Seeking (another) Group Dinner Rec
Empellon Cocina requires prix fixe for parties of 7 or more.
Seeking (another) Group Dinner Rec
Hmm, Perla... I'm intrigued. Have you been? Looking for a first hand account. What's it like? Just opened a month or two ago, right?
Seeking (another) Group Dinner Rec
We must be on the same wavelength. I spoke to Tertulia about a group dinner the first week they opened and they said mandatory set menu. Ended up hosting the dinner at Fatty Cue W Vill instead.
Never been to Empellon Cocina. I feel the whole group dinner at a Mexican restaurant is a bit played out. Besides, I'm off to Mexico tomorrow so I'll be Mexicaned out by the time I return.
Any other suggestions?
Seeking (another) Group Dinner Rec
10-15 ppl in their late twenties.
Must have a la carte menu.
$40-60pp for food alone.
Looking for a hip(ster) meets sophisticated vibe a la Vandaag or Acme. Sorella also came to mind but would be a bit too cramped for a party that large.
Spoke w Acme, they want to put us in their basement bar area. Have yet to talk to Vandaag, but want more options first.
Where to buy whole suckling pig?
Summer's here! Or so it feels...
Anyone know where in the City or around the City (outer boroughs, hudson valley or lower CT) I can find a suckling pig? Saw a post from '08, wondering if it's still up to date. Also, will they get it spit prepped?
A NY'er in London - Calling all Anglophiles
This seems to happen a lot... While I didn't label the post with a specific price, nor details of what I consider an awesome meal, I think a societal convention has been established within NYC foodie circles that converges to an approximate norm defining both "reasonably priced" and an "awesome meal." And even if there weren't an approximate norm for their definitions, I'd still be interested in hearing individuals interpretation of what an awesome meal at a reasonable price is. Makes for a nice cross-section. Wouldn't you say? The responses so far seem to be pretty spot on for what I'm looking for.
Awesome = Ace or Excellent (for the purpose of this post)
A NY'er in London - Calling all Anglophiles
I've been to London several times a year for the past 7 or 8 years and, as a NY'er, still can't shake the impression that, with the exception of curry, it's nearly impossible to find an awesome meal at a reasonable price. There are no Momofuku's, no Fatty's, no Torrrisi's. Or are there?
Hit me with your best shot. I want your best London hidden gems, from a New Yorker's perspective.
New & Noteworthy in London - Under 40 GBP
Nope, but I'm intrigued. I'll do some digging.
New & Noteworthy in London - Under 40 GBP
I presume by having 3 or 4 ppl calling, you're referring to booking 3 months in advance? Unfortunately, I don't have that luxury. I'll be in London in 2 weeks' time. I'll see if I can snatch up a cancellation for either lunch or dinner.
Anyone have a London recommendation they'd like to share or is the "reasonably priced food" scene still as abysmal as I remember it?
New & Noteworthy in London - Under 40 GBP
About to take my annual trip to London and wondering what's new and excellent for under 40 GBP per person. Whether street cart or fine dining, lay it on me.
And while I'm at it, anyone have a tip or trick for getting into the Fat Duck. Eating there has been a long held dream of mine. Yes, I'm aware it will be a tad more than 40 GBP.
Tromsø - Help please
I can only presume so as it was listed on their printed menu at the restaurant.
Tromsø - Help please
I know this is a bit of a zombie thread, but I was just in Tromso using chowhound for some ideas and scouted out a couple of the recommendations here. Ended up eating at De 4 Roses and it was excellent, for the most part. Would definitely recommend it to any chowhounds looking for a creative take on traditional Norwegian cuisine using local ingredients. Mostly deconstruction and reinterpretation.
Also looked into Arctandria. Didn't eat there, but sounded like the focus was simple & fresh seafood, including a couple options that struck me as controversial as an American such as whale carpaccio.
Cruelty-free Foie Gras
From what I recall of a now distant memory, I did some further digging and found a gourmet site somewhere in Europe that carried it. Pricing with shipping and the exchange rate was a little to rich for my blood so I passed. Never did find it in the US.
If you do find it on this side of the Atlantic, please do let me know.
Food Trucks of Tennessee
What are some of the best?
Am from NYC where it's hard not to be a stone's throw away from a truck at any given moment, and from what I understand, the trend has made its way South. I'm headed to Bonnaroo on Thursday and am told there will be a large assemblage of trucks, probably from all over. Just wondering the best of TN's.
Looking for the best BBQ in Eastern Tennessee!
Exactly the sort of thing I was looking for! Thx
In your opinion, what's the best BBQ in the whole of TN?
Looking for the best BBQ in Eastern Tennessee!
I'm in the same boat as the OP. Tons of great sounding suggestions here, but hard for an outsider like myself to isolate the differences other than location.
If you had to pick two or three that simply can't be missed, what would they be? I'm driving all the way from NYC so location isn't an issue.
Local Oyster Farms
Anyone know of any oyster farms in Long Island that allows visitors?
Chicken Liver Toast
Nope. Not much of a Keith McNally fan. More of a political gripe than anything (and I'm not overly political).
Also a fan of Michael White's chicken liver toast. Was really sad to see Convivio shutter.
Chicken Liver Toast
Tell me about it. I know they get their other meats from Pat Lafrieda. Just not sure about the chicken liver, but I'm dying to find out...

Anyone know where Spotted Pig gets their chicken liver from?

blow-out dinner
Well, I think we found the over-the-top contrarian on the board...
I think I reserved 3 weeks in advance last time I ate there for lunch. Via phone. Not congress. I've been twice and I still feel it's the most special meal in NYC.
best european hot chocolate in New York
Used to be Mariebelle, but sadly they closed their awkward upstairs location on the UES. Now they only have their Soho location.
I am a big fan of LMdC's hot chocolate if I'm forced to pick a second best.
Why do people go to Shun Lee?
NYC is such a transient place, I imagine 95% of people in this City (and on this board) don't remember when the city was more about loyalists frequenting their neighborhood digs than chowhounds seeking out the newest and most exciting. I grew up near Shun Lee East and Chin Chin, and went to Shun Lee West after every performance at Lincoln Center with my family.
I'm generally against paying high prices for good ethnic food since I know it's readily available in NYC much cheaper. But so long as I'm greeted like family at Shun Lee, or with a warm handshake at the door by Jimmy Chin himself, I'm more than happy to uphold my loyalty to these NYC establishments.
Most Impressive Restaurant in Manhattan?
If the decor wasn't favorable to you before the reno, you'll probably feel the same way if you saw it now. I do think the modernist update served to tone things down a bit, but the architecture hasn't changed: coffered ceiling, balustrade, etc.
Personally, I think the new decor is very tasteful. Yep, the dining room is more dressed up than most other dining rooms in NYC, and as a result gives a certain wow factor, but it's dialed back from the stuffiness of many top michelin starred French restaurants over in Europe.
Anyone try Buvette yet?
I was reading about their chocolate mousse and it looks incredible. Can anyone testify about their food?

French Restaurant Recomendations
If you're looking for an element of romance, take a look at Jojo.
If you're willing to waiver a bit from French, personally, I'd recommend Ze Cafe. It's tucked away so not many people know about it, the food is very good, and the restaurant feels cozy. Not too pricey either.
FWIW, I've been to La Mangeoire literally dozens of times - it's a block away from my parents - and have had mixed experiences. My parents love it so I entertain them by going.
Most Impressive Restaurant in Manhattan?
Hah! Nice. If Epcot Center ever updated Japan, Ninja would probably be the restaurant they'd choose.
You forgot to mention the perils of going "the hard way" upon entering.
