dinners in Aurora, CO

Any recommendations for dinners within a 10-15 minute drive of the Children's Hospital in Aurora, CO? We like all types of food and don't need much atmosphere - just a break from the hospital cafeteria! Had a great meal last night at the Nile restaurant on Havana and Jewell and would love similar finds. $10-15 per entree is ideal, but more is feasible. Quick service would be a bonus.

Thanks!

flagstaff - what would you change on this dining itinerary?

We used to live in Flagstaff and are headed back there next week after a couple of years away. We want to hit some old favorites, but are interested in trying new restaurants that we might not know about, too. We'll have our 21-month old along, so fine dining isn't really an option.

Here's what we're thinking of:
Martanne's - green chilequiles. You really wouldn't be able to talk us out of this one.
Big Foot - Satchmo's is new since we lived there. Can anyone compare the two?
Pato Thai - We thought this was the best of the bunch (Dara/Racha/etc.) when we lived there, but wouldn't mind hearing if it has been surpassed.
Tacos Los Altos - Still delicious? Homemade horchata?
Criollo Latin Kitchen - this one will be new to us, but is recommended by a friend.

Based on this list you can probably tell our budget. We live in a very small town now with few food options, so any type of flavors will be exciting for us. What are we missing?

Thanks!

restaurants that deliver in Salt Lake City - Cottonwood Heights area

Thanks enbell. So far none of these seem to have a gift certificate option, but I haven't called all of them yet. I appreciate the leads!

restaurants that deliver in Salt Lake City - Cottonwood Heights area

Hi all,

I'm looking for tasty restaurants that deliver (and hopefully have gift certificates) in the Cottonwood Heights area (greater SLC). We have a friend who just went through surgery, and I would like to send her family a gift certificate that they can use for one of those hectic days between doctor's appointments, physical therapy, etc. Unfortunately, I'm not having any luck with internet searching.

I know that this family has ordered Indian and Chinese food before for delivery. They are vegetarian, and one of them prefers mild (not spicy) foods. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations!

5 day conference at Sheraton on Canal St.

Thanks Littleman.

5 day conference at Sheraton on Canal St.

I will be in New Orleans for five days March 14-18 for a conference at the Sheraton on Canal Street, where I will also be staying at night. I will not have a car. I've been lurking for a while on the board and have gotten lots of ideas, but I'm concerned about wait times. What are some options for quick, inexpensive breakfasts ($10 or less) and lunches ($15 or less) near my conference( I have some guesses below)? How long will it take me to walk to the following?

Breakfasts - mostly interested in the coffee and pastry types of places, maybe some homemade granola:
Cafe Beignet
CC's Community Coffeehouse
Croissant d'Or

Lunches:
Bennachin
Central Grocery
Coop's
Verti Mart

I also hope to have one leisurely lunch day, which I plan to spend at August. Will I need reservations for lunch?

For dinners, I am a little lost because so many of the recommendations are pretty expensive for my budget. For my "splurge" nights, I am planning on visiting Cochon and possibly Brightson's (although that would require a cab ride, I believe). Cheaper recommendations ($20 or less)?

Also, if I wanted to have a night out, the Rebirth Brass Band at the Maple Leaf Bar on Tuesday night has been recommended to me. Looks like this would also be a cab ride, yes? Dinner recommendations for that area? My other thought for this is whatever is playing at the Preservation Hall some night.

Thanks so much! I get the impression that it will hard for me to eat any bad food while visiting, and I'm looking forward to. I haven't made reservations yet, but I'm hoping you all will be too tuckered from Mardi Gras to go out much next week.

awash in spinach mustard

Thanks!

awash in spinach mustard

Oh, yum. Somehow this seems like it can't possibly be healthy, whether it's made with greens or not.

awash in spinach mustard

Thanks. We are very rural, so I can't think of a place to get Indian chile powder within a four hour radius!

awash in spinach mustard

Mmmm, this sounds delicious. Is the chile powder like a New Mexico chile powder, or is it dried ground chiles (like cayenne)?

Baby is still on a liquid diet, so I have no idea what he'll eat! But I know several babies that have started out with some pretty bizarre foods - they don't get picky for a year or so.

good food in Moab?

Center Cafe has closed its doors.

awash in spinach mustard

Our CSA pickup this week included a giant bag of spinach mustard - a hybrid green that has just a little bit of bite, but is mild enough to eat raw. We've been stirfrying it and adding it to salads, but there is no way we will eat all of it before it goes bad. Any suggestions for consuming, freezing or preserving, or processing our greens into baby food?

cheap, fast lunches near Lloyd Center, Portland

Back from Portland. Sadly, due to work and social obligations I mostly had mediocre to downright terrible food. It was a food tragedy. The bright spots....
Food carts at 9th and Alder:
Huong's Vietnamese - huge portions loaded with veggies for my veggie friends. Went there with five people. We all ordered different dishes and were all mightily pleased.
Aybla Mediterranean Grill - delectable lamb gyro with feta.

Food carts I liked less:
Samurai Bento - quality food, but with all the fresh ingredients around, I was sorry I didn't go for something else (or back to Huong's).
India Chaat House - for me, this one was nothing special. Again, maybe I was too excited about all the fresh ingredients elsewhere. I had their lunch special, and the main dish (sweet potato and peas) seemed to be cooked down to mush.

A great treat: Sahagun's hot chocolate. If they made this illegal, folks would sell their kidneys for it.

Good breakfast: Tin Shed. Went with the family and everyone had something different. All were pleased, including picky father-in-law who ordered plain toast with a fried egg (not on the menu). Humongous portions. Would be happy to see this place cut the portion size and the price a little bit, but I know that's now a good way to make money.

Pretty good around the Lloyd Center: Milo's Cafe. I was surprised by the prices though, which were higher than what I would have expected for a place that our B&B owner described as a diner. Easy to drop $20 on a dinner here. All other places I went around Lloyd Center were utterly forgettable.

Fuller's restaurant in downtown Portland: good straight up eggs and bacon kind of place with yummy homemade bread for the toast. Nothing fancy, but tasty and didn't require a 45 minute wait on a Sunday morning.

I won't even bother to mention all the bad restaurants I had suffered through. I do have to make a mention of our one "fancy" night, which was at Fife. We forewent more interesting options like Toro Bravo, Tabla, le Pigeon, etc. so that the inlaws could join us. However, this was a real disappointment for me. I had the lamb chops with roasted brussel sprouts and fennel. I thought the vegetables were oversalted. I should have ordered the lamb medium rare rather than just rare, as it was completely raw at the bone. I can't give a fair review I guess, because other things conspired to make this a fairly miserable meal. But I would hope for a little more imagination on the plate, rather than just a meat-and-potatoes experience. This one was also recommended by our B&B owner and was selected mainly to please the palate of my inlaws. Still, I wouldn't go here again, even if craving a good, straight-forward, American-style dinner.

Thanks Chowhounders for all your advice. Wish I could have tried more of them!

Are there any Klamath Falls Hounds out there?

I can't speak to either of the restaurants that you suggest, but I will say that the Thai restaurant downtown (Thai Orchid I believe) is quite serviceable. My inlaws live in KF, and I would be happy to eat there again.

Actually I rechecked my schedule, and we have 1.5 hours for lunch! Hooray! Would this possible give me enough time for a sit down anywhere? Karam?

Really, though, I think I can be pretty happy with food carts.

Thanks, Leonardo, for giving me the heads up on the metro lines and for more dinner recommendations. I do love Ethiopian, although I think it's more fun with a crowd.

Tanuki and Biwa - both are non-sushi oriented Japanese, yes? With Tanuki being the cheaper option?

cheap, fast lunches near Lloyd Center, Portland

If this helps - I would love to eat as a wide a variety of cuisines as I can while in town. For my not-rushed, sans-inlaw nights, I'm thinking about Toro Bravo, Tabla, Pok Pok, Lucky Strike, Tanuki, Apizza Scholl's.....

Pok Pok looks like it's too far for lunch?

cheap, fast lunches near Lloyd Center, Portland

I'm looking for yummy, cheap, fast lunches near the Lloyd Center. I'll also need some quick dinners a couple of nights. I need to be out and back to the conference center in about an hour. I had hoped to hit the Portland food cart scene, but even that looks like it may be too much transit time. I prefer almost any type of ethnic food to American-style food, and I'm not particularly interested in sushi or beer. Any suggestions?

Feedback on these possibilities - will I be able to make it there and back?

Thanks all. I'm feeling a little more cheerful about my options!

diners and comfort food in Portland

After perusing the board, my mouth is watering at all the delicious picks for Portland. However, we will be spending some time with my in-laws, and I'm looking for recommendations for places that we can go with them. The catch - my father-in-law will only eat very boring, bland food. Pepper in his hamburger? No way! Beer = Coor's. Mustard = Heinz. You get the picture.

So, I'm hoping you can recommend places that will fulfill his need for very bland food, while hopefully allowing me to enjoy my dinner as well. We have managed to eat at good restaurants that will specially prepare his food without spices, but generally you have to go fairly high end to get that sort of attention, and we will mostly be on a low budget (say $20 or less for an entree).
We will be more or less downtown. They are staying near the university, and we are near the Lloyd Center. Somewhere that is easily accessible via public transit would be a bonus.

Thanks! I will probably put up a post about my own food questions, but I think this is the trickiest question I have!

moderately priced in Lakewood, CO

Last night in town and I went to Virgilio's. Very tasty, and a friendly counter crowd that made it easy to find someone to chat with during dinner.

moderately priced in Lakewood, CO

Dinner tonight was New Saigon on Federal near Alameda. Yum! It has an extensive menu, with lots of dishes I had never heard of before. We tried pho, a seafood dish, and a vegetable sour soup. All of them were very tasty, and pretty cheap too.

moderately priced in Lakewood, CO

Yup, That's where I'm at. We arrived today and ate at Namaste in a strip mall off of Wadworth. It was delicious and a good value. We ordered a combination plate for 2 that came with chappati, samosas, basmati rice, naan, tandoori chicken, lamb curry, shrimp masala, dal, saag paneer, and kheer - all for less than $30. We both took away plenty for a meal tomorrow.

I've got five more dinners to eat, so more recommendations are welcome!

moderately priced in Lakewood, CO

Hmmm.. Lakewood doesn't exactly sound like a food wonderland. Too bad.

PS - At least some of the nights I will be dining with someone who prefers vegetarian cuisine.

moderately priced in Lakewood, CO

I will be at a training in Lakewood, CO for one week, staying near 7400 W. Mansfield. I am looking for good, ethnic restaurants in the $15-20 range and a good coffee shop and bakery. I would love to find good Mexican, New Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, dim sum... or any recommendations you have really for a place that shouldn't be missed.
Since I don't know the Denver area, please let me know if you recommend a place that's a bit of a drive. We will have a car available, put probably wouldn't want to go more than 20 minutes or so.
Thanks!

restaurants in Scottsdale

I ordered the pho with beef brisket. The broth, which is generally the highlight of the soup for me, was thin and lacked flavor. The noodles were skinny rather than being the wide noodle I am accustomed to (not a big deal for flavor, but made me wonder why). The beef slices had the shiny, iridescent color of old meat. It was also served with only a small sprig of basil.

My party also ordered spring rolls, which I thought were fine but nothing special. The dipping sauce was quite salty and frankly tasted like it was straight from a bottle.

While my companions enjoyed their meals, everyone commented on how much better our meal the previous night at The Blue Nile had been. I guess I would say The Noodle Ranch was ok, but since I get to eat ethnic food so seldom, I was disproportionately disappointed.
