How does Houston cool off??

If you want to be adventurous, you might go get shaved ice in chinatown. Star Snow Ice off Bellaire has it. Its snowcone -like ice, in a bowl with all sorts of toppings, from fruit, pudding to red beans.

Looking for candied ginger

Any of the asian markets should have it as well. You just have to search for it, its sometimes by the asian 'candies'.

FYI CHEAP Oysters on the shell

Its the time of year when I start craving raw oysters and wanting some cheap. There is a hole in the wall place on the NW side of town, Jersey Village area that is selling them for $5.25 a dozen!

It used to be called Captain Rudy's Seafood Grill, but has been renamed to, I believe, USA Seafood. Its located at 13250 FM 529 Rd, Houston and the number is 713.466.5299

Just thought I would pass this on.

We had planned on going to Stella

I drive 350 miles ONE WAY from Houston every chance I get to eat at Stella. I've never been disappointed with the food, but have had spotty service.. but didnt care, because I enjoyed the food.

So, I would never pass up Stella, but thats just me.

Best Dim Sum in Houston

I'm not sure why so many people recommend Kim Son in Stafford.. my husband and I have gone twice and didnt like it at all. We actually just left after 2 dishes the last visit. My husband chalked it up to his being Chinese. He also cant stand the dim sum at the Kim Son on Bellaire.
Our favorites are Fung's and Golden Palace.

What to do in Houston? (not the obvious?)

I have to second the Phoenician Market on Westheimer.. but also dont miss our HUGE Chinatown area, out west on Bellaire. You could have dim sum at Fung's Kitchen (off the SW Fwy), hot pot at Sinh-Sinh, Taiwanese Beef Noodle at Shandong Noodle Snack, Bubble Tea at Star Snow Ice... amazing french style desserts at Jungle Cafe, cheap duck noodle soup at Hong Kong Cafe.

(I'm sorry, I'm biased towards the chinese food)

[Houston] Best Of List

You might like Star Snow Ice on Bellaire better for Bubble Tea.

and I have to vote Sushi Jin on Memorial for best sushi!

I second the Hugo's nomination.

Houston - PEKING DUCK

Peking Cuisine is not really the best, but it IS the cheapest. Its a good deal, but the duck is just so-so. Confucious on Bellaire, at Gessner (in the shopping center with Fiesta) is great.

Houston late night dining

House of Pies, is just past Fountainview, if you get to Hillcroft you have gone too far.

There is some great late night dining in the Chinatown area, out West on Bellaire Blvd at Beltway 8. The most simple directions would be to take Westheimer west to Gessner, turn left (south) follow for several miles and turn right on Bellaire. Keep driving until you see something that strikes your interest. Tan-Tan is open at least until 3-4. Bodard Bistro, ect.

Mama's Cafe is also on Westheimer, just before the House of Pies, (its on the left hand side, if you are headed west). They are open pretty late as well

Anniversary dinner in downtown Orlando?

Any suggestions for a posh night out for my husband and I in downtown Orlando?

Also, is there anything resembling a chinatown besides Epcot? Best vietnamese to be had?

I appreciate any and all suggestions!

Soma - Houston

We went with a group the other week. We made a reservation for six people, for 7 pm. When we arrived, our reservation was nowhere to be found. (We had even specifically requested a certain server). The staff tried to shove us into a 4 person booth with a chair on the end. That didnt work, so they shoved us into another somewhat larger booth.

I'm sure that the copied menu pages with DRAFT stamped on them was meant to be edgy or whatever, but it really just looked lazy and unorganized, especially in view of how the rest of the evening shaped up.

The orders were lost, a tray of drinks spilled on the table and laps. It took us nearly three hours to eat. We had to get up and get our own silverware. The manager never came by once. We cancelled half our order.

The sushi was served with OLD tasteless, nearly brown, ginger. The fish was so-so fresh. Not as good as I would have expected, it was obvious that they had gotten their fish order on Thursday (it was Saturday). But like the above post, it was mediocre over all.

Now, the food, when we did get some, was good and interesting. However the service was so incredibly bad that it completely took away from it.

One of my dining companions owns several restaurants in the area and took the opportunity to use the experience as a teaching lesson for his own waitstaff, a very strong lesson in what NOT to do.

Dining in Aberdeen?

I realize that this is pretty broad, but can I get any recommendations for dining in Aberdeen? Any type of food, any price range. My husband will be there on business next week and I'd like to see that he is well fed.

Thanks!

Good Dumplings in Houston??

Lai Lai is not good, in my opinion. And its disgusting in my China-born husband's opinion.

Fu-Fu was a good recommedation. Sichuan Cuisine has some good ones too. I also second Xiong. (My husband likes Fu-Fu best)

I adore Stella.. I would certainly go there long before I would go to Delmonico's. I like Stella's small and romantic atmosphere too.

Thanks!

reasonable prices and good food--suggestions

Eleven79 can be slightly more expensive, but not too much more. Its an incredible italian place hidden in the warehouse district. Its certainly not touristy.

Best 'Entertaining high-brow clients' Place in NOLA?

I have to vote for Stella as well. I was just there friday night, for the second time in three years and its still just amazing. I also vote for the tasting menu. (But maybe pass on the wine pairing, as the other tables that had ordered it were completely sloshed. One lady at an adjoining table kept sticking her fork in her mouth an imitating a walrus, hahah)

The only authentic chinese food that i know in that area is at my house.. but besides THAT... and I know you were asking for Chinese.. but.. there is a decent vietnamese place, Pho Bong Sen at Jones and 1960.

shabu shabu and sukiyaki in houston?

I have to disagree with the chinese people in Houston not wanting to do hot pot anywhere but home... my husband and our family and friends are always looking for a good place for hot pot (tan tan is not an option, they served us bowls of cockroaches, not once.. but TWICE.. in the same night). The hot pot buffet at kim son has been very popular.

Hou. Sandong Noodle New Owners or What?

What is with the serious drop in quality at Sandong Noodle since they moved to the new location? New owners or penny pinching? Their beef noodle soup used to be hard to beat, and now its just ugh.

Southwest Houston

You are not that far from our chinatown area. There are so many great and interesting places to eat. I would recommend taking the SW Freeway S to the Sam Houston tollway North (I think it says north on that side of town, please hounds, correct me). Exit Bellaire and go to the right for mostly chinese food (I recommend Sandong Noodle House or One Dragon in Di Ho Plaza) or go to the left for mostly Vietnamese.
