Bread Pudding

I broke it into chunks, assembled it, and baked right away. My recipe is quite old and is custardy rather than bready. In other words, it's not a terribly dense product. I once tried cake donuts, but, for me, it was a failure. The doughnuts just crumbled in the egg mixture.

Was the puff pastry warm when you baked the strudel? The dough should be chilled before putting the ready-to-bake dish into the oven.

Curl-your-toes Braised Red Cabbage

My grandmother used to use pieces of sour salt for her sweet and sour cabbage dishes. Haven't seen it available for a number of years. As I recall, it was made by Maneschewitz, and came in a small glass jar. The pieces were in varying sizes, and were irregularly shaped, like rock candy. EarlyBird's recipe is very similar to the one I make today, using cider vinegar.

Is there a good "pork store" in LA?

You may be able to find what you're looking for at a Vallarta market. Google it for a location near you. The chain is Hispanic, and carries many cuts of meat not readily available at regular grocery stores.

How to clean the face of an oven thermometer?

Try making a paste with baking soda and water. Cover the glass face, and let sit for a while. Then scrub it a bit with a Scotchbrite sponge, and wipe clean. It worked great on the inside of my glass oven door.

Suggestions for authentic Mexican dish to please 3rd grade class

How about Mexican hot chocolate? It's easy using Mexican chocolate discs sold in the Hispanic food section of most grocery stores. And kids love it. Just take it to school in a large thermos, and serve in small disposable hot cups. Couldn't be simpler. Check the website for a recipe from the Food Network:.

Easy (yet tasty) mid-week birthday dinner ideas

Or, if you can give up the homemade fried chicken idea, consider meatloaf. It's great with gravy and all the sides mentioned - mashed potatoes, potato salad, mac and cheese, green beans, biscuits and gravy. It can be prepped in advanced and baked off when needed. Simpler than frying anything. Take it easy, and have a wonderful birthday!

Salmon loaf!

If you do a Chowhound search for Jfood's salmon croquettes, you'll find a great recipe. I've only done the croquettes, which are excellent, but you may be able to convert it to a loaf. Patties for 100 sounds pretty labor intensive.

Looking for ideas for a Sunday Supper for 30

I think the taco bar sounds great. If ground beef doesn't thrill you, how about shredded pork, shredded chicken, or shredded beef? With add-ins like cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, green onion, rice, black beans, assorted salsas, and on and on, it's a great meal for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. You can serve warm corn and flour tortillas, rather than crisp shells. And, everything can be done in advance.
