FRESH Sashimi in East Bay?

I still can't understand the fascination with Sushi Sho - we went several years ago when they did have table service - however the chef/owner and the waitresses did not have any concept of service. It took them so long to serve us, we almost walked out.
Recently, on a Saturday, we decided to give it another try - got there at 6:15pm, opening time was 6:00pm and there were a few couples waiting to get in. We waited another 10 minutes, left and ended up at Mitama on College Avenue. Great sushi, sashimi, salads and service and all was right with the world!

Disappointing Dim Sum at Fook Yuen in Millbrae

Fook Yuen lost their #1 chef about 7 months ago and they still have not recovered. We used to go there just for their fried spring rolls.

we were regulars at Vi's in Oakland till he decided to close the restaurant and move back to vietnam part time. Just thought there might be a good one closer to home.

ISO good Pho in Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito

Looking for a good Pho restaurant outside of the Ranch 99 complex - don't exactly enjoy the hap-hazard parking lot and crowd.

2nd Best Restuarant in Berkeley?

We go primarily for the meat dishes ... lunch - great hamburger and shoestring potatoes, dinner - steak or lamb again, with shoe string pots -- notice a trend there?
Their desserts are pretty good as well.

need a chinese banquet restaurant in the city (kirin or mayflower?)

Just went to a lovely banquet (40 guests) at R&G this weekend - food was excellent and everything came out hot - Wintermelon soup with 8 treasures was the standout! And they have a room large enough for 16 people - one huge round table.

My very brief jaunt to SF/Berkeley area (a little long, a little travel tippy, and some questions)

I know, I know, I know..we like to waste gas.. no, really, we're just used to the one down there and it's on the way home.

The best thing on the Gregoire menu is the chicken wings. We get 2 orders to go and then hop on down to Barney's on Solano for their chinese chicken salad - it makes for an easy take-out dinner for two

ICI, at last ... ICI, at last ... Sunday, ICI, at last

Tried to go today but alas... they were closed (!) so we drove over to Carvel's for our labor day ice cream fix.
We went to Sketch yesterday - bought 2 lbs of coffee ice cream and 2 lbs of peach with 2 almond lace cookies and 2 honey lavender shortbread - total cost $40 - loved the owners and will probably go again despite the cost. The coffee ice cream was just okay but the peach was out of this world.

Thai Restaurant Next Door - Zapp Zapp Noodle House (Albany)

We went for the first time this Sunday for lunch... drove around the block once but couldn't see the name Zapp Zapp so we decided to park and then realized the message board with the name was on the sidewalk. The sign over the restaurant still bears the name of the former chinese restaurant.
Decided to try it even though we were the only patrons - there was one other table which turned out to be friends of the owners.
There were six of us so we decided to order two appetizers and two salads - Deep fried beef jerky, fried chicken wings; green papaya salad and the seafood salad.
The beef jerky was excellent - deep fried but still maintained a bit of juice and came with a sesame sauce with chili flakes.
The Chicken wings were also moist and smothered with fried basil which was exceptional - not greasy and had a pleasant sweetness.
The papaya salad and the seafood salad were both really good - the seafood consisted of a couple of prawns (could have used more) and lots of fresh squid. the papaya salad had a really delicious dressing and was really refreshing.
We each ordered a bowl of noodles but with the appetizers we could have just ordered 3 bowls and shared.
We found the noodles very fresh - we had rice and egg noodles and flat rice noodles. The broth was clear and not greasy however, we thought the broth could have used some spicing up - it tasted a bit bland and sweet.
All in all I think it was good but again with the flavors of the appetizers and salads being so intense, they could have done the same with the noodle dishes.

need restaurant recs in Madrid - mid november

Butterfly... thanks for the tips.
We're pseudo "foodies" from San Francisco - so we'd be interested in "good" eating - nothing "chain" or "touristy". Love seafood but not real familiar with classic Madrid food, we have a couple of tapas places here but I'm sure it doesn't compare. We're staying at De Las Letras and I suppose we can always ask the concierge to make a couple of reservations.
Do you suggest getting one for O'Pazo or La Terazza del Casino?

Need Recs for S&P Crab Comparable to R&G

Try Chu Kong on El Camino in San Bruno. Their salt & pepper crab is close to R&G ditto s&p pork. They also have a spicy black bean sauce crab that is out of this world.

Albany heads-up - Zapp Zapp Noodle House ... Thai sausage, beef jerky ... Issan influence?

Thanks for the post...
Always on the look out for a good bowl of soup noodles. Clay Pot down the street (next to the Mech Bank)had Shanghainese noodles with spicy preserved vegetables which was excellent... they've changed owners (?) recently and nothing there tastes the same.

Oakland Area Dinner for 12 (5 kids under 10) this Sunday night

Garibaldi's on College Avenue (Oakland) - great shoe string potatoes, fried calamari, steak and roast chicken and good desserts.... there's a semi private room in the back.
Oliveto, also on College - good italian - fresh homemade pasta.

Chez Panisse or Gary Danko---if you had one night, which would you choose?

I guess we got lucky when hubby called on 14Aug and got a reservation for the 31Aug - perhaps I should run and buy a lotto ticket!

Chez Panisse or Gary Danko---if you had one night, which would you choose?

menus are usually posted at the end of the week - Sundays on the website and not 2 weeks prior. Reservations are taken 3 weeks ahead (we're going again with out of town guests this Thursday and the reservation was made a couple of weeks ago for a 6:30 seating) unless you want the weekend which is a little tougher to get into and all it is is one extra course - an apperitif.

I don't care for lamb and the last time we went they substituted with roasted chicken done to perfection.
Both restaurants are excellent but for the money and the dining experience, I still think Chez Panisse is better. Now, if you want to add the French Laundry into the mix - my vote is for the FL any day!

Chez Panisse or Gary Danko---if you had one night, which would you choose?

we have been going to Chez Panisse at least 2 or3 times a year (more upstairs in the cafe) since the early 80's and I have never had a bad meal - except the one time they had a special dinner and the dessert was some frozen anise (not my fav) souffle. I can't understand how anyone can be underwhelmed and consider the restaurant pretentious! It is the most unassuming of all 5 star restaurants around the bay area.

Ici Opening?

Thank you for the clarification, Morton the Mousse, and let me just say that I am always on the look out for a good ice cream but really, to care so much about an ice cream shop opening is something else - although the false adverts are a bit bothersome!
However, not to diminish your craving for a third "upscale ice cream shop" but how many cities in the U.S. can claim even one upscale ice cream shop? - NYC excluded of course.
Happy Hunting and I'm looking forward to your review if and when it ever opens. Cheers!
