Meaty Parts aka Find Me A Good Butcher, Please!

Hi,

So I don't eat pork and try to use beef, goat and lamb as substitutes when I can. However, it's really hard for me to find certain parts of the animal because I don't have a butcher.

For example, I want "plate", the equivalent of pork belly on cows, goats and lambs so I can try making my own bacon at home. Near impossible to get at places like Food Emporium or Whole Foods and the halal butchers in Jackson Heights (I'm Pakistani) have no idea what I'm talking about. I'd also love to get stuff like a goat leg with cleaned skin on so I can try a "pernil" and what not.

Any suggestions are much appreciated, thank you!

Lebanese Cookbook

I'm looking for a good Lebanese (or Middle Eastern) cookbook. I grew up in Dubai and a lot of the "Middle-Eastern" restaurants were Lebanese. The food was very delicious and I've managed to come close to replicating many recipes. However, I'd like to make my food truly authentic. So does anyone know of good cookbooks where the recipes are very close to homemade? Long preparation, ingredient lists and complicated methods don't scare me :)

South Street Seaport Fish Market to the Bronx Information

Hi,

So I know the Seaport used to have a great fish market and now it's up in the Bronx. I heard they open ridiculously early, like at 2am. I was wondering, is there any easy public transportation that can take us up there? Also, is it open to the public wanting to peruse the market and make a few purchases?

Any help is much appreciated, thank you!

Finding Fixers

Hi,

I was wondering how to find a "fixer" when I travel. Someone who can take me to local places to eat instead of touristy stuff and still knows about local landmarks. Think of the people who help Anthony Bourdain on No Reservations. Should I try finding one before I go or find one when I get to wherever I'm going. This is for travel in general, no particular destinations in mind (yet).

Thanks!

Non-Pork Ramen (And Maybe Curry)

Hi,

I was wondering if there were any good ramen spots in NYC that use non-pork broth that I could try. Also, as a side-note, any good Japanese curry spots that use a non-pork base as well? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Family Style Italian

Just saw Throwdown with Bobby Flay and the episode was about Rao's. It got me craving a family style Italian restaurant now. Seeing all the posts on how impossible it is to get into Rao's, what are the good family style Italian restos in the city or out? I've been to Carmine's and Tony Di Napoli's, I know they're touristy but I liked them. What else is out there?

(I've posted something similar on the Manhattan boards but want to see what's out in the boroughs as well. And before anyone starts on it, yes, I know I won't get Babbo or Scarpetta type Italian. Frankly, I'm not looking for that type in this case either.)

Thanks in advance!

I've been to Babbo and plan to go to Scarpetta soon as well. I never was going to compare Tony's to those type of restaurants. I mean, they're both Italian but it's still like comparing apples to oranges.

I may try Sambuca I guess. Any suggestions off island?

Christmas Meal in NYC

Hi,

My sis is visiting from 12/22 to 1/2 with her friend from England. I want to take them out to a nice meal for Christmas (mainly because I'm going to be too lazy to cook, haha). The only restrictions we have are no pork and my sister doesn't eat seafood. It'd be great if there was a nice prix-fixe available. Price wouldn't be an issue unless you start getting astronomical ($300+ for three people).

Thanks!

Need A Tea STORE...

Hi,

On a recent trip to LA found a great tea store a block or two off of Rodeo Drive. It had every type of tea imaginable, in loose leaf form, in giant bins that you could buy by weight. They had certain teas already bagged. A macha section with appropiate accessories. Also, they had a bunch of accessories in general.

The attendant was from NYC so I asked if he knew of a similar store here and he couldn't think of any beyond some that specialized in green tea, macha or were more like cafes.

I need help, do you guys know of any stores in Manhattan like that please? Thanks!

Flushing Hot Pot

Hey,

I keep hearing about all you can eat Hot Pot places in Flushing, any suggestions? I don't eat pork and that's the only restriction I have, I love SPICY FOOD!!! Also, any places that might have veg or seafood broth for my family would be great. But again, I have no restrictions except no pork and no bad food =P

Haha, thanks!

Le Bernardin

So taking my family (parents and sis) to Le Bernardin for dinner. We've all never been before and would love some suggestions. My sis hates seafood so she'll probably be getting the vegetarian or chicken stuff. Although she is not averse to a good filet of sea bass.

Basically, any suggestions for Le Bernardin virgins?

Thanks!!!

Arabic Roasted Goat

Hey,

Does anyone know if there's a restaurant that serves whole roasted goat on top of rice? It's a traditional dish from the Middle East, I think it's called Ouzi... I used to have it all the time back home in Dubai but can't seem to find it here. I'm not necessarily looking for the whole goat, but if it's prepared that way and then they sell individual portions, that would be great.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Red Hook Ball Fields Latino Food

Hi,

I've been trying to find how to get to the Red Hook Latino street vendors. I know this might be the last summer they are there so I want to make sure I experience them. I keep getting articles ABOUT them and just pointing to the ball fields. Is there an address (even something close by) that I can just enter into www.hopstop.com and get there from Manhattan?

Any help is appreciated, thank you!
