Petite Shell

I'm born and bred in the Bronx...moved to NJ in 1989...but I still consider myself a NY gal. Sorry.
Try this place. Prices aren't awful, and the food is good.

So sorry! It's on Lexington, corner 85th, in NYC. New place that serves rugelach, croissants, croissant sandwiches and top-of-the-line coffees. There was a small write-up in the NYTimes a few weeks ago. Under the Hashgacha of R' Mehlman. Owner is an Orthodox Jew but there are non-Jewish partners, facilitating Shabbat opening.

They were restocking the display case when we were there...so they DO make more. I'm surprised they were sold out by 3...perhaps they are just beginning to gauge the Saturday night crowd...or didn't expect so much traffic on Shabbat...we spoke to Rabbi Mehlman today who explained that there is a non-Jewish partner in the enterprise.

Bought one of each flavor of both the petites and the croissants. So far we have tried all the petites and they are delicious...both savory and sweet varieties. Have not tried the larger croissants yet (my eyes are bigger than my stomach). Coffee (I ordered a latte) was terrific as well.
One complaint....people monopolizing tables with their laptops and tepid coffees. It was 1PM...lunchtime...and there is a Starbucks across the street!!! So unfair to patrons who want to sit and have a meal (they offer various sandwich toppings on their croissants).

Report on Kosher in Hawaii

Email the rabbi directly; rabbichaz@gmail.com. We were there a year ago and he was wonderfully accommodating and the food was delicious. We even stayed in Kona for Shabbat and davened and ate at Chabad.

L'estis desserts

I've bought several different L'estis cakes at Fairway and they were all excellent.

Best kosher Jerusalem restaurants -- time for an update

What's the name of this FB group?

As an aside, we love Rozas, thought HaChatzer was pretty good but very expensive, and really, really enjoyed Agas v'Tapuach (Pera e Mela) for dairy.

Wrap-up Question for those of us who eat hand Matza Shmura

We use Satmar. Been happy with it for the last 50 years. Going to try to get a box of Chareidim next year for comparison, but any other time we've tried the others, Satmar has won.

My New Favorite for Passover

I also use that. Couldn't find any patterns I liked this year, but the white is just fine. It also makes fantastic text book covers for the kids...

2014 Kosher June NY/NJ Wedding

Your number is low for this area, and just about the only place I can think of is Keter Torah, in Teaneck, which has an in-house caterer. My bet is that mid-week would get you the lowest price. Can't tell you anything about the liquor situation...but I would assume that is provided by the caterer/hall. Mazal Tov! (I'm making one in April)

Kosher in Italy

We brought back olive oil in tins, well sealed, wrapped in bubble wrap and multiple plastic bags. Bought it at an estate. My husband said it smells like "gan eden." How can you not bring that home?

Jews won't pay for milchigs

I was not at all impressed at my one and only adventure to Sacred Chow. Fake meat, fake cheese...feh. But I was recently at PeaceFood Cafe. YUM. And not a fake Italian item on the menu!

Jews won't pay for milchigs

We ate at Solo Dairy and while the food was phenomenal, the service was not. We normally get very good service when we go to any of the Prime family of restaurants, so we were very disappointed in that part of the meal.
That being said, I'm interested to see what they will do with Chinese food. I'm not sure what "high end" Chinese entails, and I adore Chopstix in Teaneck.
And even though 23 days of chagim have just ended, I'm still looking forward to our next trip to Pardes!

Philadelphia restaurants

You are so right!!! But we will let her come HOME with the train/bus...probably drive her back...as she'll be returning more laden than when she left. As far as the freshman 15 are concerned....you don't know my daughter! She eschews carbs (always wanted to used that word) and loves, loves, loves her veggies. I'm not worried about her gaining weight...more worried about her losing!

Home is Teaneck, a 2 hr drive. She's in Riepe, no kitchen facilities at all. New and confusing dining programs, but TPTB said they can be changed when she figures out her eating habits! With the crazy Yom Tov schedule this year, I have a feeling I'll be driving there quite often over the next few weeks...

Yep, I'm a parent, and she's an engineering student, but undergrad, so housing in the Lower Quad. Drop off went fine, but she already had an even at 4:30, so we left before dinner was even being considered and got home in time to eat here. Oh well, I'm sure there will be other opportunities to chow down in Philly.
BTW...parking was easy...they had spaces set aside for unloading cars but only for a 1 hr max (extendable for slow-pokes).
