White wine for wedding reception recommendations? [moved from Ontario board]
My go-to white when cost is an issue is an Argentinian Pinot Grigio by Argento. I believe it runs for $8.95 at the LCBO -- a bargain for this wine!
Matching with Asti Spumante
Try something with a dominant sweet citrus in it like an orange or lemon poppy seed cake. I cautiously recommend a lemon merigue pie, although it may bring out a sour taste to the pie? I seem to recall it tasting well with maple-glazed grilled pineapple. A favorite summer drink for me is to add crushed ice and chopped oranges and grapefruit to a glass of Asti Spumante from Martini (formerly and Rossi) -- very refreshing!
Canadian ice wine
From my experiences, when you cellar ice wine, the taste of the wine can change dramatically over time. This link http://www.winesofcanada.com/icewine.html should help you out with which grape varieties are best for cellaring.
I've been impressed with some of the Jackson Triggs ice wines www.jacksontriggswinery.com
There is also an excellent Ice Cuvee from Peller estates www.peller.com -- they take a sparkling wine and add ice wine to it.
Best breakfast in Guelph?
My friend, you may be out of luck...the two popular spots in Guelph for breakfast are Eggcetera (didn't know it was a chain) and Angel's Diner (also a chain). In the past, I would have suggested Latino's for breakfast, but they aren't what they used to be *tear*. Squirrel Tooth Alice's serves breakfast that is ok, but I haven't been there in over a year so I'm not qualified to boast about it. I've heard that Doug's Place (downtown on Carden) and Goody's (on Woodlawn) have breakfast but I've never been. The Holiday Inn has weekend brunch (does that qualify as a chain?) and I'm sure most of the other hotels offer something as well. I hope someone else out there has better news...
Best Rugelach in GTA
Kiva's on Steeles near Bathurst makes rugelach...can't compare them to anywhere else as they are the only ones I've ever indulged in.
