Rethinking Babbo
Actually if you do a la carte, you can still request wine pairings. I've done that quite a few times, and they were always happy to do that.
Whiskey please
I go to Highlands and St Andrew's quite a bit, have been to Brandy Library only twice. I know BL has multiple tasting flight options, all very good. the other 2 don't have tasting flights on the menu, but maybe you can ask them. If you're interested in different kinds of whiskey, BL is excellent, but if you're leaning towards scotches, I'd recommend the other 2. Their prices are a lot more reasonable than BL.
Whiskey please
Your description of the bartenders at the Manhattan DBA cannot be more true.
Peasant recommendations
I like their cuttlefish baked in spicy tomato sauce. In the summer sometimes they have the pasta dish with rabbit and fava beans, it's pretty amazing and not to be missed.
I have never been impressed with their desserts, but they have nice dessert wines by the glass if you want something sweet.
Anyone been to Canoe Restaurant in Toronto? [moved from Manhattan board]
exactly. I also don't trust Michelin for NYC. For Europe, the guides are reliable. For NYC, they are hit and miss. And for Asia they are completely useless.
In any case, I went back to Black Hoof on Monday (they started closing after Tuesday) and try the rest of the menu, Amazing!!!!! I also tried Foxley, love the ceviche but blah about everything else on the menu. I also went to a Vietnamese and a Thai restaurant, pretty good, but my quest for true Northern Vietnamese food goes on.

Boston Chowhound looking for guidance
I just came back from Toronto. I ended up eating dinner at Black Hoof twice during our 4-day trip because we wanted to try more dishes on the menu. Everything we had was really outstanding. If you're not squeamish, try the raw horse sandwich. I can't even think of a place even close to this in NYC. Note: cash only, American debit cards don't work here, and no credit card.
On a lighter side, Foxley is really great for ceviche. I wasn't too impressed with the other dishes, but loved all their ceviche.

Thank you very much for your replies. I decided to cancel Canoe and take my chances at more casual places. I've been to Black Hoof twice already in 3 days!
I've been to both EMP and JG, and even without knowing much about Canoe I have to say I agree with SkylineR33. You can't really get any better deal than lunch at those 2 places.

Hi all,
This is wrong location for the post, but I would really appreciate a NY chowhounder's perspective on Canoe Restaurant of Toronto. Good? Great? Not worth the money? This is one of the most recommended restaurants in Toronto along side with the Portuguese restaurant Chiado, which I went to yesterday and was quite disappointed. Nowhere near as good as Aldea, but a lot more expensive.
Anyway, thanks in advance.
BYO Wine Reccomendation for Kuma Inn?
I often bring a bottle (or 2) of sake. Beer works too. Hitachino Nest anyone?
NY foodie coming to New Orleans looking for CANT miss places- Help me with my itinerary please
Hi steakrules85, fellow NY chowhounder here. I've been down to NO many times, and here's my $0.02: Avoid Galatoire's. I went there twice, and that was twice too many. The place is loud, waiters are rude, and the food is absolutely horrible. Another point against them: they insist gents wearing jacket. My boyfriend showed up in a classic Ascot Chang blazer, and the host asked "Is that a jacket?"
Cannot be missed, from what you said you liked in NY: Cochon.
Reliable Knife Sharpener
I take mine to Korin too. The service quality is very good, and turnaround is about 2 weeks.
Korin also has knife sharpening demonstration on weekends.
Chanterelle shutters
I don't post on here very much, so maybe my experience is not relevant to your first paragraph. To me Chanterelle was the perfect classic and classy restaurant. Eating there was like being invited to someone's home, the food was always excellent, the setting is elegant, and the staff members made you feel comfortable and well, loved. For some reason it was under the radar (eg not mentioned on chowhound a lot) which I loved, but in restrospect I wish they had a bit more of the hype some newer restaurants seem to get these days.
Reception in Nolita? Locals help please!
Public has been very popular with wedding receptions lately. I called 4-5 times this summer during weekends and they were closed for weddings.
Chinatown fruit report [Old]
Vietnamese word for them is "na", pronounced exactly as written. There are several kinds, the ones we get in NYC are of the softer, sweeter type. They are soft to the touch and have nice fragrant when ripe. If you happen to buy green ones, put them in a bowl and cover with uncooked rice, they'll ripen up really fast. Peel the outer skin then break them into chunks, whichever order you like.
Fun note: I used to wash the black seeds and play mancala with them.
Need A Tea STORE...
McNulty Tea on Christopher between Bedford and Bleeker. Their selection is mostly Chinese, but they have some nice Japanese and English teas available.
best bo bun in chinatown?
Are you looking for bun bo with broth or the dry bun bo with dipping sauce and crushed peanuts?
The first kind I don't have a recommendation. For the 2nd kind I like Pho Viet Huong.
How "bad" is the Alinea wine list?
:))) when was your reservation? Upstairs/downstairs? Maybe we sat next to each other.
How "bad" is the Alinea wine list?
I just got back from Chicago. Just want to say thank you all for your info. We did the tour menu and wine pairing. 2 things I would like to comment on. First, the wine pairing was excellent. All choices really complimented their respective courses. Second, I thought the wine list was pretty reasonable with quite a few bottles under $100, and a lot of excellent wines around $150 - 200. Still, I was very glad I did the pairing. Basically didn't eat breakfast and lunch the next day, but hey, you don't do this very often. :)))
Where to Buy Marinara Sauce in Little Italy (Manhattan)
I forgot about Joe's, shame on me! yes that's a great place to get mozzarella. And at no time it's nearly as crowded as DiPalo's.
Where to Buy Marinara Sauce in Little Italy (Manhattan)
I do too. To change it up a little, add a splash of red wine while heating it up, delicious!
Where to Buy Marinara Sauce in Little Italy (Manhattan)
:)))) I hear you. I often take a number, run to Piemonte to get sauce and then run back to DiPalo's to get cheeses.
Piemonte doesn't make fresh mozzarella at all. They are strictly sauces and pastas in all shapes and sizes. I've only run in and out of Rafferto for ravioli, so I'm not sure if they make mozzarella.
Where to Buy Marinara Sauce in Little Italy (Manhattan)
Actually I don't like DiPalo's ravioli and pasta sauce much. I prefer Piemonte, right down the block at Mulberry and Grand. If you want more options and are willing to walk up a bit, Rafferto on Houston between MacDougal and Sullivan has great sauces.
How "bad" is the Alinea wine list?
2 friends ate there last year. I also just put a search into google.
It's hard to pair, but not impossible. I did tastings at Jean George with a white, a red and a sauterne before and it worked out well. But then I guess with 24 courses it's much harder.
Thank you for the info. Oh, and yes, I agree the Spiaggia wine list looks absurd. The 1998 and 1999 Mascarellos for $280 on that list, I get them in restaurants in NY for $110.
Txikito-best tapas in town
I've had just about every dish usually on the menu at Txikito. Most of them are good, especially the Basque canapes (those txitxikis are very addictive). However, I have the same problem as you do, the price. Things add up really fast there. Their wine list is also limited and overpriced. My check always end up over 100 per person. Good, yes, but worth it? probably not.
where can I buy fresh Japanese apricots/Chinese plums?
I've seen Chinese plums before in San Francisco. But have never seen them in NY.

Best NYC Chocolatiers
Agree their chocolate is very good, almost on par with La Maison. However, on several occations I find their store clerks too snooty, especially the ones in the Rock Center store, so I haven't been back in a while.
How "bad" is the Alinea wine list?
Thank you all for the info. Pairing it is, unless the boyfriend says otherwise. :)))
