Cold pork belly, good gammon (SW11)
I don't think Moen's prices are out of line for the calibre of their stuff although admittedly I walk in with sirloin eyes and a sausage budget. Chadwick's is also a great place with very nice and knowledgable people behind the counter (and good sausages too).
The best sausage you ever had
Living in the UK I've had to get used to sausage that can be less than 50 percent meat so I've learned to look at the rather helpful labels for meat content. There are a few brands of British sausage that stand out, most notably Debbie & Andrew's 97%. But until I get home to the States and Werner's Kansas City sausages, I really enjoy just about any butcher's lamb Merguez sausages if I'm going to cook 'em, and as a cold cut I am currently nuts about chorizo made with Iberico Bellota pork.
French regional cuisine in Paris
Well SOMETHING I had there had bleu d'Auvergne in it. Maybe it was the millefeuille ;-)

Yep but the name of the restaurant is sort of the tip-off to the choice of cheese in this case ;-)
Are There No Good, Inexpensive Places In Paris?
I'm a latecomer to the aligot party but my wife and I visited L'Ambassade d'Auvergne last spring and it was quite a show, a bit like a taffy pull (and the spuds were mighty tasty). I totally agree with you about the lentil salad too, fabulous stuff.
French regional cuisine in Paris
My wife and I visited L'Ambassade d'Auvergne this past May and it was unforgettable (in a good way). To the customary annoyance of the maitre d' we showed up sans reservations and so he shunted us to the big round punishment table at the back of the ground floor dining room, where we were sat with a nice couple from Australia and three lovely older Italian ladies who didn't speak a lick of anglais, and we had a great time laughing drinking and eating. I had their celebrated Puy lentil salad for a starter, but it could easily have been the whole meal, thick and hearty with onions and lardons. For my main I had the duck breast and aligot potatoes, which definitely qualifies as dinner and a show as the waiter comes out with a big pot of severely mashed spuds and with a wooden spoon he strrrrrrretches it before your eyes. It was one of the tastiest mashes I've had, crammed with garlic and bleu d'Auvergne cheese. Finished the meal with some tasty fruity eau de vies. It was a great last night in Paris and the rustic decor makes it feel like no other place we've been there.
What's the point of Borough Market? [London]
I'm reminded of the old Yogi Berra quote: "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded." ;-)
I still like it and I'll brave the crowd for certain otherwise unobtainable things, and on the weekdays it's open it's a lot more easily navigable.

Dove's is great and there's also a rather good deli counter at the back of Moen's in Clapham Common, great sandwiches made to order and the rest of the place is like Stringfellow's for carnivores ;-)
suggestions for restaurants serving interesting game dishes in London?
Rules Restaurant (35 Maiden Lane near Covent Garden) is all about game and as venerable an eatery as can be found in London. It lays claim to being London's oldest restaurant (founded in 1798) and has its own game preserve way up in County Durham. Be careful when you eat because you wouldn't want to chip a tooth on an errant piece of shot ;-)

The Case of the Mysterious Vanishing Breakfast Slices
Whenever up up in Merseyside I have breakfast at a little greasy spoon called Reushie in West Derby Village where you get Ulster fry with your full English. I wish I could get it down south; it may be mystery meat but it's crazy-tasty.
Houston bests?
Howdy...my wife and I are headed to Houston over Thanksgiving weekend. We'll have a couple of opportunities not to eat with the family so I'm looking for some "absolute best" places in town for stuff like:
Chili
Tex-Mex
BBQ
Since we're from Kansas City I don't really HAVE to have BBQ but it'd be nice to do a comparison. We've been to Goode Bros burgers & taqueria down on Kirby before, really kewl place, but I'd like to check out other Tex-Mex places, be they hole-in-the-wall types or more fancy-shmancy. Any suggestions are appreciated.
