Maybe they took the "jam" part too seriously.

NY-style chopped liver with schmaltz?

In case anyone is looking, the Butcherie has small containers of schmaltz already rendered. It has dehydrated onions and BHT in it. I decided to just buy thighs and make my own so I could put the onions in and get some grieven chunks.

NY-style chopped liver with schmaltz?

Schmaltz and grieven (my mom's word) made with onion were in my mom's chopped liver (oh how I miss it). And ARE still integral to her matzo balls & potato kugel.

Since I'm doing my own Seder this year, does anyone know anywhere I can buy 1) premade schmaltz & greiven/gribenes with onions (preferred)? or 2) a tub of raw (ideally kosher) chicken fat to make my own? Thanks!

2 oz glass spice jars with sifter tops

I suspected China Fair was my best bet. Time to call them. Thanks everyone!

2 oz glass spice jars with sifter tops

Why would I be offended OC? The company said the top is close to airtight, but not completely. Sounds good enough to me for my spice use. Whenever I worry about my spices, I think about how long spices used to travel and what the conditions must have been like. Mine HAVE to be starting out much fresher.

These are for my spices (to try to fit my bulk purchases into my tiny spice drawer). It's true that I do scoop a lot of the time, but I do cheat a lot and shake and eyeball. My Penzey's spices frequently have the shaker top under underneath the lid, and a one piece would be so much easier, even if I do have to remove it to scoop.

Best canned soups?

Not Trader Joe's. All of the ones I've tried are AWFUL. Maybe Progresso?

2 oz glass spice jars with sifter tops

Does anyone know where I can find about 60 two oz (short) glass spice jars with sifter tops locally? China Fair? I'm in Brookline. I'm not in a rush, but local would be nice. On the other hand, I found them online for only $0.73 each with tops, which is probably hard to beat.

Like these: http://www.containerandpackaging.com/...
or the small jars from Penzey's. Or square/rectangular should work too, but they need to be short (about 2 inches tall).

Thanks!

Frozen Sour Cherries?

I just bought them last week at Bazaar in Brookline at 1432 Beacon St. They're in the freezer on the back wall (parallel to Beacon St.) in clear rectangular plastic containers. Made a great sour cherry pie for Pi Day (and so much easier than pitting my own fresh ones!).

Columbus oh recommendations

2 downtown lunch ideas: Katzinger's Deli (German Village) and North Star Cafe (Short North), which has a truly amazing (even for carnivores) veggie burger. There's also a North Star just south of Worthington in North Clintonville. If you're into coffee, Mission Coffee in the Short North is a place I make a point to go when I'm in town.

The North Market (not on Mondays) has a lot of great options too.

I'll leave dinner recommendations to folks who know the area better (I've been away for a few years.
And Pistacia Vera is a fantastic bakery in German Village, which is definitely worth a trip (just a few blocks from Katzinger's).

Sour cream substitute

Agreed. I use Trader Joe's full fat Greek yogurt for sour cream all the time. It's wonderful!

Baking when sick?

I'd like to bake cookies today (I have a babysitter!!), but I have a cold and a slightly scratchy throat. Would my cookies make people sick if I take care to wash a lot and don't cough or sneeze on anything? Thanks!

Lox & Bagels

Sorry for the delay in response, OC (it's been a busy week!). Because of your question, I took one for the team and went again last Saturday, so I could give a more thorough response. Tough work. I have to admit, the first time (last Friday), I just wolfed it down, enjoying my sandwich, but not really analyzing it. So...

Cutty's calls it house-cured lox, but it doesn't taste salty at all (actually I would call it mild or even slightly sweet). Nicely sliced. I got mine toasted, but my husband didn't, and I really don't think they need to be toasted after all. A poppyseed bagel when tasted plain had a little bit of a sour tang. I preferred it with toppings. My bagel was salt (always), and I got the lox, fried capers, but no pickled onions. My husband got it with pickled onions too. Good, but a little overwhelming. They taste like the onions that come in Jewish pickled herring in wine sauce from when I was a kid (do they still make it?). Next time I'll go for an untoasted salt bagel, lox, & capers. Yum!

Lox & Bagels

Just had a yummy in-house baked salt bagel with house-cured salmon and fried capers at Cutty's. Bagels are only on Fridays and Saturdays. Got there about 9:05. Line to the door. Only raisin bagels left by the time I left at 9:40!

Man, is Cutty's good at marketing and scarcity! But that's probably for another discussion.

Recipe for Clear Flour-like Hamentaschen?

I wondered if this post would be moved there (HCB), but unfortunately I don't remember enough details to describe them other than buttery and cookie like. I'll have to look at the allrecipe.com one.

Pretzel salt in Greater Boston

Kupels does a salt bagel. So does Cutty's. Since they're so hard to find, I just shake salt over the cream cheese and tomato on my plain/onion bagels. Sigh.

Wax candy wrappers?

New discovery: they stuck to Stop & Shop brand cheap liners. They did NOT stick to the heavier fancy cupcake liners from TJ Maxx. :)

They (caramels) really won't stick to cupcake papers? I really like the precut idea for the caramels currently cooling on my dining room table!

Clementines that actually taste good

Thanks for the tip. The satsumas at WF last week were SO much better than the clementines I've been getting.

Baked Goods as Gifts For Teachers, Etc.

When I bake, I do frequently find myself thinking how much cheaper it would be to buy the same (albeit usually inferior) thing instead. I missed the $2.50/lb sale on Land O' Lakes butter this year. :( And no access to Restaurant Depot. And I don't think Jacques Torres chocolate feves ever go on sale.
