Lunch near Bloor and the West Mall

Thanks Cynalan! I'd forgotten about Via Allegro. As it turned out, my client said she'd choose a place - so I'm off the hook for now. I'm not expecting anything great, but I'll report back if there are any good surprises in that area.

Lunch near Bloor and the West Mall

I need to take a client to lunch next week near Bloor and the West Mall. I am looking for a spot that would offer good food, a relatively quiet spot to talk and a fairly quick turnaround (we probably have about an hour and a half). My client is very into healthy eating and a clean diet - the restaurant doesn't need to be Rawlicious, but healthy options are a must. Any suggestions?

Dried Chow Mein Noodles

Success! Although funnily enough, after checking out the produce section I found them in the Asian food isle. I went to a bigger No Frills this time (Dufferin Mall) and they had tons of them. Thanks for your suggestions.

Dried Chow Mein Noodles

Thanks Midknight and Warlock! Now that you mention it, I can picture seeing those noodles in the produce section. I was looking in the Asian food aisle. I'll check it out and report back.

Dried Chow Mein Noodles

I'm trying to recreate a Christmas cookie from the 80's that was made with dried chow mein noodles. I know I've seen these around but now that I'm looking, I can't find any. Specifically I'm looking for those dried chow mein noodles (kinda wide) that come in a styrofoam container that is covered in plastic wrap. So far I've checked out Loblaws, No Frills, Metro and a couple of Asian supermarkets. Any ideas? (west end preferred!)

Breakfast at King and John

I have to admit that I didn't go and have a good look at the pastries. I did, however, see many people order the croissants in the 3 hours (!) that I was there. I did not see any macarons though (they may have had them, but I didn't see any from where I was seated). I should have mentioned earlier that the room was very charming - pretty room with a large bay window, upholstered chairs and white linens. Our server was very French. My friend and I both remarked that it felt like a café you'd find in Quebec City.

Breakfast at King and John

My friend and I opted to have breakfast this morning at Le Neuf Café. It was delightful. I feel very grateful for the recommendation, as I don't think I ever would have discovered Le Neuf on my own. I'm sorry to admit that my friend and I both chose to have the bacon and eggs - so I don't have too much to report! The eggs were poached to perfection and the bacon was crisp but not charred. The accompanying salad was nice, as was the fresh slice of baguette. I also had a latte which was perfect. I really noticed that everything was piping hot - which made for an even more delicious breakfast that tasted like it was made especially for us (just as it should).

HELP! I can't find any Advent Calendars

I'm in the west end so I don't know about Scarborough, but I saw lots of Lindt advent calendars on sale at Shopper's Drug Mart today. I think they were $7.99. I payed $10 two weeks ago.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I haven't been to any of these places and they all sound interesting in their own way. I'm leaning towards the Ritz Carlton or Le Neuf Café but I'm going to let my friend make the final decision. Thanks so much!

Breakfast at King and John

A friend and I are attending the Sounds of the Season show at the CBC building before the crack of dawn on Friday. We'd like to have a delicious breakfast afterwards, preferably walking distance from the CBC. Any suggestions?

The Costco Thread - new products, old favourites, interesting items

I bought the large jar of strawberry Bonne Maman jam at the Etobicoke store a couple of weeks ago. If I'm remembering correctly I think it was $5.99.

Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie Mix

Thanks for the info! I will assume the brownie mix will return to Costco in time. I couldn't get the manufacturer store locator to work - seems to be set up for the US.

Ghirardelli Triple Chocolate Brownie Mix

I've been buying this brownie mix at the Etobicoke Costco for several years. I went to replenish my stash this week and I couldn't find it anywhere. Finally I asked and it has apparently been discontinued at that store. Does anyone know if it's still available elsewhere? Thanks!

ISO Cupcake Ring Toppers

McCall's baking supply store has them - though if memory serves me correctly their selection is usually seasonal (ie. pumpkins in October, hearts in February, etc.). They are located at Kipling and Bloor.

Trip report: Prince Edward County (very long)

Hey Toronto Jo - Just wanted to thank you for this excellent review of your trip to PEC. Spent 3 days there last week and we based most of our itinerary on your recommendations (including the doughnut shop which we visited twice). Two lovely dinners, one at Blumen Garden Bistro and one at East and Main. Two lovely lunches, one at Tall Poppies and one at County Cider Co. And lots of stops for cheese, veggies, baked goods and coffee.

Great Avocados at Costco

Peppermint Pate, I was wondering the same thing about the avocados. I've been buying them since May and so far they've been there every time. Since I'm not a Costco shopper, I often go solely for avocados. It still seems odd to me to buy produce at the same place I could buy a TV, but for perfect avocados, I'll do it.

Great Avocados at Costco

I love avocados and buy them regularly. I always try to have ripe ones on hand. Despite my best efforts, I often find that my avocados are not of great quality. They often feel perfect but upon opening are black and mushy in places. I am not a Costco shopper in general and use my membership for photo finishing purposes mostly. I have, however, discovered that Costco avocados are amazing! For just over $6 you get six avocados and in the 4 months or so of buying them I have yet to find one that wasn't perfect. This may be old news, but it's been revolutionary to me. We've been enjoying the best ever guac all summer.

Best Bread in Toronto

I am in search of really good bread. Ideally it would be made in-house. I live in the west end so that would be easiest, but I will travel for that perfect loaf.

Baked Explorations Caramel Apple Cake

I made this yesterday and it was excellent! A keeper for sure. The apple flavouring of the cake is fantastic. I made a few changes. I did not make homemade applesauce. I did however buy some very expensive, organic applesauce. Don't know if that made a difference, but wanted to get "good stuff" since I wasn't making my own. I made a regular vanilla frosting, not the one listed in the recipe. Instead of covering the top in caramel (I was worried about a 'cutting the cake' disaster), I put the caramel in a pretty bowl and spooned a pretty pattern of caramel on each piece of cake and its plate. Given the enormous size of this cake, I'm very happy I did this. We have about 3/4 leftover and I think all that caramel dripping down the sides wouldn't have worked out so well. As it stands I have a fabulous part-cake that I'm going to bring with us to our next Thanksgiving dinner! All in all, a really great cake.

Maraschino Cherries with Stems

Thanks so much Urban! I was at W-S yesterday and sure enough they had them. And yes - pricey! $14 for a small jar. Likely a one-time purchase - but just what I need for this one occasion.

Maraschino Cherries with Stems

I know maraschino cherries are quite awful but I need some with stems for a visual effect. Anyone know where I can buy these in Toronto? I live in the West end but will travel to get them.
Thanks!

local strawberry sightings & pricings, 2011

Bought some organic Ontario strawberries last week at Sweet Potato in the west end (Dundas and Pacific). The berries were fabulous. Cost was $4.50/pint.

Apple Fritter Search!

Since discovering the apple fritters at SanRemo bakery (thanks to this thread!), I have been frequently enjoying these gems whenever I'm in the area. I was back again this week and was disappointed. The apple fritters I bought on Monday were half the size of what they used to be. I don't care too much about how big they are, but these were round, somewhat hard and lacking in apples. Also, the small, round shape led to less glaze in the nooks and cranies. Anyone else notice a disappointing difference in these once fabulous fritters?
