Apple cider donuts?

We LOVE Cider Hill. Glad you finally got to try them OC. I didn't understand cider donut love until I had theirs. Also really like the apple and peach picking there.

We tried Shelburne Farms this year, because we now have a toddler, but I think we'll be going back to Cider Hill from now on. There was also a much longer donut wait at Shelburne, but it could also be because the day before had crappy, rainy weather, so everyone was out the Sunday we were there.

Onion ring rec

Wild Willy's are #3, with well-cooked onions.

ANYTHING would be a huge improvement. And I like diners.

Onion ring rec

Wild Willy's in Watertown has solid burgers (I'm partial to the Annie Oakley on a grassfed burger), beer, and usually fabulous onion rings (many, many visits and only 1 off order of them). It is a family place (which is why we go there), so not sure how that would factor in for you, but there are some more isolated tables. I do love their onion rings, so that's why I'm recommending WW.

They also have the BEST (tart!) raspberry lime rickeys.

Best veggie burgers in Boston?

We had a great one at Root about a year ago. We've bee meaningto get back, but haven't made it yet. Hopefully it's still good.

Fresh Mozzarella

I find Maple Brook Farms fresh mozzarella to be way too salty. I prefer Naragansett (I think that's the one), which they (WF) may only have when it's on sale. It's sweeter and very tender.

Buy a Chicken Pot pie or 8

I really like Ken's Kickin' Chicken pot pies. MUCH tastier than Harrow's. They do seem to take forever to bake, though so tasty we're willing to wait. And wait.

I think we preferred the one with stuffing. Yummy shepherd's (really cottage) pie too.

Where to Buy Sour Cherries in Boston

Just got quarts of fresh tart NY cherries at Stop and Shop in Brookline today for $4.99/qt. They look good from the outside (haven't opened them up since I just got home and wanted to share the good news).

Horrible box of good looking ataulfo mangoes from H mart. What gives?

I agree about the quality of atualfos this year. Such a disappointment. In the past, they've been so much better than the others normally available.

Who has great tart raspberry lime rickeys?

Not counting the lime shortage which is affecting some places now, who has a tart limey raspberry lime rickey? I LOVE the ones at Wild Willy's. Deluxe Town Diner & the Brookline Spa need more lime juice, but at least don't use Sprite like I once got in Newburyport. Now that winter might possibly be over, I'm starting to think more of icy refreshments...

Brookline Spa re-opening

Much fancier. Smaller menu. The food seemed pretty similar, but I think my husband wanted to cry when they didn't have Italian sausage subs. He was not consoled by the cheese steak (although I thought it was similar to the old cheese steak). The old spinach salad was also good and is no longer available. The buffalo pizza seemed the same to me. The raspberry lime rickey needed more lime and less raspberry syrup, but I never got it at the old spa. On the other hand, NOBODY's RLR compares to the sour magic of Wild Willy's (hope the limes return soon!).

Which packaging scam annoys you the most

At the grocery store yesterday, I noticed the 1 pound/aka 3/4 pound packages of coffee are now down to 10 oz. Grrr.

When food is wrongly named....

Boston Cream Pie!!! CLEARLY NOT a pie. We always wonder if we should allow it at our pie party. No one has ever tried to push this boundary yet.

NY-style chopped liver with schmaltz?

In case anyone is looking, the Butcherie has small containers of schmaltz already rendered. It has dehydrated onions and BHT in it. I decided to just buy thighs and make my own so I could put the onions in and get some grieven chunks.

NY-style chopped liver with schmaltz?

Schmaltz and grieven (my mom's word) made with onion were in my mom's chopped liver (oh how I miss it). And ARE still integral to her matzo balls & potato kugel.

Since I'm doing my own Seder this year, does anyone know anywhere I can buy 1) premade schmaltz & greiven/gribenes with onions (preferred)? or 2) a tub of raw (ideally kosher) chicken fat to make my own? Thanks!

2 oz glass spice jars with sifter tops

I suspected China Fair was my best bet. Time to call them. Thanks everyone!

2 oz glass spice jars with sifter tops

Why would I be offended OC? The company said the top is close to airtight, but not completely. Sounds good enough to me for my spice use. Whenever I worry about my spices, I think about how long spices used to travel and what the conditions must have been like. Mine HAVE to be starting out much fresher.

These are for my spices (to try to fit my bulk purchases into my tiny spice drawer). It's true that I do scoop a lot of the time, but I do cheat a lot and shake and eyeball. My Penzey's spices frequently have the shaker top under underneath the lid, and a one piece would be so much easier, even if I do have to remove it to scoop.

Best canned soups?

Not Trader Joe's. All of the ones I've tried are AWFUL. Maybe Progresso?

2 oz glass spice jars with sifter tops

Does anyone know where I can find about 60 two oz (short) glass spice jars with sifter tops locally? China Fair? I'm in Brookline. I'm not in a rush, but local would be nice. On the other hand, I found them online for only $0.73 each with tops, which is probably hard to beat.

Like these: http://www.containerandpackaging.com/...
or the small jars from Penzey's. Or square/rectangular should work too, but they need to be short (about 2 inches tall).

Thanks!

Frozen Sour Cherries?

I just bought them last week at Bazaar in Brookline at 1432 Beacon St. They're in the freezer on the back wall (parallel to Beacon St.) in clear rectangular plastic containers. Made a great sour cherry pie for Pi Day (and so much easier than pitting my own fresh ones!).

Columbus oh recommendations

2 downtown lunch ideas: Katzinger's Deli (German Village) and North Star Cafe (Short North), which has a truly amazing (even for carnivores) veggie burger. There's also a North Star just south of Worthington in North Clintonville. If you're into coffee, Mission Coffee in the Short North is a place I make a point to go when I'm in town.

The North Market (not on Mondays) has a lot of great options too.

I'll leave dinner recommendations to folks who know the area better (I've been away for a few years.
And Pistacia Vera is a fantastic bakery in German Village, which is definitely worth a trip (just a few blocks from Katzinger's).

Agreed. I use Trader Joe's full fat Greek yogurt for sour cream all the time. It's wonderful!

Baking when sick?

I'd like to bake cookies today (I have a babysitter!!), but I have a cold and a slightly scratchy throat. Would my cookies make people sick if I take care to wash a lot and don't cough or sneeze on anything? Thanks!
