Trip to Whitefish, Montana

There is a thriving food scene is Whitefish, MT. I didn't make it to Kalispell for a meal - just flew in there.

First, there is a great Mexican restaurant called Pescado Blanco. I had the tacos verdurdas and my friend had bison enchiladas. Both of dishes were very fresh and delicious. They serve a citrus habanero sauce tableside, for those interested. It was quite delicious.

Next find is Buffalo Care. A local favorite for breakfast especially. I had buckwheat pancakes and hashbrowns one day - both good. I also had a veggie burger and my friend had salmon. My burger was very good with handcut fries. The place was hopping. We had tried to go one time and left because of the wait. If you want to experience Whitefish, I would say this is truly the place to stop.

Next I went to Craggy Creek Grill. It's a local pub and restaurant. Again I had a veggie burger, which was prepared with Cajun seasonings - quite delicious. My friend had a turkey California club sandwich. We also tried their onion rings which were very good but seemed to be of the frozen variety.

I also tried out the Green Tea restaurant which is a local vegan/vegetarian spot. Great tea selection and good food. I stuck with salads so I really can't help with the other dishes. They looked great and wish I'd stopped in more often.

Next we tried Wrap and Roll. It's a divey spot that prepares stuffed burritos and such. It was fresh and delicious.

If we had stayed longer we were going to go to Loula's which looked very interesting with a cajun spin on their food. I'm already planning on going back next summer and hope to stay for two weeks. I hope to fill in the blanks then.

Enjoy, the town is packed with things to do and places to eat.

Trip to Whitefish, Montana

I am traveling to Whitefish in a week. I've been reading some of the other threads regarding Montana eats but didn't see much for this fair city. Can you tell me a little about the restaurant scene? Any grocery stores/farmer's markets I should stop by?

Also, any thoughts about Kalispell and other spots I should try in the general area. I'll be there for a week so plenty of time to chow while I traverse the trails.

Green's Vegitarian in San Antonio... okay for a business group?

A great spot to choose. Their food is delicious, versatile and they can easily handle 8 people.

vegetarians on texas road trip...

I second trying Vegeria in San Antonio. They have some of the best tamales that I've tried; If I'm not mistaken, they had over 20 varieties to choose from. Their daily species are eclectic and well worth trying. The owners are super nice guys and very accommodating. Vegeria was my primary destination when I visited this fair city and will be when I return.

I also tried Green Vegetarian restaurant and absolutely loved it. They have an extensive menu and they certainly have a good vibe. I had the "Mike" sandwich which was laced with habanero jelly. Quite delicious. The restaurant was packed out when I visited on a Friday afternoon. Delicious food and great service.

Good luck with the food adventures.

SA restaurants that use natural ingredients

Vegeria is fantastic. When I recently went to San Antonio they were my first stop. Great owners and great food. Local, organic and vegan. They make delicious tamales. I took a dozen home with me.

Sorrento in Kingwood?

I was able to tour the restaurant about two weeks ago, just days before opening. It's beautiful and much needed in Kingwood. I plan on going there for dinner soon. I'll try to report back.

My new favorite Thai restaurant in Houston

I couldn't agree with you more about Nara Thai. I discovered it a couple of years back. I'm a transplant from Montrose and lamented the lack of good restaurants in the Humble/Atascocita area. The food here is delicious. I normally get the Pad Kra Pow, Thai spicy. Yum. Also their Lemongrass soup aka Tom Yum is great. I got it Thai spicy once and I renamed it the Lava Soup. Extremely hot. By all means, I recommend this restaurant. As of yet, I've never had a bad meal there.

Thanks for focusing on it.

Field of Greens - Macrobiotic

Field of Greens is an excellent restaurant to take vegetarian and non-vegetarian friends. They do have a few non-vegetarian options so everyone should be happy.

Their menu is extensive and all of their mock meat dishes are tasty and good. I, personally, like the environment there. Artwork on the walls and a quiet spot to catch up with friends.

By the way, next door is a lovely tea shop for a cup post lunch/dinner. They also have an extensive list of teas that would satisfy anyone.

Lastly, Field of Greens is not a macrobiotic restaurant but they offer a macrobiotic plate, which I often get.

Enjoy!

Need a new Tex-Mex experience: what's your favorite in Houston?

My favorite Tex-Mex is at Spanish Village on Almeda. Old school Tex-Mex as the restaurant has been around since, I think, the 50's. Wonderful cheese enchiladas with gravy, excellent refried beans and rice. Their margaritas are known as some of the best in Houston. To top it off you get a complimentary praline with a fresh strawberry on top.

Artisanal Hot dogs in Houston

City Eats is a great little restaurant. Some of the best dogs and sandwiches I've ever had. The owners are super nice and accommodating. If you are looking for a taste of the NE, and specifically NJ, this is the place to go to. Downside is that it's a tiny restaurant with only two or three tables.

Also, years ago I lived in Western Massachusetts. The area had small hot dogs that were locally made. Two restaurants that come to mind are Theo's and the Hot Dog Ranch. Both were great. I wish we had those type of dogs here.

I must also add that Patek's in Moulton has great sausage and hot dogs. Try their Suicide Sausage - great coarse grind laced with hot peppers.

Nino's Italian Restaurant

I dined at Nino's about a month ago. It is a lovely, low key type of restaurant with excellent service. I was with a party of ten so many different dishes were enjoyed. I had the Antipasto Misto which had various cheeses, vegetables, and dried salami's. My main course was Salmone Peperanoto, which is a salmon dish with carmelized fennel and asparagus. It was quite delicious. Was too stuffed for dessert but they all looked wonderful.

Nino's is the type of restaurant I would have loved to linger at. Enjoy.

Houston and Hill Country Best Sausage

An interesting sausage is at Patek's in Moulton. It's called Suicide Sausage; coarse ground with slivers of hot peppers running through it. Delicious!

Elgins' Southside Market or Meyers For BBQ?

I personally like Southside Market. I believe it's one of my favorite barbeque stops in the state. On my last stop, their brisket was very tender with a lovely smoked flavor. Their sausage was very, very good too.

Restaurants/BBQ near Houston Galleria - advice needed

No one has mentioned the Hickory Pit in Bellaire. It is five minutes for the Galleria and has good barbeque. They have been around since the 1950's. I grew up in the area and they were the consistent barbeque go to place. My dad still goes every week. The original owners had deep Texas roots and hailed from the Moulton/Shiner area. It's not fancy and is definitely more of a dive. In my opinion, good basic barbeque.

Why do chains avoid Houston?

For good Chicago syle pizza try Windy City Pizza, 5377 Atascocita Road. It's a tiny establishment but ex-pat's believe it to be the real deal. Give it a try. Incidentally, across the street from Culvers!

Why do chains avoid Houston?

There is a Culver's on Atascocita Road at Timber Forest. Good burgers and frozen custard! Definitely worth the drive. It takes about 25 minutes from downtown to get there.

This little area is getting quite dense with some good chain types. Smashburger arrived about six months ago and now Five Guys is opening up across the road (FM 1960). Good news for locals.

Soft drink or hot sauce store in Houston?

Dave's Pepper Palace in Old Town Spring has a great variety of hot sauces. You can taste test most of their products to see if it's to your liking. The owners are very friendly and willing to order sauces that they do not carry. Definitely worth the trip.

Kingwood (burb just north of Houston)

I love City Eats. I think of it as a hot dog place but they have quite a few sandwiches and italian ices. I think they are the only spot around here that serves Sabrett hot dogs and dressings. I agree, the owners are very nice, hard working guys.

For pie try Judy Coons in Huffman. She makes homemade pies every day. Their buttermilk is one of the best I've had. The shop is only open M-F from 11:00-2:00 so you will have to go at lunch. It is well worth it.

Lastly, try Two Gems ice cream, next to Raffa's, where they serve Trentino gelato.

Kingwood really has quite a few good spots for dining.

Corned Beef Hash in Houston

Are there are any restaurants in the Houston area that offer diner style corned beef hash? I grew to love this dish when I lived in Massachusetts.

returning to Houston after 20 years

For puffy taco's: Los Tios serves up delicious ones.

Spanish Village, on Almeda, has some of the best Tex-Mex in Houston. Spanish Village is an institution unto itself having been here since the 1950's (or 40's?). They have great cheese enchiladas.

I agree with the recommendations of El Tiempo. Everything I've had there has been excellent.

Restaurants in Humble, TX

Yes, there is wonderful Thai in the Humble/Atascocita area. Go to Nara Thai at 18845 West Lake Houston, just south of FM 1960 E. It is delicious and the atmosphere is great. Beautiful art work, music and quiet environment to enjoy a meal. The owners are very nice and accomodating. Everything I have sampled there is good. Enjoy.

Clear Lake / Houston Italian Sausage?

This is not in the Clear Lake area but it is the best homemade Italian sausage I have found in the greater Houston area. Try Veron's in Atascocita - on FM 1960 E, just before Lake Houston. It's a little mom and pop meat market. They make the italian sausage in house and it is delicious. They are originally from Louisiana so there's a cajun flair to many of their offerings.
