriend loved it!!! In any case, I now have the list of the red velvet cake suggestions in my car so if I'm near any of them, I can make a quick stop.
Seeking Cheap Eats (NOT Fast Food) For Lunch in West Hills/Woodland Hills
I work near Topanga Canyon Blvd and Roscoe and am seeking to expand my lunchtime options as most of my current lunchtime choices offer dollar menus. I don't like to spend more than six or seven dollars per meal as it adds up pretty quickly. Places that I'm thinking of might be along the lines of Dan's Super Subs on Ventura (near Shoop) where I can get a great sub for $5, though it's kinda far so I have to bring it back to work and eat it there -- which is fine. I'd like to find some good chinese, thai, indian, and mexican places too. I'm really very quite open and varied in my food interests and for whatever reason have been hesitant to explore with places in the area... I got burned several times and was left hungry, so I'm just feeling out for some help here. I really would appreciate any recommendations in the area in ANY cuisine. I only have an hour for lunch (including travel time) so please keep that in mind. All help would be greatly appreciated!!! I'm already getting hungry...
Seeking Pinkberry-like Frozen Yogurt in West Hills/Woodland Hills Area
Where is this? I've only been to this mall once and walked around the food court area and only saw a gelato place (that looked good) called "melt", but no fro-yo.
Need A Place To Meet Up With Friends For Dinner On Saturday Somewhere Between Riverside and Hollywood
I am meeting up with friends from Riverside on Saturday night for dinner and will be leaving from Hollywood. We would like to find someplace relatively in the middle, but as those options may prove few and far between, I am open to all suggestions. My friends would a place with an awesome wine list and I am looking to keep it under $15/person before drinks. Thank you in advance for your help!
BEST RED VELVET BIRTHDAY CAKE???
These all sound great! My girlfriend is a big fan of the Doughboys red velvet cake, but alas they don't sell an entire cake!
Seeking Writer-Friendly Establishment Between Sherman Oaks And West Hills
I am looking for a good place to grab a drink/snack/dinner and get some writing done on my drive home to Sherman Oaks from my day job in West Hills. I usually take Vanowen, Victory, or Roscoe, but I am willing to compromise my route in exchange for a place to get some good food while getting work done. I have never required silence in order to work, so noise is not an issue for me, though I'd hate to take up a table for an hour or more during the dinner rush while being perpetually pressured to leave. I have frequented many a donut shop, but it just doesn't quite hit the spot for me the way Dunkin' Donuts did back east. I write in a notebook and do not fall into the same category with the overtly conspicuous laptop crowd populating any given Starbucks. As this may become a routine, price may be an issue. Any place with tables that offer some modicum of privacy would be an added bonus, though not by any means a requirement. Thanks for any help you might offer... I hope to spend my time being productive as opposed to waiting for the bus.
BEST RED VELVET BIRTHDAY CAKE???
I need to get my hands on the best red velvet cake made in the Los Angeles metropolitan area for my girlfriend's birthday in a few weeks. I want it to be the most amazing thing she's ever tasted and be enough to feed 6 people. Thanks x 1 million!!!
Lunch in Sherman Oaks/Studio City
Here's my 2 cents...
Mexican
Bronco Restaurant - the corner of Moorpark and Woodman
Senor Fred - Ventura near Woodman
Chinese
Kung Pao Bistro - Ventura (one in Studio City and another in Sherman Oaks)
American
Nat's Early Bite - Hazeltine & Burbank
Hugo's - Coldwater & Riverside (i think)
Four 'n Twenty - Van Nuys & Burbank and another on Laurel Canyon near the 101
Italian
Caioti Pizza Cafe - 5 mins east of Studio City (closest Italian that I'd even consider eating)
Retro Candy
There's a retro toy store in the Valley on the corner of Burbank Blvd and Hazeltine Avenue, next to Nat's Early Bite. It's called 'Big Kids' or something to that effect. They have a bunch of retro candies and is definitely worth checking out!
thai in van nuys
Sherman Way around Coldwater is a goldmine of incredibly excellent Thai food... there's Sanamluang Café, Krua Thai, Sunshine, and a slew of other incredible Thai restaurants in a two block radius.
Seeking Pinkberry-like Frozen Yogurt in West Hills/Woodland Hills Area
I had Pinkberry last night for the first time and am craving a similar experience (copycats will work just fine) on my lunch break... please help!
An open letter to fellow 'hounds who recommended Canton Kitchen as providing egg rolls comparable to those found in the New York metro area
I can sympathize with your quest, Mr. Taster... I grew up in Howell, NJ myself, and am going through a similar quest for egg rolls out here... in addition to the (yellow-ish colored) wonton soup you would find back east.
NEED RECS FOR DINNER **TONIGHT** in Westwood Area
I have only been to Westwood on a handful of occasions and in my limited experience I have only had the displeasure of joining my friends to eat at local UCLA fratboy standbys and chain restaurants. I am joining some friends for dinner tonight at a place of my choosing, and I would prefer to experience something unique (enough for me to at least respect myself after), and though I hope not to drop no more than $15 - $20 (though less would be fine too) I am hoping for a fun and delicious experience. I am always in the mood for japanese, korean, or mexican, though I welcome all suggestions as I am easily swayed by good food. Please help!!!
Takoyaki, where are you?
I believe the place you're talking about in NY is Otafuku on Sullivan. I loved loved loved that place and had totally forgotten about it until reading your post. Please let me know if you find a place that is comparable or at least passable as I'm now craving takoyaki, thank you very much!
Incidentally, I should mention the reviews of the takoyaki at Ebisu in Fountain Valley sounded promising:

Ramen places in San Fernando Valley?
Couldn't agree more about Nippon Ramen. It's head and shoulders above any ramen I've had. I was there this past weekend and I had the spicy miso ramen with a side of gyoza. Awesome!
ramen recs in the valley??
Actually, Nippon Ramen at 6900 Reseda Blvd (north of Vanowen) is quite good. I went there on Saturday and have been recommending it to everyone I know (and some I don't). It's much better than Kyushu, which is totally fine, but I've had a mix of experiences with them despite the fact that I wanted to love that place. I mean their menu is certainly extensive and they're open till 1 am, which can be clutch for someone like myself who often eats late. But, yeah, check out Nippon Ramen.
Kyushu Ramen - Van Nuys
While I like Kyushu Ramen, and the menu is fairly extensive, I much prefer Nippon Ramen a few blocks west on Reseda just north of Vanowen. I just went there for the first time this week, and was blown away. I read a review of someone raving about it on Yelp! and decided to give it a go. I took the review with a grain of salt, but it exceeded all expectations. Prices are comparable to Kyushu, but the food is better. Only downside for Nippon versus Kyushu is that the menu at Kyushu is far more expansive.
thai in van nuys
Your prayers are answered... in North Hollywood. Go to Sherman Way around Coldwater. There's about five different (all good) thai places. I usually hit up Krua Thai myself for their excellent Pad See Yoo. But yeah, that little strip is great. Not to mention on weekends the Watt Thai Temple on Coldwater Canyon has an open air market with a bunch of food stands.
Sick and want soup to go in the East Valley!
A truly great place for soup that may be worth a bit of a drive (or is at least worth a mention) is Nippon Ramen on Reseda (north of Vanowen). I think the address is 6900 Reseda. I went there the other night for the first time. It's in the corner of a small strip mall, and upon entering I got that feeling that I had stumbled into a great food find. I should note that all the menu items are under $10. I got the Spicy Miso Ramen combo with gyoza. The soup itself looked intimidatingly fiery, however while packing some punch in the heat department, it did not distract or overwhelm from the tastiness of the soup. And while I wouldn't recommend that particular soup for everyone, solely on account of the heat factor, the gyoza were delicious and they will certainly accompany my meals on all future visits. It was the best ramen experience I've had, hands down, ever! Give it a shot... and if the drive is too much now, it's worth a visit when you're feeling better.
