Trini Roti Shop (Croydon/London)

We went here a few weeks ago when out shopping in Croydon, glad we did!

Ive never had a non Indian roti before so didnt know what to expect but these were amazing! They were especially nice with the tamarind chutney.

We also got the spinich side and also the pumpkin side to go with some dumplings. I loved the lot & would certainly go back just for the spinich alone.

For a drink we tried their home made drinks, cant remember what they were but they were both delicious.

We will certainly be going back, luckily its not too far from us :-)

Manadalay Cafe, Edgware Rd, London

I am glad more people are fining out about this place! I have been going here for about 3 years & have not ever had a bad meal. The owner is really nice & is always on hand if you need some suggestions on what to eat. They also have a load of interesting Burmese books in there which keep my parents busy for ages ;-)

Burritos at Salad Factory and the newly opened Chipotle [London]

I love US Chipotle Burittos so cannot wait to try these. Also, my husband has never had a Chipotle buritto so it will be fun introduce him to them :-)

Needs recs for 4 nights in London near Vauxhall

Hot Stuff In Vauxhall is very good if you are looking for some really good spicy food. We went here without booking (do book in advance!) and they didnt have enough room so they talked to the land lady of the pub next door & we sat in there & they brought the food to us!

This place is also very good in Vauxhall, its Eritrean and you eat all the food with this lovely flat bread. Id order the special platter, it will feed two people till busting, plus you get a glass of house wine free too

Both of these places are good & very cheap for London. Also, look through Time Out Cheap eats London online as this is my bible to find good & cheap places to eat in the city.

Do not go to Brick lane other than to have a wander along, the food is very much not a good example of Indian cooking and is a total tourist trap & not worth eating there. If you do want to visit, go during the day on a Sunday as they have a great market there with lots of yummy food stalls!

London - Good & cheap Sri Lankan?

The Masla Dosa wasnt as spiced as normal, not hot. just not as spiced. Ive never had a chilli hot masala dosa.

Im pretty good with hot food now after my trip to Kerala last summer, most of it was hot but not as hot as some Sri Lankan food ive had. I didnt choose particularly hot dishes though, mine were all 1 chilli on the menu.

London - Good & cheap Sri Lankan?

So we visited Apollo Banana Leaf Restaurant on Saturday & we really enjoyed our experience.

We ordered some chickpea doughnuts soaked in yogurt which were pretty yummy s i wasnt sure what to expect. The masala dosa followed which was delicious, shame the potoato filling wasnt slightly more spicy.

For our mains we ordered a mutton string hopper fry (instead of our usual kothu roti), unfortunately i havent had this before so cannot compare to others. It was very good though & wasnt greasy. We also ordered a mutton curry which was cooked with yogurt, the mutton was a little tough but the flavor of the sauce was good.

As sides we orderd a spinach side dish & a paratha to share (if we go again we'd get one each as they were tiny!). The spinach was lovely, nicely spiced with a creamy consistancy.

We'll certainly be back!

London - Good & cheap Sri Lankan?

Thanks for the replies, i'll certainly give them a try.

Im going to give Appollo Banana Leaf Canteen a go in Tooting this weekend as it has very good reviews on Time Out. I'll report back.....

London - Good & cheap Sri Lankan?

I've developed a taste for Sri Lankan food recently and am looking for good, cheap places in London to try out.

I live near to Morden but am willing to travel. There are a huge amount in Tooting but id like personal reccomendations if possibe to avoid the duds.

Thanks!

Sarah

Mooli's [London]

Oooohhh, i had heard talk of a goat Mooli being introduced but wasnt sure when...... I'll certainly be paying them a visit on Saturday now!

Mum's House - Oriental Super Market - Burmese Products and Takeaway Burmese Food - Turnpike Lane, London

Not sure if you already know but there is a Burmese place called Mandalay on Edgware Road which is very good. Booking is a must though as its tiny and very popular.

Opening soon in Soho, London

Yes, i agree. It certainly is better than the Kati Roll Company. Even if just for the service, but the food is better too!

Im taking my parents on Saturday for lunch :-)

Opening soon in Soho, London

We visited Moolis yesterday & were very pleased with the discovery.

Between my husband & me we had 4 mini Moolis, 2 x Keralan beef, 1 x Goan pork & 1 x Chicken.

First of all, the food is all very fresh & the staff are lovely! They are really interested in feedback too which is always a good sign.

I enjoyed both the beef & pork mooli & i cannot decide which i like more. The thing that stuck ut on the pork was the pommegranite seeds which add a lovely crunch to the wrap. The beef was so tender it melted in my mouth and the coconut salsa added a lovely creamy taste to it.

The drinks here are also very good. I had a mango lassi and my husband had a lemonade with mint. Im a huge fan of lassis & i judged places we ate in India by their lassi. This one was very good, not to thin & not too thick & really tasty. My husbands lemon and mint drink was also very good, not too sweet with a slight amount of salt added.

The only thing that saddened me was that they had run out of the cardamon puddings :-(

I enjoyed my food so much im going back to take my parents this weekend! lets hope they have some puddings left!

Fresh Turmeric - London

I found candlenuts in China Town, took me a while to find them though!

Trip Report (Was London Geography and Addresses)

Amazing report, thanks for taking the time to post this. I have really enjoyed reading it & have added a few restaurants to my growing list of places to visit!

Best West Indian/Trinidadian roti? [London]

The best place we've been to in North London is The Hummingbird (nearest Tube Finsbury Park), they do a great goat curry!

Malabar Junction?

If i wanted Keralan food id always go to the place Jforbes reccomended, ive been here 3 times & have enjoyed it every time. Not exactly central but if you like Keralan food (i miss it from our recent holiday!) its worth the travelling time

Pho at Ha Long Bay - Vietnamese in Wood Green, London - Report

I had a noodle dish of sorts, couldnt manage the pho due to going out after & didnt want my stomach swimming with liquid ;-)

My friend had a chicken curry which was more like a thick veg soup, another friend had some noodle dish which tasted ok but again wasnt Vietnamese.

The only reasonable dish was a friends prawn dish, think it was grilled prawns with garlic.

The places on Kingsland road are far better for Vietnamese food in my opinion. It would be ok for the Chinese food if i lived locally but i wouldnt go out of my way to eat there.

Pho at Ha Long Bay - Vietnamese in Wood Green, London - Report

Went there a few weeks ago & was pretty disapointed....... They have more Chinese dishes on the menu than Vietnamese.

The good thing was the food came quickly, no one was very impressed with their meal though.

Apparently its changed hands a few months ago & isnt as good as it used to be.

I doubt i would visit again unless in needed some food very quickly.

BYO in Britain??

Some yes, others no. Its usually best to check before as some will not let you drink in there.full stop.

Any places in particular?

What to eat at Thattukada

So i went again with some work friends a couple of weeks ago. I dont think they knew what to make of it. Idid warn them that there wouldnt be the "normal" Indian menu that we all get in our local curry house!

We asked what the specials were & they only had one, chilli beef. I was hoping there would be something with crab in it.

Between us we had a speacial of chilli beef, devilled chicken, butter chicken (for the person who didnt like spicy food, it was still too hot for her!), egg curry, meat biryani & a fish molley.

Everything apart from the molly was very good. The molly wasnt as good as our last visit which was a bit of a let down. It didnt have any sultanas or nuts in the sauce.

The chilli beef was enjoyed so much, another was ordered!

We are going again tonight with my parents. My dad had a stroke last year (fully recovered!) but he has to be careful with what he eats. He's not allowed large amounts of fats, especially saturated. So its going to be interesting to find something that he can eat which isnt too bad for him!

Fresh Kaffir Lime Leaves in London?

I found frozen ones in my local Waitrose, give them a go!

Food in Camden Town

Sorry, i cant help you with the restaurant choices, although there is a good pizza place on the left if you're heading towards Mornington Crescent (after McDonalds).

If you want great cocktails before dinner, go to 55 bar, they have a buy one get one free offer from 6pm - 8pm.

What to eat at Thattukada

Well, i had a lovely time at Thattukada! The food was great, thanks for the reccomendations JFores, they were all delicious.

The favourite was the fish Molley & appam. That is my kind of curry, lots of lovely flavours & a nice thick sauce!

We will certainly be going again, its just a shame its such a treck for us. We live in Surrey, about 10 mins from Morden so its a long tube ride!

What to eat at Thattukada

I've just found this place on google by accident, i was looking as to what dish you had reccomended was

http://www.keralapalace.co.uk/index.php

The website looks very similar and also its in East Ham, do you think its run by the same people?

What to eat at Thattukada

Great, thanks!

I'll give this a go & report back.

What to eat at Thattukada

Thanks! Do you think we need to book a table on Saturday night? It will only be for 2 or 3 of us.

Im off to Kerala in Sept so trying to get a taste of the food before we go.

What to eat at Thattukada

I know a few of you have been to this restaurant before so im asking for suggestions. One thing to note is we do not like really spicy food, some to add to the flavour is fine but not so much it drowns out any other taste.

Thanks in advance!

Sarah

UK's hippest cocktail bars

I love bar 55 in Camden. They do a great selection of cocktails & always have new specials on their board to try. The best thing is that between 6 - 8pm its buy one get one free, and all night on Sunday.

I love the place!

Good burgers in London.

This place winds hands down for me, they do a great burger & cheesy chips but the malted milkshakes are to die for! Its also really nicely themed as a 1950's American diner
